I had a similar problem with Apache. The permissions were set O.K. on my machine, but
I was getting a forbidden. You might want to check the error_log file that should be
in your apache logs directory.
My log said something about SIGTERM that I had no idea about. I reinstalled using the
latest RPM (instead of compiling) and never had the problem again (even with a new
DocumentRoot).
Sorry I can't be more descriptive.

Hey all, I'm pretty new to Linux and I have a little problem that I
hope
has a simple solution....I was using my friend's computer, which has
Red
Hat on it (6.2 I think, but I'm not exactly sure.) I was in X
windows
as the root user, and decided to change from the default window
manager
(fwvm or something like that) to one of the others. When I did so, X
shut down and wouldn't start up again. I'm not exactly sure how to
fix
this problem, so it would be a great help if someone could tell me
how
to make it switch back to the working window manager, or any other
way
to fix this problem.

What is this world coming to when a single question can go to 6 different
user groups. Does that mean that there are FAR to many groups?
Or the question is poorly phrased. I will answer to ONE group..

** You need the LInux LOader to get linux into the system.
IF it is in the Master Boot Record (MBR) you can use it to multiboot.
IF you are using another multiboot loader such as bootmagic (which didn't
install on my home system some years ago!) then you need lilo in the boot
record of the linux partition.

Linuxconf is screwed up. If you only give a user name, it passes as a group name a ''
instead of 'username'
Use useradd instead. It defaults properly.

As it is, you are exposing the bootblock and the partition table to the
/tmp filesystem and that can get really messy.
If you want the entire disk, you should still have one primary partition
and that should be mounted at /tmp.

I am not sure why you want 3 dos partitions, but if it makes sense to you, I would make
them all primary. That way, your dos junk is hda1/2/3 and with your extended
partition,
all your linux stuff starts from hda5 and up. Just seems a bit more aesthetically
pleasing.
Next, I would place /boot as the first, lowest cylinder number partition. Again, this
is
just good housekeeping should you move to a larger disk and you want your dos
partitions to
be larger. (In fact, there is nothing wrong with having /boot as hda1, but that would
also
mess up the 'numbering' scheme.

Nova,
You don't say in your post what you're installing. Is it an
installation from a whole shrinkwrapped package, or images burnt onto
CD, cheapbyes cds, etc.
The reason I ask is because if you have the retail packages then you
definitely hav e the documentation. If you only have the cd disks, then
being how you're a dos/win/mac guru, you need to insert the CDs into a
working CDrom drive, and start reading the readme files which are
onthese cds. Alternately, you need to read the manuals which shipped
with the products.
The readme files included with the products explain the boot options,
the potential problems, the workarounds for those problems, alternate
procedures. These say what to do when this problem happens, or that
problem happens.
What ever happened to reading? Windows has ruined all of us, it seems.
No one can seem to read a readme file, or a how to. If bill hasn't
supplied us with animated icons, then we're all lost.

H Briggs,
there is NO windows program to open the *.rpm file you mention.
The SuSE User's and install guide is available on CD1 in the /docu
folder. it's in dos text form, and then all of the documentation you
could ever want/need is available at http://www.suse.de or
http://www.suse.com
I'm quite certain that the entire collection of documentation is also
available on one of the 6 cds in the distro, in html form ready to view
in your web browser. Additionally the entire collection of
documentation installs by default, (or did in previous versions) and so
is available after installation.

Try the following command:
startx -verbose &>/tmp/startx.log
This will create a log of errors startx encounters. Then, post the log here
so we can see it. You deserve lashing with a wet noodly for dinking with

Jane,
I am working on a similar project with a little bigger system
so I can experiment with Linux without wrecking the way I have it
set up on my "real" computer. I've checked out www.slackware.com
and under Install they say the minimum requirements are a 386 with
16 mb RAM, a 50 mb HD, and a 3.5 floppy drive.
Nonetheless, elsewhere on the site they have a bootdisk you can
download for use on systems with <8 mb RAM, so there must be some
way to get that running.
There is also a bootdisk for "old, old" drives, and you can even
download a few images for those old 5.x inch floppies if that
amuses you.
I also located two mini-HOWTOs at http://metalab.unc.edu that might
help: "small memory" and "saving space." They list things you can
delete without breaking your Linux.
Contact me off-list if you like and we can try to help each other.
My objective is to take the system apart repeatedly so I learn how
everything fits and works together.

1) don't work as root. You stuff up the system too easily...
2) we can't really help unless you tell us what you did.
What files did you change? What menu items did you use?
3) if something "doesn't work" then tell us how you know. What should
happen that doesn't? What happens instead? What errors? What does
/var/log/messages say?

They should both be preconfigured if you did a full install of COLeD2.4.
Just throw in your HOSTNAME for SMTP & POP servers and it should work.
You could look in /var/spool/mail/<username> for the contents of the
mail spool, which should aid in troubleshooting.

Your biggest limiting factor is going to be your RAM, followed by your
HD.
Linux likes to have at least 4MB of RAM. You can fit linux onto an 80MB
drive, but you'll be quite limited on what you can install, and X is
just about out of the question. I'd suggest looking into Slackware on
such anold system.

I have the card and have not been able to get it to work in ANY resolution.
My screen behaves like you descire (i. e. appearing as if to go into power
