You could start by NOT crossposting to loads of irrelevant newsgroups.

Then you could try 'modprobe sg'

Then you could recompile the module for the kernel that you're using.

Subject: Please Help W/My Various Problems (lost passwd, x, "LI", and just a couple

Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 08:56:03 GMT

Greetings,

First, the specs and the details: PIII 600, 128MB RAM, 20GB HD, TNT2 64
(32MB), Sblaster Live! Value, Aztech v.90 modem....Trying to install Linux
(redhat 6.2) on my buddy's system (on the same HD which has win98 - yes, I
have fdisk'd so that Linux has it's own partitions), here are the problems,
please help me.

1. Once the installation process is over and it reboots, instead of the
reassuring LILO prompt, I only got "LI". How can I resolve this? Does the
HD have to be set as "normal", "LBA" or something else in BIOS?

2. When I tried to configure X, when it came to testing out the X
configuration, once the screen goes blank to test, I'd get this floating
bubble saying, "sync out of range". I tried to change the v&h sync ranges
to various numbers, but I'd still get the same result. The monitor's from
Dell.

3a. How can I get into my own box for which I lost the password to root and
the users I created (yeah, they both were same)? Someone told me to boot
into it in single mode, but I don't know how to do that and also, once in
single mode, I understand I'd have to mount the partitions correctly so
that I can write to the files which need to be changed. Can someone please
kindly instruct me how?

4. For those Redhat 6.2 users, once the installation process was and it was
rebooting, it dawned on me that it never asked me or I missed the part
about where LILO should be installed. If I did indeed miss it, where in
the installation process should I be expecting it?

5. How can I get sound to work with SBLive! Value?

TIA! Please help!

Regards,
RipRock

HI,

This is a bit all over the place ...

I have a Linux box acting as an NFS server, it contains all the users home
directories.

I have a number of Sparcs, that NFS mount the user home directories from
the Linux box.

Now comes the complication. I have one particular sparc acting as a NIS
master (I wanted to have the Linux box doing this, but time and problems
prevented me).

When I login to the client sparcs, and I'm in my home directory, an 'ls
-l' reveals that I own the files and I'm in the correct group. Now, if I
try to create a file, ie 'touch newfile', I get

# touch newfile
touch: cannot change times on newfile

The file does get created but with 'nobody4' user and 'nogroup' group
attributes!

The UID's from the NIS master and the Linux box match! Is it a time thing?
Do I need to sync the time on the machines? Why don;t files get created
with the correct UID and GID???

Any help here???

cheers
E

In that case I would prefer to copy /dev/null to the entire disk

  like in dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/hda

That would destroy the contents of the entire disk and the new owner
would then start from a clean slate.

On previous versions you could just run "make menuconfig" and you would
start off with the redhat configuration as the default configuration.
On those versions there were only that one and same kernel configuration.

Another thing that might be nice to know, is that standard redhat kernels
are built as bzimage, so your kernel might turn up too big if you build
the zimage instead.

I'm in the same situation, and agree that it would be very nice to have a
version of linux that supported this chip set.

At the moment I'm using red hat version 6.0, and have recently discovered that
this version of lunix uses XFree 3.3.3, and that I need to XFree 3.3.5 to
support the drivers etc. for the 810 chip set. So I suppose a good start would
be to have a version of linux that came with XFree 3.3.5 or above.

Just in case you don't know about it here is the intel page for the 810 chip
set...

Hi
you can do this by
    1) pressing CTRL-ALT-PLUS or CTRL-ALT-MIN
if you have more resolutions setup (not allways the case)
    2) Running Xconfigurator
log in as root or su

    3) Editing the file XF86Config
log in as root or su

        go to section screen
change the line modes "****x**** " into the resolution you want.

Ron,

Without posting info to evaluate, it's difficult to know what is
happeining.

Now, all of this is presumably to connect to the internet via the
ethernet interface instead of the ppp interface, right?

Referencing the icon on the desktop, this is not an icon to launch a
dialer for ppp is it?

