Subject: fdisk - changing size of extended partition
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 11:55:39 GMT

I need to take space away from my DOS partition to give Linux room to
grow. I have deleted a logical DOS partition to free up space.
I have been wondering if I could safely use fdisk to reduce the size of
the DOS extended partition and to increase the size of the root
partition. Since I have no means of backing up entire partitions, I am
hoping that I can simply change the ending cylinder of the extended DOS
partition and the beginning cylinder of the root partition.
The table looks like this now:
/dev/hda1 1 65 6 FAT16
/dev/hda2 321 543 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 544 553 82 Linux swap
/dev/hda4 66 320 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 66 129 6 FAT16
/dev/hda6 130 193 6 FAT16
/dev/hda7 194 257 6 FAT16

Since I created a space between 258 amd 320, I thought I might be able
to change the ending cylinder of /dev/hda4 (extended DOS) to 257, and
the beginning cylinder of /dev/hda2 (Linux) to 258.

It sounds too easy, so I thought I had better check in for some more
knowledgeable opinions before I make a mess!
        Thanks

Subject: booting from scsi
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 12:13:24 GMT

My current set up is Redhat booting from hda3 via floppy disk, this
allows my good missus to boot up into windoze without the hassle of
boot managers and the likes
The problem I am having now is I have been given a scsi card and 1Gb HD.
Yipee I thought, I then installed Linux Storm 2000 onto my scsi drive
<sda1> (I believe) and everything went fine until I tried to boot from
scsi. The message "no bootable devices found" (or something like that)
came up and that was it.
Q. How do I get the scsi HD to boot?
Q. Alternatively, how do I go about creating a floppy to boot to the
scsi drive (just like my trusty redhat floppy)

I experienced the same effect, with a GeForce 256 and SuSE 7.0 (Kernel
2.2.16 and the latest available updates for GeForce cards from the SuSE
ftp-site.
After a few seconds my workstation got locked up totally, not even a
telnet from another
PC was possible any more. No ctrl-alt-backspace, no nothing. I could
only hardware-reset the machine.
Nevertheless, I use reiserfs and only one big partition, so the reboot
time after is quite short.

OK then... Let's be fair:

I've used .92, .93, and .94 on my TNT2. Within seconds of starting most
3D apps, my computer has completely locked up on me. Couldn't even ping
it. Forced a hard reboot. Spent 30 minutes fsck my hard disk. Once,
my
home directory was so screwed I had to restore everything from tape.
Now,
perhaps nVidia isn't responsible for the fact that my home partition was
screwed up, but their drivers *did* cause the lock up that led to
hitting
the power switch.

Let's continue to be fair:

I sent a couple messages to the e-mail address nVidia supplied,
describing
the situation. I never got a response. Not *one* response to that
problem. So, I visit the irc channel for them. Although there were
plenty of nice people there, *none* of them were helpful.

So, in the grand tradition of being fair, nVidia blows me off as
customer
so I blow them of as a manufacturer. They've lost a customer. And
until
they change their attitude, I will *not* be coming back.

Hi,

I'm attempting to install the ALSA sound drivers in RH6.2 with little
success.
The drivers have compiled OK but when attempting to load the driver using
/sbin/modprobe snd-card-cs461x (I have a Crystal CS461x) , I get a message
stating that the device is busy.

What is happening and how can I resolve it?

TIA

It pops up with that error message.

Try using the text based program xf86config. I know you can choose generic
with that program and you can put your actual monitor horiz and vert ranges
in. Be sure to have it set the link for you.

I installed xcdroast v0.96ex (rpm package from redhat server) on my redhat
Linux 6.2.
After I start xcdroast and do the setup, I select the button "Copy Data-CD".
Now the next screen appears for 1 seconds and xcdroast exists itself without
any message.
Also everytime I start xcdroast, it says, that something has changed on the
SCSI bus, but there wasn't something changed.

Knows anyone where I can find some add. information about my problems with
xcdroast or knows anyone such problems?

I use
TEAC CD-R56S CD-Writer
PLEXTOR PX-40TS CD-Drive
Adaptec AHA2940UW SCSI-Adapter

Thanks for help

Since you have tried using the docs and have the current stable XFree86, I
would recommend that you get some data using your setup with

startx -verbose &>startxlog

Then go to www.xfree86.org and submit the problem. They have a form there
someplace. I have used it a couple of times and got good response. But it
is very important to fill out the form and include that log. It is also
important to be using the newest version of XFree86. In this case you need
not be using 4.0.1. If you describe the problem and submit what they ask
for, which may also inclued /etc/X11/XF86Config, you will likely hear from
someone there.

