You could try Debian, whose 'apt-get' tool will automatically go and get
the dependencies for you. :) 'apt-get install package-name' is all you
need.

If you also want ease of use and maintenance, then Id suggest Debain.
Im setting up a server for my home network and it,s easier than I
expected, especially the package management.
It may seem hard at the beginning but once youre in the matter, youll
love it.

Subject: Ethernet card config

Hi,
I recently installed Red Hat Linux (I believe 6.1?, I'm new to Linux) and
got it installed ok, but can't seem to set up my ethernet card to access the
internet (cable modem). My card is a Davicom 9102, and I didn't see any drivers
for this card in the ethernet configuration. Does anyone know if another driver
might work or where I might be able to find drivers that will work with Red
hat?

Thanks,

Subject: After upgrading to unstable, lost internet connection and.HELP PLEASE

On aug 12-14, I upgraded my debian to "unstable" and since then I can
not get to internet! I do get the connection establish, but there is no
data flowing, can't get to any web site nor send/receive e-mail nor ping

anywhere like www.debian.org. I know that the connection is alive
(picking up the phone and listening the noise). Please help, I have
tried many things, but no success (6 months of linux experiance and I
still love it). I had no choice but to boot windoze to write this
e-mail. Here is some information about the system:

Here are the errors I got during the dist-upgrade if they are any

- lprng
=> sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I uninstalled linuxconf, masquerade thinking that might give me a break,

but nothing changed. So I reinstalled them.
Here is my story. I thought it must be because of some firewall or masq
or proxy so I tried to give as much information as I can think of.
Please help. Thanks.

Sure. I have not yet written the code to put ascii or other handling
into the PDQ files. In the meantime, you can simply print everything
via postscript. It's not quite as fast, but it'll work.

You should be able to print fine from other programs by specifying a
suitable pdq command or just xpdq instead of lpr.

After searching the internet, I found the answer that solved my problem.

Anyone wanting to run a program in xwindows at specific times or intervals
can use crontab. First read the man pages by typing the following at the
unix prompt (found in any terminal):

man crontab

Learn how to write a basic cron statement.

Any xwindow program can be activated on your display server by adding
-display :0.0

For example:

59 15 * * * acroread -display :0.0

This will activate Adobe Acrobat Reader at 3:15pm each day within Xwindows!

Subject: Kernel upgrade
Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2000 15:57:46 -0500

Hi

I've successfully downloaded, configured, and (I think!) compiled the 2.2.16
kernel on my 2.2.14.x box (RH6.2). However, the kernel won't boot. When
the system comes up, lilo starts and allows me to choose which kernel to
boot. Then, I get a "Loading......", and finally "Uncompressing Linux...
OK, booting the kernel." And that's it! This has happened on 2 different
machines (thought I had a hardware problem on the first one) and I have
{"make mrproper" "make config" "make dep" "make zImage"} 3 different times,
thinking that I had a hardware problem myself. I have also tried to create
a bootable floppy with this kernel, with no different results (dd if=zImage
of=/dev/fd0). My kernel is WAY smaller than RedHat's, as I have not
compiled all of the junk in that they do, so I don't (think) I need the
bzImage version, as I am not getting any errors at compile time.

I believe that I have done all that I need to do, unless the 2.2.x kernel
needs lots of other things to happen. I've copied the zImage to
/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16, and updating the /etc/lilo.conf to reflect the new
kernel. I've also copied the /usr/src/linux/vmlinux to
/boot/vmlinux-2.2.16. This is what we have always done in the past, and it
has worked fine before (albeit not with the 2.2.16 kernel).

Any ideas?

Hi.

I've got an ISA PnP D-Link DE-220 NIC, and I've installed RH 5.2 (the only
version I have available). The setup procedure does not detect my card.
Using linuxconf I've set the appropriate IP, DNS, Gateway, I've set the

can't get on the Internet (errmsg: host lookup failed). So how do I get my
network card to work? Works fine with Windoze.

I am almost a complete newbie to Linux, at least as a personal operating
system, I've searched for documentation, but I can't find what I need.
Please help me get on the Internet with Linux, I've got other problems (like
X won't work with my ATI Rage Fury Pro AGP) but I'm sure I could solve those
with an OS upgrade, but I need to get online first!!!

Thanks,