I'm assuming that you want to use the network card in order to interface
to a cable modem or an xDSL based service, or perhaps a direct network
link? I would suggest deleting any references to networking in linux,
or better yet, deleting the linux install, and starting over. This will
ensure that parts of config files which you've accessed in your quest to
get this running will not be left lingering about, ready to trip you
up.

But before reinstalling, run winipcfg in a dos window in windows, first
before connecting to the internet, and then again WHILE CONNECTED to the
internet, to be able to see what interfaces are involved, and all of the
information like default gateways, ip addresses, etc. Write this stuff
down, so that when you're reinstalling the linux and setting up the
networking, you will be armed with the data you need to successfully set
it up. Run route. Run netstat.

Then reinstall the linux. Set up your network card in the manner you
saw in winipcfg. Then, try pinging the loopback adapter, or
localhost. Ping your nameserver's ips. ping your gateway. This will
tell you if the network card is recognized and if the host file has an
entry for itself. While you are in linux, there are network utilities
which can assist you. Use netstat and route and ifconfig from a
command prompt or shell. These will give you the same kind of data
that winipcfg did in windows.

Good Luck,
Valentin Guillen

Impossible. You can only do ISDN calls to a passive ISDN card in Linux.
There is no support at all for analog connections on an ISDN line.
All the ttyI* devices are good for is to setup and configure the
ISDN device via the usual AT command sequences. They do not allow
for non-ISDN sessions for various reasons; mainly timing problems
with the analog->digital signal conversion.

It _might_ be possible programming such a thing for active ISDN cards,
just the way they are doing it for the fax support, but I'm not
aware of any current implementation at this time (though this isn't
much of a topic for me due to the lack of an approriate card,
admittedly).

/dev/hda11 /home is 21MB

and I still don't think that this will be enough space for the new

this setup I have 882 MB free space on my /usr partition. Will fdisk
allow me to repartion this or should i check out disk druid or

No, you need not to change anything in the bios, you need a /boot
partition the bios can reach, ie. either make one on HDD (thus below
cyl. 1024) or use a floppy to boot from. After you've linux booted, you
can upgrade lilo to a newer version that can boot from beyond cyl 1024.
(If your bios supports it!)

It'll all be mounted just nicely. At the liloprompt enter `linux single`
and unless you have this protected with a passwd (default setup leaves
this unprotected) you'll be the root user.

Where it asks you if you want it to install in the MBR, if you want a
boot floppy (YES you want one!) IIRC it's right after you created the
partitions.

Make sure that you keep a small partition free for the /boot partition
of linux below cyl 1024, or you'll end up with some problems to solve
later on.
I'd advise you to make C: 6G and install win98 there. Then install
linux, and create a FAT partition of 4G too. windows will see this as D:
later on.
Starting windows is very easy in lilo, you'll be able during the linux
install to setup lilo for booting windows too (At least in RH you would,
I suppose Suse does this too) If it isn't done during install, you can
always afterwards set this up, it's very easy. Where you put lilo isn't
very important, I usually put in the MBR but if that scares you, you can
put in in the root partition just as well. Then you'll have to mark that
partition as the active one. Just give it a try, but make sure to start
with windows and then linux. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble.

If you just want to upgrade the kernel, ie untar it and compile it, you
could do so from /usr/<someplace_else> and then link to /usr/src/linux

ie,
tar zxvf linux-2.2.16.tgz /usr/tmp (for example)
cd /usr/src
ln -s /usr/tmp/linux linux

Also, if you've no problem backing up, then just repartition the drive,
your /usr/src and /home look kinda small too. Is this a home machine?

Subject: Please help me configure the Microsoft IntelliMouse in XF86Setup
Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 10:47:07 GMT

Could you help me chose the proper parameters? Just can't seem to get
the mouse working by myself.
Should the protocol be Microsoft, IntelliMouse of PS/2?
Is the Mouse Device /dev/psaux or another file?
Since the mouse has 2 buttons and a wheel, should I chose 3 buttons?
(there is no 2 button options).
Do I set Emulate3Buttons?
What should the baud rate be?
What should the resolution be?
What should the sample rate be?
What should the number under Emulate3Timeout be?
Thanks
