I just went through this. Here's how I remember fixing it (as root, of
course):
1) make sure /etc/conf.modules exists with the line:
alias scsi_hostadapter ncr53c8xx
RedHat is somewhat uncertain as to whether it wants conf.modules or
modules.conf, but mkinitrd only looks at
conf.modules.
2) do 'mkinitrd --with=ncr53c8xx /boot/initrd-2.2.16-3.img 2.2.16-3'
The --with=ncr53c8xx was the key for me. mkinitrd is supposed to add
scsi modules automatically, but it wouldn't for me.
3) add to /etc/lilo.conf as follows (modify to suit your system):
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-3
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.16-3.img
read-only
root=/dev/sdb9 (I'm sure this will be different for
you)
4) reboot
Otherwise, I suppose you could always compile the module into the
kernel, which it sounds like you tried.

Subject: help: rpm locks up system
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 22:25:18 GMT
Here is my problem.
I accidentally installed two versions of MandrakeUpdate (on a
800Athlon/128M/MAndrake7.1). I thought I had selected upgrade in
Kpackage when I was doing it, but apparently it did not work. Now every
time I try to install any package using ANY means (Kpackage, rpmDrake,
rpm from terminal) the system completely hangs up. All I can see is the
swap being slowly eaten up and eventually everything locks and I have to
turn off the computer. I couldn't even install helix-gnome downloads all
packages and then does the same thing with the swap.
I can't uninstall the MandrakeUpdate with kPackage or rpmdrake, because
they tell me that MandrakeUpdate points to multiple packages.
I tried:
rpm -e --allmatches MandrakeUpdate
but it leads to the process explained above? Is there any other way I
can get rid of MandrakeUpdate, except for the rpm related ways?
Any help would be appreciated!
Peter

Uhhm neither Linux nor FreeBSD or any other Unix system can hold 500.000 mailboxes
and therefor users.
The password wile can only handle 64K on users. thats no 500000 users!

I am completly ammused by people pointing to sever SMTP MTA's without
seeing the big picture (except for the last person).
500000 user accounts is almost impossible (specially on linux it stops ad
user account 65535).
Imagine the amount of diskspace you need and teh ammount of INodes.
I think you are way out of your league with Linux. Now you are only
talking about SMTP what about pop3 which is a real resource hog when it
comes to collecting mail! 1 systems is not enough!

Hey, thanks!
Ranish Partition Manager worked.
I think that it's better than fdisk.exe that comes with DOS.
Perhaps RPM should be part of DOS in place of fdisk.

The "Pizza app" was for managing pizza shop _sales_. Probably of
limited usefulness to what is essentially a scheduling application.
I don't think there's any "generic" web-based booking system for
restaurants yet, not as free software, anyways.

Hello,
I'm asking myself this very same question. Should I create a swap
partition along with the partition I created for RedHat? How should the
partitions be sized?
Well, I think that Brian was right when he said to create 1 partition and
then let the RedHat installer walk you through whatever else you need.
Thanks Brian!!!
