Hi all!

Mandrake 7.1 installed, we have an NEC 1800 I just added PostScript to,
it was only PCL. It is on its own network port, everyone else is using
WinNT to print through the SMB service. The NT machine is
\\CA1-PDC-FUTCA, the printer share is \\CA1-PDC-FUTCA\NEC

When I use the printtool to set up the lpd, I try using the direct IP
address of the printer, and it complains it needs a queue. Why? If I try
to print using Samba, nothing happens, I never get anything printed, and
nothing shows up in the NT log files that it tried to connect.

Please don't ask me to talk to my IT people, we are a very small
organization and I am it!

Mark

I had a similar thought after seeing all of the quad ALR motherboards on
Ebay. My thought was to use the 533 Pentium Pro upgrades that are based on
the Celeron available from www.powerleap.com Probably wouldn't work though,
the original Celeron wasn't supposed to run dual (even though it can) let
alone quad. I'm can't spend the cash too find out unfortunately. Good
luck, sounds like fun.

Subject: Help! Problems with D-link DFE-650TX Pcmcia and RedHat 6.2 on Toshiba laptop
Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2000 15:10:28 -0500

Please forgive cross-post, I'm desperate.

Hi. I'm going absolutely crazy.
I've read all of this stuff, and I still can't get this D-Link going. It's
the endless "found link beat" "lost link beat" crisis in /var/log/messages.

Funny thing is, it's not just the D-link, it happened with a 3com 656
modem+adapter card too. Same exact thing.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2250CDT. I'm running RedHat 6.2, with pcmcia-cs
2.2.16-17 beta code (so the fixes aren't in the pcmcia upgrade yet). The
same exact thing happened with pcmcia-cs 2.2.16-3, and the whole 2.2.14-x
series. Ugh!

The card works perfectly at 10M or 100M in Windows 98 and 2000. I've tried
PCIC card mode and Cardbus/16-bit in the BIOS.

I downloaded a binary for fa_select, but it doesn't run (must not be
RedHat), and I downloaded the source for Jochen Friedrich's fix, but I don't
know C, and can't get it to compile. If I type "make fa_select" it errors on
"inline", and if I take the inline line out, it errors on the next line. I
also typed "gcc fa_select" but that obviously didn't help either.

What else... I've bounced it from irq 3 to 5 to 9 to 10, and none of those
worked.

Any ideas? I'm going mad. I don't care if the fix is slow, as long as it
works. I've put literally 30+ hours into this, and I've already switched
cards, and don't want to order another one.

If someone can send me a RedHat binary of fa_select, that might work, and
could you please tell me which init script to call it from?

Any help would be REALLY appreciated! Please cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Actually, yes the modem is a Cisco 675, and it probably will work like a
router, it does have dhcp capability (turned off right now) and other
capabilities, but only one port . When I first got the modem, I did have to run
a setup application in windoze and setup the username/password for the isp, and
also created a password to get into the modem.

I can telnet from outside, but end up having to enter the password for the
modem, and I end up logged into the modem, not my machine.

Are you using DNS?

have you tried to telnet using the domain name and compared it to
telneting using the address???

if you get a quick response via address and slow via domain name, it may
be a slow domain name server (or nis server if you are using that)

The Cisco 675 is in fact a router.
See here: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/pcat/675.htm
That would mean you are logging into the wrong IP address.
Your system would have to have a separate IP address. This would not
necessarily be an ISP
assigned IP.

Hmm, you can't just do 'mount -t msdos /dev/sdb1 /dos' as a temporary
measure? (Actually, I'd strongly recommend '... -t vfat ...' instead,
since I'm not sure if the msdos filesystem type understands long file
names.)

>But Vi wraps the lines around on the screen, and Vi is difficult enough

It'll wrap the lines on-screen, though not by default the actual text in
the file, in case that's confusing. You can tell what it's going to
write out as a single line by moving the cursor up and down; if it seems
to jump over a line on the screen, that's really part of the previous
line.

If you're desperate, then:

  echo '/dev/sdb1 /dos vfat defaults 0 0' >> /etc/fstab

... should work just fine, though of course the fact that you can blow
away your /etc/fstab by forgetting one > makes it a bit delicate. :)

SVGATextMode will do it, if you have it installed (unlikely at the stage
of the install you're at). That's the executable name, though the
package name is svgatextmode, all lower case.

Alternatively, a lower-tech and less flexible way to do it is to pass
the right parameters to the kernel on, say, the LILO boot prompt. This
can be a bit fiddly sometimes, and I'm not convinced that it works on
all graphics cards, but if you type, say, 'linux vga=ask' instead of
'linux' at the LILO boot prompt then you'll get a menu of video modes.

>What file do I need to edit? Or heaven forbid, is there a executable
>that will configure the column width?

vidmode, in the util-linux package (which you'll have installed, as it's
marked essential) can tweak a kernel image in /boot to have the
appropriate vga= parameter stored permanently, or you can poke
/etc/lilo.conf (and run '/sbin/lilo -v' to store the changes in the boot
record) to always supply that parameter. Try the above method first to
find out what magic numbers work.

Eventually, of course, just go for X, but the console is useful in
emergencies. :)

Indeed, you don't have to. However, Greg was doing things like 'print
header;' and 'print start_html;'. The header() and start_html()
functions are defined in the CGI module.

If you want to do "Content-type: html\r\n\r\n" etc. yourself, then go
right ahead, but the script given wouldn't have worked out of the box on
any platform.

For an IDE drive I should enable SCSI support? Damn :) No wonder this is
taking me so freaking long :) Thanks for the tip!

I don't understand how this is any different. The telnet session (or,
better, ssh) runs a shell on the remote machine and you then run
processes in that.

If you mean having a window pop up in an X session on the remote
machine, say, then you can play games with xauth and the $DISPLAY
environment variable to have that happen. If you want to open a program
in a virtual console on the remote host, then if you have the
appropriate permissions you can use 'open' (perhaps called 'vtopen').
The man pages are generally pretty useful reading.

>also is there any way to have 2 xservers running from the same machine?

'startx -- :1', say, will start up an X server on tty8 (i.e.
(Ctrl-)Alt-F8). If you use a display manager like xdm, gdm, or wdm
instead then you can probably persuade one of those to give you a second
display too.

>i know i may be asking a lot

Not at all; X is designed to work (almost) seamlessly over networks, and
programs running in X communicate with the server using a network
protocol even if they're on the same machine. Servers nested inside
themselves don't really work very well :), but apart from that it's
amazingly flexible. XFree86 4.0 can handle multiheaded displays
(multiple monitors) under certain circumstances, too.

Is it just that the volume's set very low, or is there a quality
problem? If it's the former, then aumix or some other mixer will do the
job for you. Can't help much with the latter; I usually try to do black
magic with the sound configuration here until it works and then leave it
well alone. :)

Beware of clones. A lot of them aren't really, and the Linux sound
people don't always get the full specifications. :(

>io=0x220
>irq=7
>dma=1

If you had those wrong, then you wouldn't get any sound at all, so that
sort of thing must be all right.

I'm using the same NIC on DHCP lan, but don't have the boot
prom. Conserning the modules, then you should use the 3c59x because it
is the one fitted for the 905TX. However 3Com has made some Linux
modules for this NIC, but I don't know the stability and performance
on these... but if you have problems, then try them out as well.

/Thomas

PS. I have access to a lot of computers that are using DHCP and also
has boot prom on, these are not 3Com but it works great.
