Could you give us a couple of lines before that, please? You've cut it
off just after the real error that caused the others you've posted. It's
probably just that you haven't installed a C compiler (gcc) or something
like that, though.

Ensure you're using a non-interlaced video mode (assuming your monitor
supports it). I just noticed today that my new RedHat 6.2 installation
decided to use an interlaced video mode on a brand new Sony GS220 monitor
(???). Simply re-running Xconfigurator cleaned things up.

Hope this helps,

Mike.

I usually unpack the kernel sources into
/usr/src/linux-[whatever], compile, and if it works move the
sym-link /usr/src/linux from /usr/src/linux[old-whetever] to
/usr/src/linux-[whetever]. That way your known, working source
tree never gets overwritten yet changing /usr/src/linux to a new
version is as simple as moving the link.

Using SCSI devices in linux is usually just making sure you have
SCSI support available, either in the kernel or as a module.
Hook up the hardware, power up, and the device should be
detected. As far as what device names to use, look in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt:

 9 char SCSI tape devices
                  0 = /dev/st0          First SCSI tape, mode 0

It depends on what Shell (bash, ksh, sh, csh, tcsh,...).

echo $SHELL and post here, then we can help.

No, I have not had this problem (many other ones but not this one). I am
very interested though since one day I may want to do something similar.
Have you changed the LILO conf file and then done an .sbin/lilo to run LILO
and set it? Maybe you could use Loadlin & a batch file.

So I did a full install. Everythings went alright but a can't get
Xwindow to serve me.
As I login as root, didn't try any other user login'in - anyway - I got
this message :

execue failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)

X11TransSocketUNIXConnect:

giving up
xinit : Connection refused (errno 111)
unable to connect to X Server
xinit : No such process (errno3):

end of messages.
Have any clue?
I haven't changed anything so far execpt :

boot with the floppy and login as root. run 'lilo' you should see the
labels being made (linux, dos)

again as root. You will need to edit /etc/inittab (try pico if you are
using console, it's an easy newbie editor) Make only one change in that
file. Change the 5 in the line below to a 3. It will then boot into
runlevel 3 which is console.

I think RH6.0 has XFree v 3.3.5. Mine has 3.3.6; so there may be
differences. I looked in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/README.SiS and there are
some recommend modelines to be use with that card. Was your monitor in the
monitor list, or did you enter your Horiz and Vert sync ranges? Try running
startx -verbose &> startxlog and see what is happening to the modelines if
800x600 is as high as you get. I'm assuming you did Ctrl Alt + to try to
toggle. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/VideoModes.doc might explain that bowing,
although it is a tough read. I don't know the answer on it, but that
document might address the problem. You might get some help from running
xvidtune. Also, do a search at www.deja.com on your card with '*linux* or
*redhat*' in the Newsgroup (do advanced search) No doubt someone has had
this problem before.

Forgive this extremely nebulous question....but....

I recently upgraded to Red Hat 6.2 (from 6.1) on my ADM K6-2/500 (128
Megs of RAM) and noticed that the bootup sequence shows quite a number
of daemons starting up. Being a Linux Novice I just stare at it with
the same level of understanding as a cat has when the owner is screaming
at it to stop scratching the furniture.

I examined the scripts in the /etc/rc.d/init.d/ directory and read the
some of the corresponding man's and although some of the processes seem
necessary, I can't figure out why I need others. If someone could list
all of the possible services that can be brought up at boot up, along
with why you'd need them....just kidding. However, if there is a really
good website geared for Newbies describing what things you need at
bootup, etc., I'd appreciate the location.

Well almost. With RH the command is pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf. This gave
me a dump that detected my card. I tried it but it didn't work. The
address listed was incorrect but the IRQ was right. I let it set the IRQ
then ran linuxconf. Here I put in the IRQ listed and the address that the
card was using in Windows. This worked. Then netcfg let me setup
everything, including the DHCP.

Thanks for the pointer though...

I have rh6.1 running on a system with a Diamond Speedstar A50. This
video card uses the SiS 6326 chipset. I had trouble with text in the
X-terminals. When I added options "no-accel", "no_imageblt"' and
"no_bitblt", the x-terminal trouble was gone. However, after stopping and
starting X again, I had trouble similar to what you are describing.
I commented out option "no_bitblt", and then X worked fine. Different
video cards with the SiS 6326 may need different options. See
http://www.xfree.org/3.3.6.SiS1.html#1 for other options. Following is my
/etc/X11/XF86Config file, Section "Device"

There is no way to accurately and completely answer this question without
knowing all of the modules you use, and which kernel you are upgrading from.
But...

As a general rule, the module names and options will remain the same;
/etc/conf.modules usually doesn't need to be changed; and It is highly unlikely
that you would have to reconfigure your sound card or printer.

Most likely, the only time you will need to make changes is if you are making a
big jump in kernel versions or upgrading (or patching) to a kernel where new
options are available. A good example of this would be the somewhat recent
change to the joystick drivers in the 2.4.0-test kernels.

Of course, if you make certain changes in your kernel configuration, such as
using a new feature that you haven't used before, you may have to do a little
extra configuration.

For what its worth, I'd be willing to bet that you won't need to make any
changes.
