Is there a way to set a different umask for every group, in case the user
changes a group with newgrp ?
I thinking about simple writing a little sh program that does this, but can
it be done easier ??

What type of ethernet card? What distribution are you using? Have you recompiled
a kernel? If you can tell us a bit more about your system, the card that you got to
make it work, etc. That would be helpful.

I am trying to compile a tulip.c source file using a
'gcc' command suggested in the source file.
I am getting an error about missing 'autoconf.h',
which seems to be so. From my research I
might be able to get 'autoconf.h' by running
menuconfig. Before doing so I would like to
know what my current settings are so I don't kill
my linux setup. I was shielded from answering
those questions by the Mandrake installation.
I found some configuration files about my network
card, etc. I haven't found a file that seems to have
answers to those unfamiliar questions asked by
xconfig and menuconfig.
Where do I look?

Hello,
I had the same problem and asked the labtam support. Here's the
solution:
"Please, by using Xsettings utility,
check the "Block KeySyms Changing" check box.
If this check box is enabled,
it prevents the XServer keyboard's KeySyms mapping from external

Hope this helps,

If the ./configure went OK, there should be a file named Makefile in the source
directory--which is what make is looking for.
Check to see if the Makefile was created (not Makefile.in, as that is what is
used, in part, to create the Makefile). If there is no Makefile, the configure
apparently didn't go too well. You can try to read config.log and see where it
failed, or you can try to re-run ./configure (I'd recommend removing
config.cache first) and watch for any error messages.

The monitor is an Aamazing CM-8483E. The specs say Hsync 31.5,
Vsync 50-70. This is what I put in the monitor setup and have
successfully used in numerous other Linux setups using this
monitor. Resolutions available are 640x350, 640x480, and 720x400
so I set the monitor resolution to 640x480. I tried 16 bbp but I
got a
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
error. The 8 bpp seems to work better.
I tried changing the Hsync in the monitor to the 31.54 mentioned
in the error messages but then I get the
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
error again.
I tried adding another 32M of RAM to make a total of 64M
($102!!!). Still the same
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
error. I tried
free
in bash and Linux does see the 64M RAM ok. The 100 MB swap file
also appears here so is likely working.
Any probing done, like for clocks, was done automatically by
XF86Setup - I didn't request any that I know of.
That's all I can think of. Suggestions? Please? I've gotten no
response from Mandrake support - yet.

thanks for the info..im totally unfamiliar with SuSE linux. is storm or
definite linux the same way? funny thing, every piece of literature ive
ever seen made no mention of SuSE's choice of runlevel values being
different than others, or for that matter, any other distro using
different values. perhaps its a europe thing? i mean, we (the states)
still use the stupid english system of measurement (feet, inches, etc).
even the uk uses metric and they invented the old system!
i think most people start with rh or something similar so its a good
generic assumption for such info if no distro was listed.

IDE drives can have a maximum of 4 primary partitions. One of
those primary partitions can be an "extended partition" that contains
many logical partitions. These would typically be labeled hda1, hda2,
hda3 and the extended partition hda4 which could contain logical
partitions hda5, hda6, hda7, etc.
"fdisk" will allow you to change your partition table....red hat
also has Disk Druid that can do this. Disk Druid is less capable than
fdisk (but is more graphical for the alphanumerically-challenged).
Note, if you have data you want to keep, messing up your partition table
can remove your ability to access that data. Backup first. And write
down what your partition table is now (so you can recreate it if you
mess up bigtime).

Subject: Onstream DI-30 IDE tape drive
Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2000 15:40:48 GMT
Hi,
I'm desperately looking for someone who got his Onstream DI-30 IDE
tape drive to work with any of the latest SuSE (6.3 or 6.4)
distributions.
Support for this (supposedly) nice piece of hardware is included in
the SuSE kernel.
I thought that I got everything to work, but 'tarring' an archive to a
tape, I cannot read my written tapes. When I start the restore,
everything seems to work fine, but after extracting some files from a
tape, I always get a tar-error message: 'tar: read error on /dev/ht0:
Input/Output error'. After I get this message 10 times, I get the
error: 'Tar: too many errors, quitting', and everything stops.
Who experienced this before?
Please, HELP!

: Are you sure that you have the right port (/dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS1,
: etc....) specified in the your /etc/wvdial.conf file?
: Using trial and error, I was able to get it to work on my 486dx 50mHz.

I am using /dev/ttyS0 (with /dev/modem linked to ttyS0). It works well
with minicom and so I assume I have at least this part setup properly.
Thanks for your input.

Micheal Catudel's reply to my original posting :
: use yast to setup wvdial and then run it as root. After that you
: should be able to run it as a simple user. You'll have to edit /etc/wvdial.conf
: to remove the obnoxious line that tells it not to reconnect on line going off
: by no fault of yours.
This is what I am doing and I am not even able to get the modem to dial
the number. I have tried editing wvdial.conf and even stuck in the
init string that minicom was using to initialize the modem, but it still
didn't do the job.

It probably wants, at least, the I/O address and IRQ of the card. Since
it's a EISA system, you can find them out by using your motherboard's
EISA configuration utility (you do have it, right? - otherwise, you're
screwed). Or, the (autoprobed) options are probably in /etc/modules.conf
on the RH6 system, or wherever RH keeps its config files.
