it means u did not compile something into you're kernel.. an option(s) that
u maybe have overlooked.

i don't know what it is off the top of my head.

Does this mean you only typed 'make xconfig', changed the cpu and then
recompiled the kernel? Well, that is not enough, because the default
configuration _is not_ the configuration shipped with the RH linux. If
you want a usable kernel you must go through all points of the
configuration and adjust them to your system. If you also use modules,
make sure to do the 'make modules_install' after you compiled them.
btw, these 'unresolved symbols' also occur if you did not compile for
example autofs as module and the file is still in the modules
directory...

I hope I could help you

try using "linear" in the lilo.conf

Some hard drives have geometry issues which can be resolved using
linear. The "LI" usually indicates a geometry problem.

I had a similar problem a few months ago. What fixed it for me was to place
it lower in the file. Someone suggested that something else needed to load
first, but I forget the details.

BTW, I don't need this anymore...I updated my BIOS. Maybe you should look
for a similar fix.

hi,

I am trying to install Linux RedHat 6.2 on a partition in a hard disk.
The problem is that on reboot,LILO hangs. Any help would be appreciated

I think its something to do with the fact that teh # of cylinder is 4462

When I run fdisk, it gives me this message that the # of cylinders is
4462 which is bigger than
1024 which is going to cause a problem with LILO.

Here are the details:
I have installed Red Hat 6.2. I also have a WinME and Win2000 installed
on the first two partitions and installed Linux on the third partition.
I actually created a / , /swap, /boot and
/usr partition for Linux. Linux starts from cylinder # 2551 onwards.
Everything before that is being used by the WinME and Win2000 systems.

thanks

Hi,
Did you also re-run lilo after you edited lilo.conf? Just editing the
lilo.conf file by itself will not change anything.

There is a mini-how on the subject at:

Being that you've installed lilo to your MBR you'll need to run lilo again

setup NT loader to boot all OS's ...

Hello, I belong to a service bureau, which has been providing
Netware and WinNT services for quite some time. At last, we
can move onto linux now that Novell has provided NDS for that
OS, which greatly simplifies our administration of these services. So,
we need some documentation about high

clustering and redundancy. If you know of such systems, my

...and once you get the system to recognize your drive, just
insert a tape into the unit and try this command:

        mt -f /dev/rst0 status
                   ^^^^
           or whatever is reported
to be the assigned dev name

"mt" is a nice tool for doing things with SCSI tapes. Other
commands you can use besides "status" are "offline" (unload)
"erase", "fsf" (file-skip-forward), "rewind".

Try "man mt" for a more complete synopsis.

I don't know about fdisk, but this is exactly what fips is designed to do.
The idea is to defragment your partition to move everything to the start,
then slice a piece off the end. Then use fdisk or cfdisk to make the empty
space into a partition.

Read the documentation, back up, defragment, then go for it. I've done it
several times with no trouble.

Date: 13 Sep 2000 01:10:24 GMT

Firstly thanks for replies to my previous post. However I wasn't able to
fix the issue so here goes again.

I've set up a dial-in server using Redhat 6.2 for some of our branches to
connect.

At the moment the serial port is running at 38400 as I haven't been able to
get it going faster.

Modem is a late USR 56k which is currently set with port speed of 115200.

I've followed the instructions I've found so far, which is to change the
mgetty line in inittab to 115200, then done a setserial spd_vhi; which
results in me not being able to connect any more. Set it all back to 38400
and spd_normal and it works ok.

Any ideas if there's any other settings that need to be done.

Thanks much.

OK, I'm on as root so home is 'root', right? In root I find a hidden file,
.bash_profile. I add:

export PATH=$PATH:/games

I save it. I log off. I restart KDE as root (I'm the only user so root is
my only choice). I open console and type:

echo $PATH

I look at the path and there is no change. I've added the same (and similar
versions as found on the Linux Newbie instructions site) statement to
.bashrc, /etc/profile, /etc/anacrontab, /etc/bashrc, and
/etc/rc.d/init.d/functions. NONE of these files has any influence on my
path!!! Is the problem with being on as root or is there still a file I
haven't butchered?

I have a feeling he means configuring RH5.1 to get online. I'm running
same on this machine and it wasn't real clear but a guy from my ISP set me
up with a script file and I've modified it and created another to handle
multiple accounts in a crude way -- I'm just learning Bourne, Linux, etc.

Anyway, any idea how useful such a pair of scripts might be? Provided I
obtain permission from the author of the original script for me to supply
his original, I'll make available it and my very humble addition for the
following fee: If you can improve on it let me in on the code and how you
did it so I can learn too! (Please!)

Ok so my question is why he wouldn't just use the cisco 675 to do his work fro
him and not use the linux "router" ?
Do any of you fellows giving advice even know anything about this neat little
box ?

I am a complete novice ( IMHO ) and I have my small home network setup using the
cisco 675
and just connect it to my hub , then the other 4 linux pc's to the hub and setup
the dhcp server on the cisco
box and build a nat table in the cisco box for any incoming port calls I might
need ( like ssh into my boxes and ftp as well ) , now granted I don't have a
permanent IP with my ISP but it has stayed the same for the last 6 months and
unfortunately I don't have a registered domain name

Now I do have a question to those that may know , how do I setup my pc's so that
they can access one of the pc's to send print jobs to , and also I can't have
anything other than "localhost.localdomain" on all the boxes or when I start X
it complains that it can't resolve the servername :^P
and other related problems because of the lack of a resolveable domain name , so
am I doing something wrong here or missing something ?

So , I must say I like what the cisco box is doing for me (it does -so- much in
a tiny package ) as it was a real no brainer for me to get my DSL setup going
for my linux boxes, but I am not all there on what to do to make it work better
for me given the stuff above .....

Any takers ?
