I have Caldera Open Linux 2.2. The root password has expired. I have
tried starting linux in single user mode ( lilo - linux single ). I
cannot change the root password. I get this error when typing
the "passwd root" command :
PAM_pwdb[260]: user (root/0) update failed; pwdb: another process has
locked resource
This system is not critical, but I have invested alot of time
configuring it over the last year. I prefer not to lose that investment.

Loadlin is a dos/windoze program that lets you leave windows (or dos) and
go directly into linux. You can set it up as one of the boot options in a
windoze config.sys menu too. I have been using it with win 98 with no
problems.
Check out "The Linux+Windows 95 Reference Page" (a mini-HOWTO) at:
http://www.eskimo.com/~praxis/ and the links therefrom.
It covers using loadlin to dual boot with Windoze 98 as well and may be
more up to date than the mini-HOWTO that came with your distribution.

This is Toshiba satelite 1950CT, 486 25mhz(maybe), with Zircom poket

What is the easiest way to install redhat linux cd that I have on this
machine?
my goal here is to do Internet web browsing only.
I'm not even gonna dial from this machine, just to connect to my home
network's NAT server.
I already have redhat linux machine going on another machine.
Is there an easy way to create some sort of boot disk to connect to the
other machine and install?
or maybe I don't even need to install anything but, a way to boot and
connect to that redhat machine and run x window remotely? is this possible?

In order to reclaim some space I had put in /home I decided to just
reinstall
Mandrake 7.1. Before doing so my home network was working just fine with
everything being autodected.
After the install I cannot get my NIC (Winbond 89C940) to configure. In
DrakConf it properly identifies it but the configure tool shows it at IRQ 5
(same IRQ as my soundcard). I don't have an option to change that to IRQ 11
whichis where it should be. In Linuxconf I can configure it using ne2k-pci
and set it at irq 11 but it still fails. Ifconfig can't even find eth0!
Here is what syslog says when I activate changes:

the boot process you will select network install, off an ftp server

(/mnt/cdrom) and make sure you're running an ftp server.
in /etc/inetd.conf make sure the line with wu-ftp(or whatever redhat
uses these days) is uncommented and you've run /etc/rc.d/init.d/inetd
restart
should work like a charm

Sorry, I am a novice linux user. I need more help for build application
from source. I got print-4.0a2 from the site you provided, I expanded it
under /usr/local/src.
I follow the the install instruction and type
./configure
make
make install
Then I go to the Ghost directory. And follows the README the following
command in the parent directory...
aclocal
autoconf
automake
./configure
make ghost
...Oh, when I installed RH 6.2 I just choosed the Workstation option. So
I think I don't have source of Ghostscript...
Then I read rest of instruction I found that I couldn't cut up with
instruction.
What library or RPM must I install first?
If I make something wrong. How can I rollback all changes?
This is the second time I try to build an application from tar ball.
Please help...
BTW, when I type "./configure .... make install" a lot of message
displayed. I don't know those message are normal or not.

Yes. You need to make a network-installation floppy disk. Put your rh
cd into your current linux machine, a blank floppy into the floppy
drive, mount the cd and use dd to make the floppy:
dd if=/mnt/cdrom/images/bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0H1440
When this finishes, move the floppy to the laptop, connect the two
machines via ethernet and turn on the laptop (leave the RH cd in the
other box).
You'll need to export the cdrom drive and have nfs running first though.

When you reinstall linux you should be able to choose to format the
linux partitions as well as which linux partitions to format if you
don't want to format them all. In RedHat you do this just after the
partitioning section.
