I thought it did. I've always started X from tty0. Alt-Ctrl-F0 switches from
X to the console. Alt-F7 switched back to X. I've assumed this to mean that
although X is started from tty0 it actually displays on the first
non-allocated tty. In fact, I seem to remember reading this somewhere

Hi,

I've been struggling with this for about 5 hours now, so I'm desperatly
hoping for help.

One of my flatmates is leaving, thus I'm desperatly setting up a new
network server, the victim being an old DECpc LEV+, 486Dx2 16Mb RAM.
Setup is fine, but when booting with any kernel other than the setup
kernel, lilo starts it, it decompresses, it prints the first 4 or 5
lines of test and immediately start spewing out a screen of hex numbers
every half a second in bracks (ie [<c0388f46>]. After about 30 seconds
of this it reboots.

This occurs with Redhat 6.2, 6.1 and with a kernel I tried compiling
with Mandrake 7.1 on my workstation (compield for 486's of course). It's
definately the 386 kernel version, 2.2.14-5.0.

Any help would be much apprecaited.

 Cheers, James

hi!

I've tried finding an answer to this problem with deja and on the
debian-site... couldn't find anything and now I ask for your help:

I try to install debian 2.2 and everything runs fine, except that i'm
missing the option to install profiles instead of packages/dselect. I would
like to install a profile, as this seems easier than going through the
packages.

greetings and thanks fr yr attention,

Subject: redhat6.0 installation
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 10:52:05 GMT

Hello there,
Recently, I have installed Linux Redhat6.0 onto my PC, but I messed up
with the settings, so I decided to install it again. My PC has Pentium
100Mhz, 64Mb of RAM and 1G hard disk. OS/2 on it. I partitioned the
hard disk again using 'fdisk' .
The new partitions before re-installation of Redhat6.0 is as follows:

Partition Size System Type

/dev/hda1 706Mb OS/2
/dev/hda2 250Mb Linux Native
/dev/hda5 253Mb Linux Swap

Then, I installed Redhat6.0 from CD-ROM. Then I choosed to 'install'
rather than 'upgrade'.Then
the Installation Programme asked me if my PC has a SCSI adapter. I was
not sure, so I choosed 'no'.

So,can you tell me how I can find out whether my PC has a SCSI
adapter?

After a few procedures, I came to a point where I had to set the mount
points, so I did it like the following:

For OS/2 mount point=/mnt/hda1
For Linux Native mount point=/
For Linux Swap mount point=automatically specified by the Installation
Programme

The installation process continued - I formatted /dev/hda2 ,choosed the
application packages to be installed e.g. X Windows etc. Then, an error
message poped up on the screen says
" Mount failed: Device or resource busy "

So, I went back to the point where I set the mount points and only
changed mount point of OS/2
to '/dosc'. Then I did the same settings as before for the rest
Installation procedures, untill the same error message(" Mount failed:
Device or resource busy " ) poped up again.

Any suggestions?

I seem to remember you're correct! You certainly used to be able
to launch X on any tty you like, with "X tty1", for example. I don't
think that's still true nowadays, however, and I think it just takes
the first free tty. Man Xserver might shed some light.

Hi Rex,

We might b able 2 help each other since I have the opposite problem. I
can make the .php work fine, but NOT the inline .html stuff..

I compiled like this:

#!/bin/bash

cd /usr/src/apache_1.3.12
./configure --enable-module=so

cd ../php-4.0.1RC2/
./configure --with-mysql --with-apache=../apache_1.3.12 --enable-track-
vars
make
make install

cd ../apache_1.3.12/
./configure --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a
make
make install

cd ../php-4.0.1RC2/
cp php.ini-dist /usr/local/lib/php.ini

Mostly RTFM stuff... =)

And the <? in the .html will not work at all...

Anyone ?

I tried the --with-layout=Redhat to no avail.

I did the regular Static compile from the Install file with the
following
switches in the php4b directory

./configure --prefix=/etc/httpd
--with-mysql --with-xml
--with-apache=./apache_1.3.9
--with-ldap --with-pdf --with-expat
--with-zlib=/usr/src/linux-2.2.13/drivers/net/ --enable-track-vars

make
make install

Then in the apache_1.3.9 directory

./configure --prefix=/etc/httpd --activate-
module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a

(i did run configure on apache with just the prefix first)

Everything went fine, I took the new binary and ran it. The problem is
that it is not parsing the php files. Regular html works fine. I have
put the addtype strings in the httpd.conf file.

