You mean via a direct root telnet? Or that it even bars a
normal telnet followed by an su? (Neither of which are
particularly good ideas...)
It might be good to get a SSH server, plus clients. You can
ssh in as a normal user, and then su. That way you won't have
to send the password in clear (one reason why direct root telnet
is usually prohibited; plus, su usually sends messages to a
system log, which redirected to a printer or other system can
leave a trail listing compromised accounts. The latter
reason suggests that allowing a direct root-login with
ssh can still be a bad idea).
http://www.openssh.com/
for an open version. They mention RHAT RPMs on their site.
They don't seem to list non-'nix clients, but there are
implementations (at least of the 1.x protocols) like a TeraTerm
module for Windows, and so forth. I've also seen CLI versions
of ssh and scp (ssh'd version of copy; quite nifty for
non-interactive file transfer) for NT.

Hi!
I have a problem installing from an NFS image residing on the server's
CDROM.
The server exports to 7 other machines the / and /cdrom directories and
the
7 machines are also in /etc/hosts.equiv.
I mounted the /cdrom on the server but I still have an error message
when trying
to install over the network:
mount: RPC: Program not registered
Any ideea?
Thanks!

The problem is *not* in XF86Config. This file is used to set the keyboard
type, mouse settings (number of buttons, scrolling, baud rate, etc),
monitor type and your screen resolution (+Xserver type).
The icons on your desktop will depend on the window manager you used,
KDE, Gnome, AfterStep, etc.
Hope this helps.

I have problems getting my Token ring card to work in linux ( mandrake
7.1 )
the card is an IBM lanstreamer ( PCI )
The linux pc is the only non windows pc on the Token ring based LAN
I'm kind of a newbie with linux so I've tried anything I could think of
to get it to work, but it doesn't help. In the detection utility the
card is found, but in I/O an IRQ it has -1, could it be that it is
conflicting with the soundcard, which by the way works fine. I've setup
the needed tcp/ip addresses (at least I think I have)..
Any suggestions to what I can do to get it to work

I have the same problem with a Redhat-6.2-installed XFree86. I have a
feeling that I misdefined my monitor in the XF68Config. Does anyone know
about a generic CyberMax monitor? It came with my CyberMax system this

For some reason your modem is not sending back "CONNECT" It is probably
some modem options that is misset. If nothing else replace CONNECT with
CARRIER
since that IS sent.
Actually you have worse problems. You do not have your IRQ set up
properly Not the absurdly long time (19 sec) between ATZ and receiving
OK. Finally do not use ATZ. Its only advantage is that it is short. Its
disadvantage is taht it often totally missets the modem.
Use AT&F or AT&F1 for sportsters and then set up the individual features
of the modem separately.

Note the immediate response not 20 sec delay. On upgrading you messed up

Thanks, but I'm sure. No matter what partition is active, Windows
does not boot. I also restored the LILO backup "boot.0300", but it
did not help.
Here are the relevant things I did to the disk (in order).
Windows Linux
------- -----
1 Disable Goback
2 Repartition with fips
3 Install Redhat 6.2, LILO dual boot
4 Enable Goback
5 Change LILO boot device default
Both Windows and Linux booted fine through step 4. However, after
I changed the default boot device (step 5), Windows failed to boot.
Unfortunately (in this case), LILO by default does not make a
backup MBR when a backup already exists. A backup taken at step 3
existed when I ran LILO again in step 5, so I don't have a backup MBR
for when Goback is enabled. I suspect the step 3 backup doesn't work
because Goback tampers with the MBR.
Since my earlier post I found documentation for this problem on
the Goback support pages (www.goback.com/support.cfm). I will try
their solution tonight and try to remember to report my experience to
this group.

Dear All,
How to display PATH anytime instead of just a "$' in RedHat ksh? I remember
PS1 and PWD should be used. But I can't get the exact expression of that.
By the way, I can't find .profile under my home directory. Why? Someone told

Solaris?
Thanks,

That should be fine (assuming they are all the same version). Now just
update /etc/lilo.conf to point to your new kernel, run lilo (do both as
root) and reboot.

Has anyone had experience setting up a Raid 1 device after RH6.2 is
installed to the first drive?
e2fsck craps out with superblock/partition table errors on /dev/md5
after mkraid is successful.
I'm tring to setup Raid 1 between 2 ide disks: hda8 & hdc8.
The hard drives are identical, partitioned the same.
hda has a working RedHat 6.2 install, upgraded to the 2.2.16 kernel.
with kernel custom compiled to include Raid 1.
I used the RedHat "linux rescue" CD boot & copied my raidtab into /etc
from a floppy (saved the raidtab from an initial install done to these
drives).
did a:
dd if=/dev/hda8 of=/dev/hdc8
then
issued mkraid /dev/md5 (for hda8 & hdc8)
after 15 min (1 gig partition), /proc/mdstat showed a functional md5
mount -t ext2 /dev/md5 /mnt/test
Worked! - Data was intact from hda8 !
BUT.......
umount /mnt/test
e2fsck /dev/md5 won't work!
Craps out with:
"The filesystem size (according to the superblock) is 257032 blocks.
The physical size of the device is 257008 blocks.
Either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt!"
I also tried:
mkraid --really-force /dev/md5
good md5 - e2fsck still gives the same message!
Can anyone tell me how to get /dev/md5's superblock to work with
e2fsck?
raidtab:
[snip md1 to md4 - all same as md5 - all md's are problem with e2fsck]
raiddev /dev/md5
raid-level 1
nr-raid-disks 2
chunk-size 64k
persistent-superblock 1
#nr-spare-disks 0
device /dev/hda8
raid-disk 0
device /dev/hdc8
raid-disk 1

No, the 895C is a PCL3 compatible printer, and as such should work with
any of the PCL3 drivers. A good driver to try is cdj890, but even the
standard Deskjet 550C driver should work fine (although with lower
quality).
pnm2ppa works with the PPA printers, such as the Deskjet 700 series, 820
or 1100.

Thank you in advance for reading this and helping me.
I am running into the follwoing problem:
When booting my machine (kernel 2.2.5.15 version - RedHat 6.0
build) it stops on the "Finding modules dependencies" , then it gives
me the following error:
" conf:6: missing module argument
can't open "
Then the boot process continues.
I have noticed that one of the modules that I cannot use once it
is booted is the ppp.o (kppp fails). Right now, I have to MANUALLY
insmod slhr.o and then ismod ppp.o for it to work.
I have had the machine running on and off for about 3 months
without a problem and now it is having this problem. Any suggestions
how to fix it ?
I also have noticed that when I try to manually run "depmod -a"
on the command line, it gives me the same error. ( conf:6: module
missing agument) , Also I have tried using "depmod -a 2.2.5-15 " on the
command line and I get the error: "conf:6: module missing argument.
can't open /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/modules.dep").; however, when I do a
" l s-al /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/modules.dep" I can see that the file is
there. (I have even chmod to 777 on it to see if it was reading perm.
problem. Could not get results.
I have not upgraded or built a new kernel nor installed any
major packages (other than ymessenger -yahoo messenger).
I have also noticed that the NFS fails with the error
"nfsvc function not implemented. "
What have I done wrong ?
Thanks for all the help.
