I installed SuSE 6.4 which comes with XFree86 3.3.6 . The included driver
ATI Mach64 *does not* work on the IBM thinkpads (this is a well known old
problem) and the new XFree86 4.* doesn't offer accelerated video yet. The
solution is to install XFree86 3.3.6 and substitute the driver for a
patched one which is somewhere in the net (I have it in case you need it).
I don't know which version of XFree86 ships with RH 6.1, but you may try
the same approach (just changing the driver for the patched one).
Good luck with the installation,
C.

Date: 31 Aug 2000 05:38:23 GMT
Hi,
I can make WaveLAN IEEE 802.11 pcmcia card work (wavelan2_cs.o); I can
also make a pcmica hard disk (ide_cs.o) work through a PCMCIA-IDE
converter. However, I cannot make them work together even though my
notebook has two PCMCIA slots. If I put WaveLAN first and then insert
hard disk, linux says "lost interrupt". If I put the hard disk first,
"network start eth0" fails (Transmit timeout).
Another network card (pcnet_cs.o) does not have the same problem if
the disk is inserted first. However, I get "eth0: interrupt(s)
dropped!" occasionally. What does this mean?
I am running Redhat 6.2. Does anybody have suggestions? Thanks!

I forgot to say that mine is a 1483, but beside CPU and *screen*
everything else is the same, including the ATI Rage Mobility-M video chip.
I just read that the 1422 is SVGA only: the SVGA driver also needs to be
replaced by a patched one. Tell me if you need the drivers. Bye.

I just went through this (although this is probably a FAQ). First,
is your modem a PCI internal modem? Is it a real modem or winmodem?
USR/3Com have different models, only real modems will work.
Under window, use the Start-->Settings-->Control Palen-->System,
Device Tab, and click to expand Modem. Select your modem and
note the Com port it reports, the IRQ it uses, and the
I/O address range it uses.
My USR/3Com PCI Modem uses Com5. Under Linux, you will probably have
to create the /dev entries for this port: ls -l /dev/cua* and
ls -l /dev/ttyS*. You will probably find entries for 0-3, which
correspond to com1-com4. use "mknod" and "chmod" to creat a similar
pair for cua4 and ttyS4.
Next, you'll need to configure the serial line at each boot.
You need to add a 'setserial' command to rc.local. The exact
details of the setserial depend, and I don't have my configuration
handy, but ask me if you want the details---it is unlikely you will
figure out the combination of arguments that work correctly yourself.
(I find the infor after a lot of searching!)
Finally, make a symbolic line from /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS4. Now
everything should work.
Note that this USR/3Com modem and RedHat 6.2 have a probem with FTP.
Not with HTTP or telnet, but FTP will hang every time. I've seen
others post about that problem but I have never seen a resolution
posted. People have speculated it has to do with the fact that
this modem uses a non-standard UART internally.

Thanks to all who replied to help with my original
question. The missing piece was telling me I
need to specify the correct filesystem ext2,
not just the low-level format H1440, following
the mount command.
I feel less dumb now, seeing that
so many people had different ideas about how
to go about something as simple as backing
up a few files on a floppy!
Appreciative,

If you have properly configured /resolv.conf

your ISP does not return ping packets. Mine
doesn't.
Try pinging something else. I always use

Subject: Installing Red Hat Linux 6.1
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 07:29:08 GMT
Hello everybody,
I've been trying to install Red Hat Linux 6.1 on my computer. My question
is about partitions that Linux creates while installing. How big they have
to be? I have tried to install it 3 or four times and each time it tells me
that some partition isn't big enough.
Last time it was /usr partition. If someone could give me an idea how much
should I give for each partition, it would really help me out.
Thank you very much,
Sincerely,
Mike
P.S. Reason why I want to install Linux customly is that I want to run
multiple operating systems. I believe that custom instalation was the only
one that didn't erase all data.

There are a lot of FAQ and HOWTO about this problem. Baiscally you
need some space on the / partition where /etc and /dev are, but
not so much, usually 200 Mb are enough for this. Then you need
some space for /home, that depends how much user you have and
what kind of application they are running. For personal use
without StarOffice 200Mb should be OK. The /usr and /var are
critical, because a LOT of software and documents and other
things goes in these directories, so put at least 1~1.5 Gb on them.
If you have a lot of space, put some also into /tmp.

Subject: Please Help: Problems after recompiling kernel
I just recompiled my kernel for the first time and as is to be expected
I screwed it up somewhere. I followed all the instructions and felt
pretty proud about it but now I can't find my cd burner anymore. Kudzu
tells me on startup that it no longer exists. When I compiled the
SCSI support I included all the Adaptec drivers but mine wasn't in the
list. I have an Adaptec 2940 SCSI card. Does anyone know which part of
xconfig I need to reset to get my SCSI card back? It is a dual
SCSI card and my scanner hangs off it as well so I have lost that too.
I'm running RedHat 6.2
Also I now get an error message at startup that says "fstype devpts not
supported". I can't spot this fstype in the Kernel Configuration so any
pointers to that would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Hi Dan,
I got one thing left for you to try:
Found this on the web once, don't remember the URL though,
Where ever it says /dev/hdc, you'll need to change it to /dev/hda.
****************************************************************************
Windows might give you problems when not booting it from the first
ide-hdd
Configure lilo as follows:
other=/boot/win98.bootsect
label=win98
table=/dev/hda
The file called /boot/win98.bootsect is to be created as follows:
dd if=/dev/hda of=/boot/win98.bootsect count=1 (bs=512, defaults to
this)
assuming it's a FAT32 filesystem, the byte at offset 0x40, which now
contains
the value 0x80 (bios-code for the first ide-disc), should be changed to
0x81, the bios code for the second ide-disc.
make sure to get the right byte, it's FAT size dependant, and the right
value
to change it to: 0x80 is bios number for first disk, 0x81 is 2nd, etc.
Although hda is disc one at ide0 and hdb is ide0:disc2, hdc=ide1:disc1
and
hdd=ide1:disc2 , this doesn't mean hda=0x80 for the bios!

Subject: SCSI ncr53c8xx module
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 10:18:37 GMT
I have a problem on a RedHat 6.1 system.
I am trying to upgrade a kernel from 2.2.12 to 2.2.16 which works fine
apart from one problem loading the SCSI module. I have a working 2.2.16
kernel which loads all modules I need (network, nfs etc.) but only with
the SCSI driver (ncr53c8xx) in the kernel and not as a module. I have
created the initial ram disk (initrd) and I have tried different append
options to lilo but I cannot get the kernel to load the ncr53c8xx
driver as a module, although it is a module with the 2.2.12 kernel.
When I try and boot the 2.2.16 kernel with the modular SCSI driver I
get messages on the console like scsi: 0 hosts and then VFS Kernel
Panic can't mount root filesystem, so it looks as though the module
isn't loaded and therefore the root disk isn't detected.
Here is what I get when I look in the proc filesystem with the 2.2.16
kernel loaded:
In /proc/scsi/ncr53cxx there are 3 files:
0
1
2
cat on any one of the files gives the following information on first
line:
Chip NCR53C896, device id 0xb, revision id 0x1
I have tried enabling most of the low level SCSI modules including the
sym53c8xx and ncr53c7,8xx and I am running out of ideas now.
Any help appreciated.

Subject: Re: automounting using sun yp maps?
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 10:31:12 GMT
Hallo,
the map is not called automount.master but auto_master on your sunbox
and auto.master on your linuxbox. To use them on your sunbox do the
following:
1) check out wether the sunbox exports the automaps:
on your sunbox type:
ypcat auto_master
ypcat auto_yourmap
you should get the correct maps back.
1a)If this is not the case export them on your sunbox:
-the maps auto.master and auto.yourmap
(with a dot for historical reasons)
should appear in the line beginning with "all:"
in /var/yp/Makefile. If not, add them.
-cd /var/yp
-/usr/ccs/bin/make
2) On your linuxbox type:
ypcat auto.master
ypcat auto.yourmap
you should get the maps back.. otherwise
3) Maybe you need to set a link on your linuxbox from
auto_master -> auto.master
auto_yourmap -> auto.yourmap
4) Restart the autofs:
?/init.d/autofs stop
?/init.d/autofs start
It should work now. The init.d directory resides in /sbin if you`e using
a SuSe distribution and in /etc/rc.d if you are using RedHat. I don`t
know about any other distributions...
Cheers

Subject: Help Please... Difficult mail problem.
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 13:12:40 +0200
I have a huge problem.
I need to build some kind of mail router. Let me axplain. I work at
company acme and we have [EMAIL PROTECTED] as mail adres. Now, we have
several company's each with their own e-mail domain and e-mail
addresses. We are going to change the name of our company and we want
everyone to have a universal e-mail address.
Now what I want to do is place a mail-routing machine on the internet
(at a ISP) wich will recieve all the mail for the new domain-name (say
acme-international.com). The old situation on the company's will remain
and all that the machine at our ISP has to do is search through some
list or something and forward the message to the correct person.
Example:
I have a Simon Gruber working at our plant in New York. The company's
mail domain is acmeny.com
His e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]
His new e-mail address would be [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The mail-router receives the mail for
[EMAIL PROTECTED], looks up the recipient in a file or
something reads the forward address [EMAIL PROTECTED] and then
forwards it to this mail address.
I have been looking into postfix and some other programs to do this but
I'm somewhat of a linux-newbie and I do'nt know exactly how to do this.
My boss wants me to have it done before monday and if I screw up 1300
people will have no mail :(
So... HELP!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