Thanks

Pent 133 with 2 drives. First Master drive is 2.1 Gig
which has 2 1 Gig partitions currently used for Win95. Second HD is
5.7Gig which is portioned EXT2 and swap for Linux. Using the RH GUI
install and configuring all the stuff I want,
set up display, LILO in MBR, etc. .
I proceed with the install. It churns away for a while with the
nifty GUI showing the progress. Then after it appears all the files
are installed a little window pops up with
"Performing post install configuration" and then it simply hangs.
I have to reboot via ctrl-alt-backspace or ctrl-alt-del to get out
of it. Of course upon reboot there is no Lilo and it merely reboots
to Win95. Any thoughts ?? The only thing I can think of that might
shed some light is EZ-BIOS which MaxBlaster required me to install
due to the drive size.

hi Kevin..
welcome to Linuxing..:-)
i have configured on my intel 440bx server with PIII-550 & 320 mb ram with
IDE 10.2 hard disk on red-hat 6.2 & i can say that the performance is
great--as i have both squid & ipchains(firewall cum Nat) on it. i have, to
ensure, also ru it on a celeron with 64 mb ram & the performance showed
just a bit degradation...IN short it will depend on ur machine
configuration.
the confuration i have till now(more than 6months now) havent given me any
probs!..
u can do transparent seting on squid & use the redirect option with
ipchains & hence need no configuration on the client pc..the ipchains
entries will look like this....
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -s 10.1.0.0/29 -i eth0 -j ACCEPT
/sbin/ipchains -A input -s 10.1.0.0/29 -i eth0 -p tcp -d 0/0 80 -j REDIRECT
3128 <<< this is used for transparent squid
/sbin/ipchains -A forward -s 10.1.0.0/29 -i eth1 -j MASQ
where eth1 is facing the ouside net !
u can go thru the squid man pages for setting up tranaparent squid.

good luck

Did run /sbin/lilo after amending /etc/lilo.conf? I know

Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 12:30:03 GMT

Hi

i have a quick question about this age old "i have x amount of mem, but
free reports only y" question

i've got a linux box with kernel 2.2[.15] w/256ram but doing free gives
me a reported mem of 128... i thought that this was something that the
2.2 kernels were to fix - well, the config options even give you a
option of max memory going up to 2gb!

is this simply something i've done wrong, or do i still need to pass
certain params via lilo on kernel boot ('append MEM=256' was it?).

thanks
ray

Normally, you still need that kernel option. In the lilo.conf file,
use
        append="mem=256M"
Do not forget to run /sbin/lilo after changing /etc/lilo.conf!

Hi

I had the same problem using a 32x Creative when using an older distro
(~Slack 3.5) but it disappeared when I upgraded. I think the driver was
only running with code suitable for a 24x drive or so. As for VMWare, since
it accesses the drive via Linux, it follows that it suffers the same fate.
Maybe trying different distros or a kernel upgrade would help?

This is what Lilo is for... heres what i did...
hda ------ Linux drive, Two partitions (swap and /) , LILO
boots, i have it set up to look on hdc1 for "win2k" and its fine...
the way you do this will be described below
hdc -------- Win2k drive, Two Partitions (active and backups)

in /etc/lilo.conf you can add another entry... just copy the one
thats there and change it to suit your needs... make the label
something you can remember (win, win98, dos, os2, etc) and make sure
you give it the right partition!
now put the entry you just created at the top of the file (before the
one you copied _from_) so it will boot by default, unless you wanna
use linux by default :o)

a few cool features...
- Mount your fat16/32 drives so you can copy files between them (with
linux only, windows doesnt like non-win drives)
- Save your skin ... i cant count how many times ive ripped off a
pound of flesh from my hands from tryin to screw around with my hard
drives...

its easier since you just have to type which os you wanna start at
boot time, but if youre gonna install, and its your first time, i
WOULD take out the win drive unless youve taken your time prepping for
it... anyway, ive rambled enough... if you need me to explain in a
little more detail or have corrections ... MAIL ME!!

Subject: run linux from a CD
Date: Mon, 21 Aug 2000 15:55:58 +0200

Hi,
I've been trying to setup a Mini-Linux that boots from CD and runs without
further installation.
The tool I've been using for this is called YARD (
http://www.croftj.net/~fawcett/yard/ ).
Now as far as I can understand, I have to use SYSLINUX to setup a filesystem for
a CD (not lilo or loadlin).
Now, when I start booting from CD I get the following bootmessages:

...
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
VFS: Mounted root (msdos filesystem (readonly).
change_root: old root has d_count=1
Trying to unmount old root ... okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 40k freed
Warning: unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

So if there is anyone out there who also used yard with a CD (it works fine with
Disks) or who has a different way of setting up a Mini-Linux on a CD...please
help me out.
