hmmm,

the bios restriction is really no problem for linux once it is running. it
will only bother you when linux boots. the linux boot partition has to
reside below cylinder 1024 if i'm not mistaken. all other partitions (swap,
root, etc.) can live anywhere you like on the disk.

i have redhat myself (6.0) and it didn't force me to do anything. redhat
uses diskdruid to let you choose the partitions where you want to install
your stuff. just make sure you create your /boot partition below cylinder
1024 of your harddisk.

maybe you should try and get some support on diskdruid or read it's manual
thouroughly.

it would be interesting to see the error message you get though.

good luck

If nothing else, the locations of your partitions changed. I don't know
about the system commander, but with lilo you'd have to rerun /sbin/lilo to
make it find the new partitions. Have you done the analogous thing for
system commander?

Failing that, have you run fdisk /dev/hdb from a boot disk? It will show
you the partition table.

Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 10:04:16 GMT

I recently installed Debian 2.2 and am having problems with Netscape.
According to dselect Netscape is installed on my system and indeed
netscape-server (or something like that) is installed. That's a utility that
decides whether to start netscape or to use the curretly running copy.
However, netscape itself doesn't appear to be present (yes, I did run a find on
the entire installation). Has anyone else here installed the new Debian, did
they have similar problems and if so have they solved them?
Thanks,
Paul.

Subject: samba errors?
Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2000 11:14:35 GMT

Hi all,
I have a linux box serving several windoze machines with samba. The windoze
boxes are using network login and everything seems to be working fine. Problem
is in my /var/log/messages, every time someone logs in, I get the following
message:

Sep 18 21:13:52 dot PAM_pwdb[2990]: authentication failure; (uid=0) -> jordan
for samba service

(Of course the name corresponds to the user, but the uid is always 0)

I also see that it takes a while (~3-4 sec) for my windoze boxes to see the
linux partitions and printers that are shared, where it takes no time at all for
them to see the other windoze shared partitions.

I have another clue (perhaps)
There are usually two messages when someone logs in or out (sometimes there
are four.)

Are these related? How do I fix them?

Thanks,
Jordan

When i try to login into my Linux box, via telnet or the console, I

and it will not let me login. I can ftp to the server and also use

I am trying to find the equvilint file on another box but can't find

Did you try to compile the OSS-Driver into the Kernel, not as module? I had

worked.............

The most Distributions have bootable CDroms. For Example debian, suse or
redhat. Get one of them (Debian is completly free) and boot from CD. You will
not need any working OS like Win98 on your Harddrive.

I had the same problem. What I did was unselect all the pcmia options when
configuring the kernel. I use 'make xconfig' to configure the kernel. Try
this and see if it works.

If we can show that it locks up on some machines with the drivers, but doesn't
lock up on the same machine *without* the drivers, then it's probably something
to do with the drivers.

Subject: Re: Increase memory

This is a common problem mentioned often in the newsgroups.
There are 2 solutions:
1) Amend the BIOS settings. On my K7M Athlon board with AMI BIOS it is
        ACPI Aware O/S
    Set this to No to get Linux to use > 64M memory

2) Add a line to /etc/lilo.conf (assuming you use lilo) in the section for
the Linux you     are loading
        append="mem=128M"
    and re-run lilo to update its tables
    Be careful here - lilo takes what you type here as true. If you say you
have
    more than you actually have you will get strange crashes.

Good luck

Would anyone have an idea how to solve the problem please?
Thanks in advance

To allow socks in :

SOCKS_PORT="1080"
EXTERNAL_INTERFACE="eth0" maybe this should be your internal interface....
ANYWHERE="any/0"
IPADDR="your.ip.address.of.your.socks.interface"

# SOCKS: establishing a connection
ipchains -A output -i $EXTERNAL_INTERFACE -p tcp -y \
         -s $IPADDR \
         -d $ANYWHERE $SOCKS_PORT -j ACCEPT -l

# SOCKS incoming connection
ipchains -A input -i $EXTERNAL_INTERFACE -p tcp -y \
         -d $IPADDR $SOCKS_PORT -j ACCEPT

What exactly are the problems you're expiriencing with lilo?
I ask this because of in what you told, I fail to see a problem.

So if what I propose next is the same as you tried, report back with a
more specified problem.

You're partition-table should look like:
/dev/hda1 (win98)
/dev/hda2 (win2000)
/dev/hda3 (/boot)
/dev/hda4 (ext'd) -> containing /dev/hda5 (exchange partition)
                                /dev/hda6 /
                                /dev/hda7 /var
                                /dev/hda8 /usr
                                /dev/hda9 /root

Oh yeah, I'd create a swap partition too if I were you

And I/m not sure why you insist on having linux in the MBR, it'll be
fine in /dev/hda3 where it cannot be overwritten by a win98/2000
reinstall.
>From there you can boot both other OS's too, if you'd like that.
You may also want to read a howto on partitioning.
