Subject: Lilo Installation Problem
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 03:55:08 GMT
Hi
I have a 20Gb hard disk. I partitioned it into 13Gb for Windows98 and
left the rest for Linux. I installed windows 98 and then used RedHat6.2
to boot in for installing Linux. I partitioned the remaining as 125Mb
for Linux Swap, 2775Mb for /home and rest for / and installed the Gnome
workstation. Installation goes well and I create a boot floppy and
restart the system. I only get LI on my screen and system hangs. I am
not sure if this because of lilo or any other problem. I tried various
ways but still it doesn't work. Urgently need help.
Thanks in advance
Vikram

Thanks for a detailed message with instructions!
I don't have time right now to try this, but I'll save your message
and take a look at it as soon as I can... It'll definitely be a
blessing not having to reboot to Windows ever again (currently, the
very only reason why I do it is to record CD's!!!)

Thanks Jack, but I'm not exactly sure what you are saying. I'm new to
Exceed as well, not just new to Linux, and I need a bit more detail.
Thanks,

All three of these cards are supported under XFree86 4.0 or later.

Hi all,
Thanks for giving this advice. However, I have tried that and yet it
still reports 16384k in dmesg! Have I done something wqrong in my setup?
Would appreciate some help here as my HD is swapping like crazy
everytime I open Communicator (But it could just be communicator's
quirks..... ;-)

Carl.

Jack,
Thanks for the reply but I am explicitly opting out of "bringing up Gnome on
login" because I don't want any automatic anything. I'm assuming that's
off-topic; the point is when I start Gnome remotely using "gmc" it fails to
work within Exceed (console error message is "** WARNING **: Root window
clicks will not work as no GNOME-compliant window manager could be found!")
although something does show up in Exceed with a few icons and a file
manager window but no desktop or anything I get in "startx", and if I start
it remotely with "startx" it boots fine but it uses the local display
instead of the remote display.

Not a problem with the controller, I am pretty certain that this uses the VIA
686 controller its the same one that is in this machine (FIC 503a with
K6-III/450) and has run Mandrake 6.1, and now 7.02.

This is a FAQ, so you could check deja for previous answers,
but I'll try to help you anyway.
You're suffering from the problem that the bios (and therefor lilo too)
cannot access any data beyond cylinder 1024 on the harddisk. There are
relative new extensions in the bios calls which enable newer bios'es to
go beyond that limit. But the lilo version in the current distro's don't
make use of these calls. So go get a newer version of lilo (search
freshmeat.net for the latest)
and install that. You'll need to boot with your bootfloppy for now,
untill you have the new lilo installed. If your bios doesn't support the
new calls, you'll need to create a /boot partition below cylinder 1024,
or remain booting from floppy.

Try to add the "linear" option to your LILO configuration, or remove
the option if it is already present.

I'm not sure about this, but try mounting it as a scsi device. It is
seen by the kernel as a scsi device (/dev/sXXX) instead of /dev/hdd.

If you have disabled the IDE CD interface, you can't use /dev/hdd to
refer to your CD Rom, you must use /dev/scd1. Try substitute
/dev/scd1 in your fstab.

lilo is installed where you tell it to install!
if you write in the lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
it is installed in the MBR (there's only one MBR in your entire PC)
if you write in the lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hdaXXX
it is installed in the start of the partition you defined.
You let the OS2 bootloader point to that partition (if that can be done
with this loader) and then lilo takes over the booting process for
linux.

Whooo, you are way more afraid than you need to be.
I've installed linux many times on many PC's, and always placed lilo in
the MBR. All you need to be afraid for is that windows will mess with
the MBR afterwards (if you need to reinstall eg.) or virus programs,
wrongfully assuming that lilo is a MBR virus. If you keep a boot floppy
aside, you'll always be able to restore lilo so these threads aren't
really worth worrying too much. If you're really afraid, you can place
lilo in the root partition on the 2nd HDD and make that the active
partition. If you (can) change the boot order to boot from that disc
first you can boot both linux and windows from there, otherwise you can
always boot linux from floppy, without any danger (which doesn't really
exist in the first place)
