Not sure if this helps, but here is a problem I once had. I installed
GNU/Linux on a large harddrive. When I did fdisk I gave me some message
about the large disk maybe having problems with LILO. I installed LILO
and everthing worked fine. Then a few months later, I upgraded the
system and LILO refused to work. What was happening is that as long as
the kernel was in the first 1024 sectors of the disks (which by luck
happened in the first install), I was fine. But after the upgrade, the
kernel must have been stored past that, and LILO would not work. So
that is why a lot of people suggest that you use a small (~16M)
partition at the very first part of the disk and mount as /boot. This
ensures that the kernel will always be before the 1024 cylinder limit
and accessable by LILO. So try to create a small (non-raid) partition
at the very first part of your disk and store the kernel there.

Also your boot=/dev/md1 looks a little strange. I know LILO can be
installed in the master boot record (MBR) by using a device with no
partion number (/dev/hda) or alternately in a partition with the
bootable flag set (/dev/hda1). But I haven't seen this done with a RAID
device. But I've never tried it either.
But you say it worked before, so it must be supported. However, you
might want to try putting LILO in the MBR instead. (BIG Warning:
messing with MBR can cause other OS's you might have installed to stop
working). So be careful.

Huh? I have 256 meg of physical RAM and doing "free -m" at the console
prompt shows I have 258 megs of swap allocated.

Probably in old versions???

I have RedHat too...

You want to use the windows install (no partitioning needed) of MAndrake?

Put in the Mandrake CD under Windows and look for the documentation on the
CD. They should have one on how to set this up.

Or do you really want to do a complete install of Mandrake (i.e. the normal
way to set it up)???

If you install instead rpm-3.0.5-9.6x from updates to RH 6.2 (and there
is also similar update to 5.x systems) then this version knows how to
deal with RPM version 4 packages.

This does not quarantee that will have all libraries required by
your Postgress binaries but you can always recompiled that from sources.

Where does the server hang on bootup? Are you able to complete the
boot process if you use the boot disk created during the install?

Have you considered creating a new ISO image with the 2.2.16-3 kernel?
You could also download a new ISO distro and burn it onto a cdrom.

Another option is setting up Redhat Kickstart with the distrubution on
another server.

A quick work-around is also possible with a boot disk to avoid the
RAID issue until you have the newer kernel installed.

If you don't have a cd burner, you could also do an install direct
from a drive partition by copying the distribution to a partition on
the target boot harddrive.

All of these options are explained on the Redhat Install Support
website. Sometimes it helps to have someone tell you that other
options actually exist.

Hello,
I'm trying to setup a dual processor system with an ultra66 promise
controller. A friend of mine told me I had to put the controller in one
of the slots, boot into my RedHat linux 6.1 installation disk, and
select another terminal to look at /proc/pci. What I get for the
promise controller section is this:

Medium devsel. IRQ 11. Master Capable. Latency=64.
I/O at 0xeff0 [0xeff1].
I/O at 0xefe4 [0xefe5].
I/O at 0xefa8 [0xefa9].
I/O at 0xefe0 [0xefe1].
I/O at 0xef00 [0xef01].

I'm new at this, and he told me to use the RedHat 6.2 bootnet.img (with
promise controller support) and to enter

text ide2=0xeff0,0xefe4

at the boot prompt, taking the addresses from the first two entries
above. I've done this, but whenever I try to boot (with my freshly made
boot disk) after the install is finished, I get a kernel panic, can't
mount root.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope... I'm brand new to this =)
My network layout is this:

ADSL--------eth0[linux_box]
                   |_eth1--------[Win2k]
                   |_eth2--------[Hub]

The reason I have the Win2k box connected directly is so that I can get
full duplex on it as my hub only operates at half duplex.

I had it working with 4.0, but with 4.0.1 I had problems. The only
"trick" I know of is to use the newest agpgart module (v0.99 is the one
I had). The RedHat 2.2.16-3 kernel has it. You can also find a patch
at utah-glx.sourceforge.net. The agpgart module from the Intel support
web site only works with XF3.3.x, as far as I can tell.

To get 3D direct rendering working, you need to have the 2.4 kernel
installed and read the dri.sourceforge.net scribblings. I haven't
dared.

Thanks; I'm flattered. However, I am a newbie myself. The setup that I have
was stumbled upon purely by accident. I accidently placed LILO in the
MBR instead of the root partition. Linux would not boot on my machine with
LILO in the root partition without a boot floppy; The boot floppy that I had
would not allow me to initialize my SCSI card; I could not figure out how to
compile a kernel that provided SCSI support, and get the boot floppy to run
that kernel. This is the combination of errors and ignorance that caused me to
"screw up" my machine to the point where I can run LILO from the MBR, run
Linux, or choose between Win98 and Win2K WITHOUT a boot floppy. Now I have to
go look and see why RedHat advises against putting LILO in the MBR.
I don't know if publishing a web page outlining my foibles would be in the
best interests of the other Linux users...

Well you don't provide much information. First, I'd check your apache
log to see what apache is saying is hte problem and based on the error
message take appropriate action. I haven't used apache in a while so I
can't remember where the log is but you can view the httpd.conf file and
whatever the main directory is for apache should also be the directory
for the logs. Also the user apache runs under will need to have
permission to execute the files. As the file already has 755 for
permissions as long as the owner of the file is the same as who apache
runs under that is fine. And as for the right cgi-bin it should be the
one in /home/httpd/cgi-bin since that is apache's home directory (httpd
is the user home directory) and anything used with apache should go
under /home/httpd.

The /home/httpd/cgi-bin is usually the default one. Check
your Apache configuration file for the one it points to.

No, I wasn't aware of that, but it's what I have immediately available. The
machine only has a WinModem, so I can't easily get files required for a
rebuild/update onto the system, unless of course I could mount the FAT32
partition... :-). That's part of why I'm in this mess.

I'm pretty sure I don't have the kernel sources installed.

In another newsgroup someone suggested I run "lsmod" before and after the
failed mount. Sure enough, vfat is in the module list after, so it does get
loaded.

Done.

I think I'll stick with the re-install option for now. I'm too overwhelmed
as it as.

Thanks,

That depends on how your Linux box is configured, but most likely, you're going
to want to set your workstations to point to the lan NIC on the linux box. Just
a guess, but the linux box will probably handle the routing portion.

Subject: Help installing ethernet card drivers in Linux
Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 22:55:33 +0200

Hi, I would like to install ethernet adapters in my two linux computers.
The drivers for the card do not come with the source code or the kernel
programming material. But, someone wrote the drivers for the card and
suppossedly they work great. They supplied me with the following files:

ibmlana.c
ibmlana.h
ibmlana_patch_2.4.0

How do I install the drivers in my operating system. Do I have to
re-compile the kernel, and if so, how do I get it to use these files to
make the driver?

Also, I see the drivers are for 2.4.0, and I have 2.2.13. Will they work

with my LINUX Slackware 2.2.13?

Thanks (I'm totally clueless about this whole thing)
