OK stupid question. I have been using ctrl-z to exit man pages.
there is a better way correct?

Hi,

I messed with /etc/fstab and instead of /dev/sda1 I typed /dev/hda1. Now
at boot time the system is trying to mount /dev/hda1 that doesn't exist.
After typing the root password I am logged in a recovery mode where the
root filesystem is mounted as readonly and I cannot edit /etc/fstab. How
can I change the mode to rw?

Thanks in advance.

$ man mount

     remount
Attempt to remount an already-mounted file
system. This is commonly used to change the
mount flags for a file system, especially to
make a readonly file system writeable.

would be one way of trying it. If this filesystem is not
"critical" you could simply let the machine boot, fail the
mount and carry on into multiuser mode. Then as root, fix
fstab and mount the filesystem by hand.

Alternatively, boot the system from some recovery medium,
and mount the root fs somewhere like /mnt and edit fstab
that way.

to install Linux RedHat 6.2 but I could not configure the Display Card..
Somehow it does not detect the card.. can somebody who has encountered this
problem, teach me...

There's another machine in my office that I try to install Linux.. The
display card is 86C365.. I've installed Linux Mandrake 6.1.. I managed to
configure the card but I just get 16 colours only... I used S3 ViRGE
(generic) for the card and Generic Monitor for the monitor... If I use
Generic Multisync Monitor, 16 bit 1024x768 detected... but if I run
'STARTX -- -bpp 16", I just get blank screen...

can somebody help me...? :(

I haven't tried it, but freshmeat.net has Xchemdraw at this link:

You can also find tons of other software there.

The arguement of costs is not important at all.

At least for any real businesses.

You see. Business software is part of the business expenses, so, they're
tax deductable.

The money has got to go, either to the software companies, or to the tax
collectors.

So. Tell me where's the *real* saving!!!???

To have access to ATAPI zip 100 disk drive
==========================================
add to /etc/fstab
/dev/hdd /zip vfat noauto,rw,user,nosuid,sync 0 0
after
 mkdir /zip
 chmod 666 /zip

See www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/ZIP-Drive-5.html,
www.thehaus.net/Tips/Linux/zip.shtml

To make a desktop icon for the Zip drive, right click ->
New -> File System Device. The device is something like
/dev/hdd4. Name the kdelnk file zip.kdelnk and choose zip
drive icons (at the bottom of the icon graphics) for both
mounted and unmounted drive. The icon for mounted has a
little green square on the bottom right. Or mount
manually with mount /zip

this has to be one of the all time greatest signatures. well, at
least, seen since 1991. it's all there -- the computer quotes, the
jab at geek codes, the fun psuedo unix shell notations.

i have to especially point out the song spoof at the end. thanks for
the reminder. i'll be whistling along to my sound of music LP.

the only thing lacking, if you will permit the impertinence of my
suggestion, is a large ascii art. you seemt to be a man of refinment
and taste, therefore i heartily recommend the classic two-handed sword
motif.

wb2rxf de wa4ajy.. The books suggested by Dale are excellent. May I call
your attention to places, like,
perhaps, www.linuxnewbie.org. Also, there are literally many thousands of
linux pages on the web, the
majority of which are for newbies. On IRC, in #linux, if you encounter
attitudes, try another server. MOST people
playing with linux really, really, try to help others join the fun. We
have a few who don't, thankfully they are rare. Also, I pass along, some
of the #linux channies are on very advanced levels, people who are
working on
projects, etc. and they are not nearly as receptive to "How do I cat two
files together" type questions. One of
MY barriers to linux was the man pages. They seem really cryptic, at
first, but there's a "feel" to them, and once
that's comfortable, they are your friends. Sincere good luck, my friend,
and 73's

I've read the thread, and I stand up for what I've said here.

I've NEVER said communist China is great.

Please re-read my last post carefully before you get all uptight again.

Money. Money. Dude!

Money talks. Bull shit walks.

People (communist or capitalist) will flocks to where opportunity is,
and try to get whatever they can make out of it. Especially with a
potentially HUGH market like China has.

If you can make just one dollar from everybody in China for just one
day... Need I say more on how lucrative the reward would be!? ;-)

It's basic econ-101.

But do you know what communism is?

Let me tell you:With communism - YOUR MONEY IS MY MONEY. AND MY MONEY IS
MY MONEY. AND YOU'RE JUST A SLAVE TO ME. YOU'RE LUCKY THAT I GIVE YOU A
PIECE OF BREAD TO EAT EVERYDAY. NOW. GET BACK TO WORK.

Now go read some history, political science and economic literature.

Reading geek's news, worshipping RMS while drinking free beer won't get
you any where in the real world.

Hi,

I've just installed XF86 4.0 though managed to set it up under SUID (root)
only.

I would appreciate any help on how to change that

TIA

Matt
