I had neglected to mkswap when I had recreated the partition, which I
have done, and things are working fine. On the off chance there are any
gurus watching the antics of the mortals in here, a more informative
error message than "invalid argument" or the entirely misleading "fs
type swap not supported by kernel" might have been helpful here. Even,
dare I suggest, a partitioning utility that would prompt for and handle
the formatting? Sometimes I wonder if somebody is deliberately keeping
even simple things in Linux obscure enough to drive non-programmers
away.
Anyway, thanks moffe for your suggestion and I'm off to try and impose
some order on my hopelessly buggy window management (enlightment/Gnome -
pretty look, but dreadful instability). Maybe if I can figure out all
the buried files necessary to try unhang enlightment and get Icewm
running....

Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 20:42:08 +0200

Maybe this is kinda stupid, but I have the followin question:
A few days ago, I updated (or at least, tried to) update libc.so.5 and
glibc using the .tga-files of the newest Slackware-distribution (since
the system is slackware). So I copied the files , untarred them and run
ldconfig. Unfortunately, the was a X session running while I did this.
So when I swithed back to rthe X session, X died and crashed my machine.
My problem now is that I can't boot anymore because initd won't start. I
suspect that the libc.so.5 wasnt properly updated. But even setting new
links using a rescue disk won't solve the problem. Do I have to
reinstall? Or is there another way of getting the linux box running?
                                                        TIA

Jens

Add ``noauth'' to /etc/ppp/options. The default is to require the host
to authenticate itself, and you need to turn that off.

Solved. I got sick of messing with it so I just compiled DAC960 and my SCSI
support ito ther kernel.... Who knows why it does not work, not work
wasting time with it.

Thx. I tried that. Its parent was "bash" which I could kill. But the
tar task is still there (no parents). Output of ps -AH | grep tar

Okay, I'm relatively new to this. I've installed linux before, but
usually through the guided process. This time I have a box with a
limited space and need to do a custom install and manually select
packages, it's a RH 6.2 and I'd like it to be a network and web server,
running PHP and MySQL, email,... the basics. There are packages that
are obvious but I'm not sure what all I need, don't want to leave
anything out.

thanks,

I got all of the Solaris libraries installed. According to the
README, I just need to run "insmod solaris". But it did not come with
such module. Do I have to rebuild the kernel to obtain such module?
If anyone can have some pointer to reading materials, I appreciate
very much. Thanks.

It's a postscript printer, you don't need anything special for it. You
can send it PS directly, and it will print it. I use one as a network
printer - you can use its "raw" queue which understands PS.

I have noticed that in /etc/conf.modules it lists my driver
incorrectly.

It says:

alias eth0 3c59x
alias eth1 3c59x

However both cards are 3Com 3c905b-tx NIC's. I remember when I had
6.1 installed with a single 3c905b-tx, it did the same thing. It
detected and installed a 3c59x driver however with 6.1 it worked fine.
Is there a 3c90x driver and if so how do I change it????

thanks for your help.

I am trying to install openssh for Linux and cannot complete the RPM
install. When I install the RPMs, I get an

'rpmlib (version discrepency) <= 3.0.3 - ...'
or something like this. I am not sure what rpmlib means, is it the
rpmbuild, or somthing else?

If anyone has successfully installed openssh 2.2.0 I would like to know if
you have had any trouble like this.

Subject: HELP: My partition table got roached.

Hello,

Don't know how it happened, but my partition table got slammed.

I'm running a RH 6.0 system with 2.2.12 kernel.

I had a number of partitions setup roughly like this:

/dev/sda1 / 1GB
/dev/sda2 swap
/dev/sda3 /home 8GB
/dev/sda4 /usr 8GB

I have an 18G drive, and my root partition was 1 gig,
with the rest of the drive carved up evenly between home
and usr. Now, my home and user partitions are gone
and I'm left with an intact root partition and another
"Extended" partition which has the rest of the disk.

I can boot the system because my root partition is happy,
but now all my files that lived under /home are stranded.

So now it looks like:

/dev/sda1 / 1GB
/dev/sda2 16GB

So... is there any way to get back my partitions?
I used that RH disk druid tool to set up my partitions.

Does anyone know if that tool makes a backup of my partition settings
anywhere?

Is there a backup partition table stored anywhere on disk?

Any ideas I can try before I go and reinstall thus losing
my data.

Thanks
Mike

On RPM-based distributions, probably glibc-devel.

Download the tar.gz version instead. If you have your C compiler installed
(RH does it by default), then you just become root and do

tar -xzf filenameofpackage.tar.gz
cd filenameofpackage
./configure
make
make install

and then become your normal user self again. It actually is pretty
fast and easy in most cases.
