This is very thoughtful advice, thank you very much. How about getting rid
of LILO once the Windows partition is taken over by linux?

You could use linux fdisk to delete all partitions.
Then dos fdisk /mbr to erase lilo.
Then dos fdisk to start over.

I use SuSE....and the KDE environment...it has a neat mailer called K-Mail that
can handle as many pops as you like.

Do you still have the boot floppy created during the instatllation of
RedHat 6.2? I found that is the easiest to modify.

Make a copy of the linux boot floppy.
Under DOS
diskcopy a: a:
Under Linux
(use mkbootdisk and dd)

Mount your newly created linux boot floppy and make sure it is write
protect switch is off
$ su -
password: <secret>
# mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
# cd /mnt/floppy/etc
#  vi lilo.conf

boot=/dev/fd0
timeout=100
# note: this message is in /boot on the harddisk
message=/boot/message
prompt
# note: this image is in /boot on the harddisk
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda4
        append="hdc=ide-scsi"
        read-only

# /sbin/lilo -C /mnt/floppy/etc/lilo.conf

I would agree, and add that user to user support is much faster than
vendor support. Also, some vendor support has very fine print as to what
is actually covered. I know RH used to be only installation support.
Once installed, they are off the hook. I believe they have different
plans now, so this may be different.

Boot linux and run "lilo -u" then use the linux "fdisk" and delete all
linux partitions. Reboot with a windoz bootdisk then format the drive.

Michael,

Your best bet at this point might be to make the hard drive like it was
when it left the factory, and start COMPLETELY over again. Your hard
drive requires to edit some hidden sectors on the hard drive which
contain the partition info and to completely remove all prior existing
partition information.

The only practical way I know to do this is: I would boot the computer
with a dos or windows floppy boot diskette. Now this boot diskette must
also have the DOS debug.exe file on it. I would then run debug, and
then run the script appended below. The script is a very small (about 8
or 10 lines), and when you run the script, it will clear out the
partition table which is hidden on the drive, and your hard drive will
then be like new. Here's the script:

http://www.firmware.com/support/bios/hdclear.htm

DEBUG Script to Clear Partition Sector of Hard Drive

Summary: This DEBUG script is used to erase a hard drive when other
          methods are not sufficient.

Even if you have repartitioned the hard drive, FDISK does not update the
entire partition sector after the first time. The
following DEBUG script will clear the partition sector (cyl 0, head 0,
sector 1) of the first hard drive, which will force
FDISK to completely start over. This is sometimes useful for removing
Disk Manager or EZ Drive and should also remove any
boot sector viruses, providing that the virus is not active in memory,
which should be the case if you have booted clean from
a non-infected diskette. Although this script clears only the first
physical drive, we recommend unplugging other drives to
prevent accidental data loss. Letters in script are not case-sensitive.

      A:\>DEBUG
      - f 200 L200 0
      - a 100
      xxxx:0100 mov ax,301 (ignore segment:offset values at left)
      xxxx:0103  mov bx,200
      xxxx:0106  mov cx,1
      xxxx:0109  mov dx,0080
      xxxx:010C  int 13
      xxxx:010E  int 3
      xxxx:010F (Press ENTER an extra time here)
      - d 100 LF
      xxxx:0100 B8 01 03 BB 00 02 B9 01-00 BA 80 00 CD 13 CC
      (make sure that hex values match above line before proceeding)
      (if values do not match, type Q and start over)
      - g=100
                              (ignore register display)
      - q (quits back to DOS)

FDISK should now show "No partitions defined".

Now then, if the script is not really exactly clear, then you really
should read the footnotes at the website, or write back to me and I'll
explain it a bit further. Remember to remove the anti spam crap from my
email address when writing to me.

Regards,
Valentin Guillen

Are the three partitions using FAT16 or VFAT (Win9x)? You must
already have vfat support in the kernel since you can see the Primary
Master (Windows). Try mounting the FAT partitions manually. You must
have a mount point first (mkdir /mnt/hdb1, 2, etc.)

then try:

mount -t msdos /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1

or

mount -t vfat /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1

etc.

If you can mount the partitions, you can add lines to /etc/fstab to
mount them automatically when you boot. Just copy the line that mounts
your vfat partition on hda1 and make the necessary changes for hdb and
filesystem, if necessary.

If this does not work, you may not have msdos filesystem support in your
kernel or as a module, which will require recompiling.

I've got a fresh install of RH6.2, and I'm not having any luck with the
official installer of XFree86 4.0.1 for my TNT2.

I found the Rawhide dir full of recent (and probably 'at your own risk')
RPMs, but most of them require some dependent packages to get installed.
Chicken and Egg.

The sequence of problems read like a list from The Simirillion:
.. rpm4 dependency begat Glibc dependency begat libdb.so dependency ....
on an on, almost all packages need some baseline newer than the one on my
RH6.2 CD. I don't know where to start. RPM doesn't help much with suggested
packages to upgrade first.

I'd like to try using the RPMS, since they're probably going to be geared
for RedHat's layout. I did OK with Apache and PHP4 tarballs, but X 4.0.1 is
on another level of complexity when the config script doesn't work.

How does one go about doing a massive rawhide upgrade of a fresh RH62
install? Is there a better use of RPM for this purpose than "-Uvh"?

Thanks.
