This is a known bugs, probabily you have configured the SCSI support
like a module. Don't do that. In the SCSI howto is clarely stated that
you must have the SCSI compiled statically into the kernel.

This is VEERY strange... are you sure your lilo.conf is

Your parameters are wrong...the f has to be last to specify the file to
use. So something like
tar -xzvf xxx.tar.gz
will do the trick.

Hi!
The problem is in your XF86config. Find a section below:
# **********************************************************************
# Screen sections
# **********************************************************************
# The Colour SVGA server
Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "My Video Card"
Monitor "My Monitor"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
# Omit the Modes line for the "Generic VGA" device
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection
Device should be the one you have a name for it. For modes try these
above. Depth is a color depth (in this case 32 is a true color).
Then reboot your machine and press ctrl alt + to increase resolution and
ctrl alt - to decrease.

Mandrake might employ the same command as RedHat. To make a
bootdisk enter "mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 <version>" where
<version> is the kernel version, e.g., 2.2.14-12

Does anyone know how to set the PATH variable for the cron daemon.
I know to use full path names in the crontab, but one of these
commands (taper) uses stuff in /usr/sbin, which isn't in the cron
PATH.

you can always try deleting (or moving to another place) the modules.dep
file and then run depmod -a again. if there's a problem with your
modules.dep file itself, this should fix it as it builds a new one.
if that doesn't help, you may want to check you /etc/conf.modules or
modules.conf for strange things (check around line 6, maybe ?). this is
just a guess, though, but i won't hurt :-)

I'm trying to transform an old 486DX into a local network server. I have
to install two D-LINK DE220P ISA nics. according to the specs, they are
fully NE2000 compatible, and they've worked in two other computers with
the ne.o driver. but this time I can't get them configured. no matter
which io address or irq i give them, I still get the 'resource busy'
error. I've already tried the same with only one of the cards installed,
same problem. putting it in another isa slot doesn't work, either.
any ideas ?

I have RH6.2 installed on my system. I have downloaded kernel 2.2.16
source code from kernel.org and compiled it. When I use my 2.2.16
kernel however and try to mount a cdrom drive, the system completely
hangs - no switching to another console, no response even to NUM LOCK,
CAPS LOCK etc. Anybody know why this should happen (mounting works
fine under the supplied 2.2.14-50 kernel)

PS - What does the -50 mean in the 2.2.14-50 kernel version supplied

I have a davicom ethernet card on my redhat box. All I did was use
linuxconf to tell it what kernel module to use to activate eth0. I typed in
dmfe and linuxconf wrote "alias eth0 dmfe" in my conf.modules. Now when I
start my redhat 6.2 box, the eth0 comes right up each time.
I imagine if you travel to /lib/modules/2.2.x/net (replace x with your
kernel number), you will see a dmfe.o module which resides there. You could
also add the command linuxconf did for me and edit the ifcfg-etho file in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and you would get the right Ip, netmask, etc
each time.

Lets say you have installed one of my favorites; Blackbox. You could create
a .xinitrc file in root's home and put in something like "exec blackbox".
Blackbox also does windowmaker dockapps. You could download a few dockapps
and populate those with commands like "sleep 1 && wmCalClock &" to start a
nice dockapp clock application or perhaps one to monitor system stuff like
wmsysmon. The exec blackbox line should be the very last line in the
.xinitrc you create and it should not have a "&" following the entry.

The issue with grub I believe is that lilo sees this as an mbr it cannot
write to. I have seen running lilo fail repeatedly on a drive with grub
installed in the mbr. Grub can boot a system without being installed in the
mbr; but thats another question.
Try getting a bootable dos floppy, put on it fdisk and format.com. Now boot
the dos floppy and try to fdisk /mbr the grub stuff away. You can also edit
the boot record directly and remove it using debug or whatever.
I have seen this method work on some recent work I have done with IBM.

Wrong solution IMHO, instead write a script ``foo'' which does
#!/favorite/shell
PATH=$PATH:/usr/sbin
taper-or-whatever-command
and call foo in crontab instead of taper.
