Subject: Can't seem to install into an empty partition on 40MB drive
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 15:11:28 GMT
I bought a 2nd pc (an HP 9680C from ubid) that came with Win98 2nd ed
installed. It works fine (and I have this nice kvm so I can swap
between that and my linux box (from ASL labs) on one monitor, kbd, and
mouse). However, I would like to make the HP a dual boot machine,
just like the Linux box it is supplementing is. (Win98 is fine for
some things, but there are times I want Linux running on both boxes at
the same time.)
So, I repartitioned the HP (with its 40 MB ATA drive) to match the
partitions on the Linux box (with its 9MB SCSI drive), leaving all the
spare space in the extended partition at the end. I figured that
should be safe enough to keep the ext2 partition that I made for Linux
below the 1024 limit.
Then, I took my trusty RH6.1 CD and went to do the installation. It
booted fine (didn't even need the boot floppy). However, when I got
to the step where it looks for partitions on the HD (/hda), it could
not find any (empty?) parititions. (Forgive my lack of memory on this
detail, as I haven't attempted this in about a week.) It had problems
whether I used disk druid or fdisk.
Any suggestions including a FAQ or HOWTO I should read would be
appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
-Chris

I had changed my window management setup to use gnome and now when the
system starts up fvwm does not automatically start.
There are other initialization problems as well, such as the stty
settings for xterm and rxvt is not properly initialized.
can someone tell me where to locate the startup commands for these fvwm
and xterm.
I am running rh6.2

Try this fella's page on scroll mice:
http://www-sop.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/
usually you just add "ZAxisMapping 4 5" to the pointer section in your
"/etc/XF86Config" to give the wheel up/down (mouse buttons 4/5) some
meaning :-) Read the message board there too, it helps a lot!
Guy.

Subject: Newie questions on laptop install
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 17:00:43 GMT
I've been wanting to try Linux for a long time and recently picked up an
old 486 50 Mhz laptop (300 meg HD/12 meg RAM/floppy drive/no CD-Rom). I
was hoping to use it as a Linux machine, especially because of its
reputation with older PC's. I have a CD from Linux Mall of Mandrake 6.0,
which I believe should work with non-Pentiums.
For the record, I'm a longtime PC user, well versed in DOS commands, and
relatively knowledgable when it comes to hardware.
Firstly, any suggestions on how I load the system onto the HD without a
CD drive (I have Laplink)? Would Mandrake be a good distribution for
this type of system or would you recommend another?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks...John

Don't know what you mean by internet services. Anyway, consider upgrading to
the most recent RH release and get the book 'Red Hat Linux Bible', 'cause
you're going to have lots of questions this will guide you through.

If you have the kernel source, and your kernel was built from that
source, then you can re-run the kernel configuration utility and just
use it to inspect the parameters. This isn't the same as inspecting
the actual binary kernel that you running through some method. For
that I usually use the /proc filesystem as Colin suggests, but keep in
mind that some stuff doesn't appear in there until the kernel actually
has to use it; /proc is more of a window into the runnign kernel,
rather than something to examine the binary file you built.
Just cd to /usr/src/linux (at least this is where it is put under
redhat) and do "make xconfig". (There is also make menuconfig which
doesn't use X, I think.) I think in the default redhat setup you have
to be root. Set all the parameters you want, then exit. To install
the new kernel you do "make install". Be warned that as far as I
remember this automatically runs lilo and everything, so if you are
doing some experimental stuff then you might want to copy the current
kernel aside and make a lilo tag such as "linux-orig" so you can get
back into it if the new kernel doesn't work.
Then if you forget what parameters you used, go back and run make
xconfig again and inspect them.

You will have to use a boot floppy which supports your scsi card. Which
distribution are you trying to install? Slackware has different floppies
for different SCSI controllers.

Maybe there's a better way, but I just tried
xmodmap -e "keysym BackSpace = 0x0008"

unresolved symbols are caused by not loading a depended on module before the
one you are having trouble with. for instance, if you tried to run
serial-line-ip before adding the serial modules, then slip would give you an
unresolved symbol error.
try and determine what module needs to be loaded before the one you're
having trouble with. it could be more than one even.

Subject: Re: Slow Modem after 2.0.35 -> 2.2.16 Upgrade
Date: Sun, 10 Sep 2000 14:00:49 -0400
The Why: I have read in various places that without compression you only
need a serial speed as fast as the modem speed. But with modem compression
thrown in the mix, the date rate between the modem and the computer is
faster than the modem speed. The HOWTO's seem to imply that you can get a
"few percent" faster throughput with a better serial port connection. This
is why I wanted to upgrade to get support for the better serial UART.
Didn't try setting the UART manually to 16550A, but I did play around with
the spd_*** settings and the pppd settings. I put "spd_warp" for setserial.
Using 38400 in /etc/ppp/options* gives me a slow connection, using 57600
and 115200 gives me a fast connection, but putting 230400 or 460800 gives me
a slow connection. So I can "fix" the problem by using 115200, but I would
still like to understand what is going on.
Using "spd_warp" is supposed to use 460.8 kbps (supported by UART 16650)
when the application asks for 38.4. But this did not appear to happen. I
have no idea what using "spd_warp" with 115 kbps is giving me. Does maybe
pppd set the serial port settings itself so that there is no relation to
what is set with setserial? If this is true, then maybe pppd is broken with
the 460800 setting??

Also check if plug n play. I had a modem that would work fine after doing a
soft boot from "windoze", but would not work doing a hard boot directly to
linux. Had to boot dos first, set up modem using pnpsetup utility, then use
loadlin to boot linux. Did this automatically with autoexec.bat.

Port forwarding (redirection) is not handled by ipchains it is handled by
a third-party app called ipmasqadm. First, you'll need to have 'ipportfw
masq' support compiled into your kernel (experimental feature). Then, add
the following lines to your firewall script ... ipmasqadm portfw -f
ipmasqadm portfw -a -P tcp -L xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 80 -R yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy 80
The first line flushes any rules in the port forwarding chain and the
second forwards all requestes to port 80 to an internal machine, where
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of your external interface on the
firewall machine and yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy is the internal IP address of tyour
web server.

We use Debian here, so this may not apply to RH but, in file
/etc/X11/window-managers there's a list of available wm's.
The default wm, is placed at the top of the list.
If you want X to start at boot, in file /etc/inittab set;
