Subject: LILO problem with KT7-RAID
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Julian Lighton)
Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2000 06:56:43 GMT
I've been trying to boot both Windows 98 and Linux (Red Hat 6.2) on an
Abit KT7-RAID. (RAID is not in use, though.) The Windows disk was
booting fine, until I moved the other disk from the raid controller to
the normal one, installed Linux, patched it so it can use the
Highpoint controller, and put LILO on it. It will boot to Windows if
the Linux disk is disconnected, and I can mount the Windows disk from
within Linux. However, when LILO tries to boot Windows, it fails with
"Error 0x00". (This is true of both the LILO that came with RedHat
6.2, and with 21.5.1.)
(Current setup is: hda - Linux + LILO, hdc - CD, hdd - Zip drive,
hde - windows. hda used to be hdg (presumably).)
Here is my lilo.conf. (I've tinkered with some settings, such as
linear, but nothing seems to have an effect.)

I am not very sure but when u use -p option, it expects an encrypted
passwd, not a passwd in plain text. So what has probably happened is
that the passwd that u specified in the command has been accepted as the
encypted one. Just remove the passwd from /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow and
reset.

Well, configuring it is a thing you always need to do with a network card
:-(
Buy a card with a rtl8139 chipset for a decent 100mbit home network or a
NE2000 compatible one for a slower network (10mbit)
configuring *can* be simple if you can use your distibution tools for that
( something like linuxconf or Yast or Install etc..)
try looking at the manpages of ifconfig and read the net-3 howto for running
a basic network.

Very much so. If it just accepted what you typed and inserted it to the
passwd database, you now have (maybe even in /etc/passwd, world
readable!) you *password* in the field where and encrypted one should
be. I doubt you'll find a password that will be that when encrypted, ie
you've locked the account.
Check the passwd file. If it's a public computer, don't EVER use that
password again as it may have been compromised if anyoned happened to
look in.

Subject: RH 6.2 - Disk Drive Replacment
Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2000 11:34:23 GMT
Hello,
I have been seeing these messages in my log files for a few days and I think
one of my drive is beginning to fail.
I am running RH 6.2 on a system with two IDE drives (1.6 & 1.2GB). I have a
single drive (7GB) to replace the two existing drives.
I figure, at worse I will have to remove the two old drives and install the
new drive and re-install RH 6.2.
Is there a simpler way to replace the drives and allow me to add the extra
drive space to the existing filesystems without re-install RH 6.2
Any advise would be greatly appreciated
Vinson

Subject: ppp dial-on-demand?? ? ?
hello one and all,
i have redhat linux 6.2 on one computer with a modem and ppp0 working
and running. so i can www around once connected. i use "ifup ppp0" and
"ifdown ppp0" to manually connect and disconnect. i have two windows
computers connected via 100BaseTX to the linux box, where eth0 is the
ethernet card on the linux box. the windows computers simply have the
default gateway set to 192.168.0.1, which is the ip of the linux box.
so the linux box has the only modem and is fully configured for ppp
dialout, with two internal windows computers connected to it via
100BaseTX at IPs 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, where the default gateway
is the linux 192.168.0.1 box.
all of the computers can browse the web fine once i manually turn ppp0
on and it is connected. i would like the linux box, ppp0, to
automatically dialout if an external IP request is requested of the
linux box, either from itself or the other two windows computers. i
believe that this is called dial-on-demand, but i am not sure. so once
the first external request is received the ppp0 will automatically
connect and external access is then running. i also want that if any
and all external requests are silent for say 5 minutes, the ppp0 will
automatically shutdown. once shutdown, it will again wait for another
external request and dialout automatically. does this make sense?
anyone who can offer assistance and/or has actually configured their
little network to run like this, please respond and give me advise.
thank you in advance and have a nice day.

Do you know how I can get it working again?

Hi,
I have the following problem. When I quit the X Server or use
CTRL-ALT-F1 etc. to go
to the console, the monitor sometimes flickers continously as if a wrong
screen mode had
been selected (and not standard VGA). This happens NOT every time I
change to the console,
however.
I am running the SVGA Server (3.3.6) with a 16 MB Voodoo Banshee card

Many thanks for your help,

That's how it's supposed to =).
It's also trivial to remove the :0 display from *dm's configs so you can
still use startx if for some reason (lighten server load, free mem etc)
you wish not to run X all the time.