I would set it to:

/dev/hda3 swap swap defaults 0 0

with 'none' placed where you do, you tell the kernel, that it shall use
this swap-type partition for nothing.

Well, that should be done automatically by the entries
in modules.conf, but even with the parameters directly
passed to modprobe, it does not work... :-(

No sndconfig, but there is a possibility in their new install tool

fdisk (the DOS-one as well as the Linux-one) do not have the ability to
change sizes on partitions. If you are going to use them, you will have to
delete the partition and create a bigger one.

As an alternative, you could use partitionmagic or some other
resize-enabled partition program.

Hello linux pros. Today, I finally finished my install of Mandrake
7.1. Now I haven't had a chance to test everything out just yet, but
one problem I notice right off the bat is the user accounts are all
f'd up.

Now the root account seems to be working fine. Granted it can't pine
either, but that's probably cause pine isn't installed yet. Do I
install pine using an RPM?

Anyways when I log on as a user I get a string of error messages as
follows:

Last login: Tue Sep 12 09:02:43 on tty1
id: Command not found.
id: Command not found.
id: Command not found.
[: Command not found.
test: Command not found.

Then comes the login prompt. However, virtually no commands work on
user accounts. The only commands that seem to work are 'cd' and
'logout'. ls, pwd, pine, ifconfig, su, etc, etc none of them work.

So what would cause my root account to work but not my user accounts?

Thanks people,
Buschman

In the docs you may find a statement telling that you must enable sound
support in the kernel without activating a specific card. Did you do that ?

Hi,
you need the server for the 3DLabs chipset (it should come as part
of your Linux distribution). Use SuperProbe to see if the chipset
and amount of memory are correctly probed. If so, then the Device
section in your XF86Config file can be pretty short. If you're
still stuck, E-mail me and I'll send you a copy of the XF86Config
file I used with that card.

Cheers,

Have you updated lilo typing "lilo" at the prompt after added the line
to the lilo.conf ?

Try issuing:

/bin/echo $PATH

in root and non-root and see what the results are. Sounds like the
$PATH, which is a list of directories where the shell searches for
commands when you don;t give a complete path, is messed up.

Sounds like users' PATH environment variables aren't getting set up. As
one of the users, do a /bin/echo $PATH and see what it says.

It should be possible to mount / from the 3. HD, but
having /boot on the 3. HD does not work with all BIOSes.

The location of /boot is critical because at boot time
the files must be loaded using bios calls. If /boot is
part of the root filesystem that must be located in a
place from where you can boot. If /boot is mounted as
a separate filesystem the root filesystem can be located
anywhere on any harddisk. (as long as the driver is in
the kernel.)

Accessing the first 512MB of the first harddisk would
normally always work, depending on BIOS version and
LILO version the rest of the harddiskspace may cause
trouble.

Subject: Stumped. Any ideas?
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 08:41:01 -0500

System:
HP Pavilion 8240 P266 32MB RAM 3GB HD
NetworkEverywhere NC100 card
Internet access (DSL) configured through Linksys router

O/S
COL 2.3 kernel 2.2.17 (just upgraded from 2.2.10) installed on /dev/hda1
Swap file on dev/hda2
No other O/S

Background:
Installed NIC but old kernel version did not like tulip and pci-scan modules
Upgraded kernel to 2.2.17 and then installed the netdriver package, courtesy
of Donald Becker/Scyld
Everything worked fine for a few minutes and then system crashed while
browsing
Only way to reboot system was to power off and on
Worked fine for a few minutes and crashed again while browsing
Even power cycle did not help
Booted using emergency diskette and commented out the above driver entries
in /etc/modules/default
System booted properly
Swap file was not being recognized so made the recommended changes
Uninstalled netdriver package and re-installed
Re-configured eth0
System worked fine for a few minutes and crashed again even though I was
using terminal-based ftp

Given that the system crashes a few minutes after boot, are there any
overheating issues, memory overruns, or something else perhaps that is being
exceeded that shouldn't be?

Subject: How to turn on DTR ?
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 08:49:49 -0500

I just upgraded to redhat 6.2 and now when I open the serial
port(/dev/ttyS0), the DTR line is not turned on. Can anyone help me
determine what options has to be set to enable DTR line on the serial
port.

On 5.2 the DTR was turned on when the port was opened. Can this be
fixed or is there a special options required to enable the DTR by
default?

Thanks
Marty

I have a 13gb disk with a single primary of 13gb which is "C:". I ran fips and shrank
to a minimum. Installed Linux BUT dos was
no longer bootable. Most of the systems had win98 in it.
