All, I got the answer from Kevin in an earlier post which I'd forgotten

I was missing the metapackages.xml, packages.xml and updates.xml files.

Run Xconfigurator. If your monitor isn't in the menu then pick custom
monitor. You can use Xconfigurator to try various combinations of
refresh rates, resolutions and depths. You should be able to find a
setting that works.

I've installed RedHat 6.1 with Gnome and KDE on a old laptop I have a
compaq presario 1681 with just Linux on it (no dual op system)
I've been having to adjust the X86Config file to get the video
correct. Upon the last trial it was much worse and couldn't read the
screen (kept flickering trying to start the Gnome logon). After
pressing the ctrl-z and ctrl-x and many others to get to stop I got to
the shell login prompt. I changed the X86Config file back to the
previous one and rebooted. This is the error I'm getting now and I'm
not sure what I need to do to correct it.

Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2000 13:31:40 -0400
Hello,
I've setup my apache server without a glitch. It runs smoothly, but now
I want to add a VirtualHost. It works fine : both adresses are accesible
from the web and the server handles the accesses correctly. Except for one
thing. In one of my virtual hosts, I want the directory index to be
index.shtml. I added the line
DirectoryIndex index.shtml index.html
in the default context. It didn't work: the virtual host using index.shtml
returns a 404 saying it can't find index.html. So I added the line in the
virtual host section, didn't work either! I then added the line in the
Directory section describing the root of that virtual host and it still
didn't work! What's going on?!?!
Please help me!

I've just installed Red Hat 6.2 and use Boot Magic to load linux or

boot: prompt to choose linux or Win98. Since I use Boot Magic, do I need
to remove LILO (and if so, how do I remove it)? Or, if I need to have
LILO to load linux, how can I cange its configuration to load ONLY
linux?
Thanks,

I have a Diamond Viper V330 that I would like to see XFree86 run on. So far

the resolutions the Win98 side can get (800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864,

Date: 4 Sep 2000 18:33:00 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I recently wrote of a problem
I was having with C++ and RH 6.2 .
The problem is that RH 6.0 set my PATH to:
/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
:/home/myname/bin
RH 6.2 sets the PATH to:
/usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:
:home/myname/bin:/usr/local/netscape
It seems that there are include files in
/usr/local/bin that cause my C++ compilations to
fail.
There are two problems:
(1) I can't find anyone other than "anachron" whose
initial PATH is as given above. Why am I getting
my initial path from anachron?
(2) Yes, yes, I know how to fix this by doing a
force in /etc/profile, or in the profile given by
anachron -- is there a safer way of doing this?
Thanks in advance

I have a V330 myself, and it is well supported. To get the higher
resolutions, you could try out Xconfigurator.
However it gave me a little trouble, so you could also try XF86Setup (not
installed by default, but is on the CD) or xf86config. The last one is a
pretty simple, textbased one, which nearly always works if you know your
hardware well...

For network, try running netcfg or linuxconf.
For sound, run sndconfig.
For CD-RW, you should read the CD-Writing-HOWTO.

Set it to linux as default with a dealay (timeout) of one decisecond - it
seems like booting immediately.

Hi Steve,
I was wondering if you can boot from a floppy. If you can I would
try to get the new Lilo. I think it is version 21.5. It is available from
ftp://ftp.metalab.org . All you have to do is untar it, I believe, in the
/usr/src
directory and go in to the new directory it just created and do QuickInstall
It will compile and install it. It asks you questions along the way. I had to
add
lba32 to the lilo.conf file to accept my new 20 gb WD hard drive. I also
changed the delay factor from 5 to 50 to be able to have more time
to press the shift key on boot up to see the lilo menu. In my old computer
whos bios wouldn't accept a large hard drive I added a Promise DriveMAX
card that extends the bios to recognize up to 132 gb of hard drive.

Hi guys!
My AMD K7-equipped PC has 128 MB NVRAM installed; both BIOS and Windows
98 detect 128 MB but RedHat 6.2 doesn't.
Initially I noticed that X-windows was extremely slow; then using
commands free, top and dmesg I was surprised when I read "14xxx/16384 kb
available".
How can I make Linux detect all the RAM installed?
Other hardware information:
AMD K7 - 700 MHz
128 MB NVRAM
13 GB EIDE Hard Disk
ATI All in Wonder PRO Video card
Yamaha SV550 Sound card (which is declared unsupported by sndconfig)
1 CD-ROM IDE, 1 CD-ROM writer IDE.
RealTek RTL 8139 Network Card
NO SCSI devices installed

I would like a non-blinking block cursor compiled into the kernel. I don't
particularly like the default blinking underline cursor that comes with
Debian 2.2. Is there a way to achieve this? I've read VGA-softcursor.txt in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation but it doesn't say how to enalne it in the
kernel - only through 'echo' commands. I've tried looking at the various vga
header files in the source tree but can't find it.
Thanks.

NVRAM??? Are you sure, that you do not mean SDRAM?

Well yes. Thats pretty little ram to use, when you have 128Mb...

Add a 'append = "mem=128M"' line to your /etc/lilo.conf. That should fix
it.

Probably not. It is more likely a problem with KDE or GNOME.
If you are running KDE, you can change the icon settings from the
controlpanel.
The size of the panel can be adjusted by rightclicking on the panel and
choose settings. Then you will get the option of small/normal/huge size of
the panel.
If you are running GNOME, I'm afraid, I can't help you...

I installed RH6.1 on a 701C from SCSI-CDROM, so I can't
comment on an NFS installation. Attempting a graphical
installation, it didn't recognize the video hardware, so
I did a text-mode install, then installed X later. Ran
Xconfigurator and specified video chip as C&T 65545 and
the display as "LCD Panel 640x480".
It works fine. However, it's a small machine by today's
standards, and either KDE and GNOME might be a bit heavy
for it.

The ZIP ZOOM SCSI card has the following settings according to the

I've added the following line to lilo.conf (the mem statement is just

I've added the following line to fstab:
