Hi,
I use SuSE 6.4 with (SuSE-)Kernel 2.2.16. I have two SCSI-discs of the
same size, which I want to mirror. I used webmin to configure and
initialize the raid but it failed. The only message I got is the
following:
/proc/mdstat:
read_ahead not set
What is wrong? I tried to install the RAID with other discs on several
other computers. Always the same mistake. I followed step-by-step the
HOWTO.
Who can help me?
Thanks alot Christian
P.S.: The discs once had been formatted? Is it bad? Which Partitiontable
do I have to write on them (Linux native or Linux auto RAID, ...)?

Do you have a86 or as86 installed? You need the 16-bit assembler and that is what
this is supposed to be about.

Subject: Re: lilo not overwriting MBR
Date: Wed, 16 Aug 2000 20:47:01 +0200
The problem might be the entry "boot = /dev/hda5" in lilo.conf. This will or
let's say should install lilo on /dev/hda5. Change this into boot =
/dev/hda. If this doesn't work, you have the same problem as I do. First I
had lilo installed on /dev/hda3, I changed the entry in lilo.conf to boot =
/dev/hda using xemacs, saving the changes and installing lilo with
/sbin/lilo -v, the output is exactly like yours, the boot sector still being
read from /dev/hda3.
If this gives you any idea of what else there might be to do or if you find
a way to fix it, please let me know.
Yours,
robinson

I had lilo first installed on /dev/hda3 by yast2, booting from floppy, but
now I want to install lilo on the mbr. After changing the entry boot =
/dev/hda3 into boot = /dev/hda with xemacs, saving the changes and
installing lilo with /sbin/lilo -v the output still tells me that the boot
sector is read from /dev/hda3. If rebooting without floppy the system boots
right into win98.
How can I get lilo to be installed in the mbr ?
Hope anyone can help!

- Does Bonobo support automation, and if so does it use the same
mechanism that OLE (IDispatch, and dispinterfaces) ?
- Does it support in-place activation ?
- I have heard about Bonobo control. Is it the same as activeX

- And finally, is it possible to link documents using Bonobo (vs

Hello,
I have a thinkpad A20, with a bunch of preinstalled Windows software
that I don't want to loose. Slackware Linux was installed on the
machine, in two partitions (swap + root) with less than 0.2G left for
anything else (total of not much more than a gig). I want to shrink the
Win98 partition without destroying its contents. For some reason, the
defrag program in Win98 seems to think that certain stuff belongs at the
end of the drive. This prevents FIPS from working. fsresize also exits
with some message about clusters not on the drive. Scandisk and
dosfschk think that the drive is fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
John.

Hi! I installed linux on a computer, and it has a Yamaha OPL3-SAx (PCI
Pnp) card. The kernel recognizes it, and 'cat /dev/sndstat' gives what
we want to see.
The weird thing is that when playing mp3s or wavs the music is
'chopped' and 'repeated', something like an echo, except that the
music *is* interrupted.
If I cat an .au file to /dev/dsp or /dev/audio, then it works fine.
Any clues? I had problems with both mpg123 and xmms.

'ello,
I have a laptop with an ATI Rage LT Pro (ie a 4MB Mach64). In X it's a
lovely little thing (and almost does 3D without going up the sticks every 5
minutes ;) but on the console I'm still having bother getting any decent
resolution out of it.
It can run VCs in 80x60 which is plenty but when it comes to games I can't
get much decent out of it. For example, running squake on the console it
only gives the standard ModeX modes (max of 360x480). VESA should give
higher and I'm sure mach64 supports VESA. So, anyone know how to get the
console going better (this is on SuSE 6.4)?

hi leo,
on unix-based system each user has to be assigned to at least one group =
(=84users=93). in practice it'll be a few more, e.g. the =84modem=93 gro=
up.=20
Groups are necessary since certain access rights are defined by them,=20
e.g. accessing the modem device.=20
After creating the =84modem=93 group, you can add individual users to th=
is=20
group, and this group as a whole can be given access to the modem.
when you are logged in as -say- normal user, you type =84groups=93 to ge=
t a=20
list of all groups this normal user is a member of. The same command=20
typed as root (superuser) therefore returns a different list of groups.
As you are completely new to it, i'd recommend you get some sort of a=20
=84linux for beginners=93 guide where you can easily get a rough overvie=
w,=20
that'll be better than going through any great but difficult to=20
understand hardcore documentation.=20
Hope it helps,

hi,
i just checked it on my suse-system running helix-gnome.
As i ususally have no system sounds activated, i was surprised to see=20
that some sounds listed under =84sound events=93 work while most of them=
=20
don't. The error message was =84sound file assigned to this event does n=

Anyways, in the =84sound events=93 tab you can see which sound files are=
=20
assigned to the individual events, and where they are supposed to be=20
located. I would assume that some sound events are assigned to certain=20
sound files (predefined in gnome with exact name) that simply do not=20
exist on your machine.
perhaps it helps,
