It might not be a failure but it's certainly a bug. Why don't they have the
sense to bring up pcmcia before trying to configure eth0, thus saving us
all a bit of grief...

Correct me if I'm wrong , but DHCP didn't work. Every time that I tried to use
this program the machine would hang trying to find a address. It wasn't unitl I
used a fixed address that I got the thing working.

So i guess I really don't need DHCP as long as I have the rc.inet1 and
resolv.conf files configured correctly.

Subject: Console text capture (to review kernal compile error messages)?

Hi all,

I have been trying unsucessfully to recompile my kernal. After I run
"make mrproper", "make xconfig", "make dep", "make clean" then "make
bzImage" it runs throught all the various makes and after about 2-3
minutes end with an error 127 and error 2. I would like to submit this
error message to the group in a request for help. But how do I copy
this console message to a text file so I can review and copy off to a
message?

Is there a screen text log file?

I hunted the web and found what I thought I needed at
http://www.linuxhq.com/kernel/v2.0/patch/patch-2.0.31/linux_drivers_scsi_README.ncr53c8xx.html
HBA is Symbios SYM8751SP that came with 4.11 BIOS and now has 4.17.
Disconnect is not one of the setup options. I tried both

        lilo: linux ncr53c8xx=tags:0,disc:n &
        lilo: linux ncr53c8xx=tags:0,disc:n.

Both methods god rid of all the package selection errors except one,
"missing basesystem package". Shifting to console 3 the message is:

        unknown package 'basesystem'
warning: missing basesystem package at /usr/bin/perl-install/install_any.pm
line 278

In console 4 the screen ends with three pair of duplicated CD-ROM I/O
errors, sectors 68372, 19756, & 20036. I retried with version 7.0 instead
and get basically the same problem, but the sectors aren't all paired and
there are more of them, 49348, 48944, 48756, 48792, 48940, and the
script error reads "missing some base packages . . . at line 147". My 7.0
CD is a shrink-wrapped GPL purchase, the second, as I had the same
trouble with the first, which got lost in the mail on return to vendor. My
7.1 my brother made by copying from a shrink-wrapped GPL purchase.

Don't know enough about windoze stupid file system to try that, even if I
had one big enough to have that much freespace. Oops, found one. Copied
the whole thing there. But, all the filenames are 8.3.

Shouldn't need windoze to install Linux. Any other ideas anyone?

While 3Com and Intel cards are certainly good, and should be detected by
Red Hat, you may notice that they are kind of pricey. ($50-$100). Their
main advantage is in high-volume networks, where they generally perform
better than other brands.

However, if your network doesn't fall into the 'high-volume,
high-pressure' category, then just about any $15-$30 10/100 NIC will be
MORE than you need.

Netgear makes good networking hardware, and their FA 310TX 10/100 NIC
usually retails for around $25. I have this card, and I'm using RH 6.2,
and it auto-detects fine. However, you must get the 310 model (not 311
or 312, as these don't work with the standard 'tulip' module that comes
with Linux). I used to recommend Linksys NIC's (which fall into the same
price range) but their newer cards have the same problem with the
standard tulip module (and Linksys doesn't label their cards with model
numbers...)

Is there something that says, "Halt on errors..... [all, keyboard, none]"
If there is, set this to 'none'. Also, I've seen instructions around on how
to make a loopback/dummy keyboard cable (basically a re-wired PS/2 cable
with no keyboard attached); I don't have a url for it though...

Consider reviewing the following website:

http://www.v-com.com/

I have dl'd System Commander 2000 to my system. Originally I had
intended upgrading the PC I'm using, but now I'm building a new one from
scratch, starting wit ha 40Gb Maxtor HD with a view to partitioning it
somilarly to your own.

I am currently running Win95 OSR2. No probs at boot and it allows you
enter DOS or Win95. I think anti-virus software monitoring boot must be
disabled for multi-boot with multiple OSes.

I think you can dl the help.pdf file separately from the website to
allow you to review the product.

Partition Magic is probably best for partitioning HDs

Norton Ghost is probably best for copying a disc image to your new
disc/partition.

Nope, I havent' done all this yet.

Dose are De Plans!

Hi :-)

As I tried to install Mandrake 7.1 today myself via ftp I had some problem, searching
to solve
mine I found the solution to _yours_.:-) Ok if you have plenty of space; copy the CD
onto your
WinXX. then get a image called hd.img, you need to transfer it to to a floppy.
(rawwritewin. exec
works in Windows you can get it at Mandrake or maybe its on the CD/ROM it might be
that you have
all you need there... ) with this floppy you could install from one Partition to the
other ( at
least that's what the readme tells me...)

You need to change in /etc/intiab shutdown -r to shutdown -h you might to
look
for kbrequest

for more info:-)

http://ldp.atnet.at/HOWTO/Keyboard-and-Console-HOWTO-15.html

15. Examples of use of loadkeys and xmodmap

Switching Caps Lock and Control on the keyboard (assuming you use keymaps
0-15;
check with
dumpkeys | head -1)

             % loadkeys
             keymaps 0-15
             keycode 58 = Control
             keycode 29 = Caps_Lock
             %

Switching them under X only:

             % xmodmap .xmodmaprc

where .xmodmaprc contains lines

             remove Lock = Caps_Lock
             remove Control = Control_L
             keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock
             keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
             add Lock = Caps_Lock
             add Control = Control_L

What is this about the key numbering? Backspace is 14 under Linux, 22 under
X?
Well, the
numbering can best be regarded as arbitrary; the Linux number of a key can
be
found using
showkey(1), and the X number using xev(1). Often the X number will be 8
more
than the Linux
number.

Something else people like to change are the bindings of the function keys.
Suppose that you want to
make F12 produce the string "emacs ". Then

             % loadkeys
             keycode 88 = F12
             string F12 = "emacs "
             %

will do this. More explicitly, the procedure is like this: (i) find the
keycodes of the keys to be
remapped, using showkey(1). (ii) save the current keymap, make a copy and
edit
that:

             % dumpkeys > my_keymap
             % cp my_keymap trial_keymap
             % emacs trial_keymap
             % loadkeys trial_keymap
             %

The format of the table can be guessed by looking at the output of
dumpkeys,
and is documented in
keytables(5). When the new keymap functions as desired, you can put an
invocation

             loadkeys my_new_keymap

in /etc/rc.local or so, to execute it automatically at boot-up. Note that
changing modifier keys is
tricky, and a newbie can easily get into a situation only an expert can get
out
of.

The default directory for keymaps is /usr/lib/kbd/keytables. The default
extension for
keymaps is .map. Thus, loadkeys uk would probably load
/usr/lib/kbd/keytables/uk.map.

(On my machine) /dev/console is a symbolic link to /dev/tty0, and the
kernel
regards
/dev/tty0 as a synonym for the current VT. XFree86 1.3 changes the owner of
/dev/tty0, but
does not reset this after finishing. Thus, loadkeys or dumpkeys might fail
because someone else
owns /dev/tty0; in such a case you might run X first. Note that you cannot
change keyboard
mappings when not at the console (and not superuser).

Nope, haven't tried it yet, but I bet you will have problems
if MSWin AND linux try using the same swap file!
Err... lets see... linux boots and mkswap inits the
swapfile and swapon starts linux writing to it... THEN
vmware starts MSWin, which re-init's the swapfile that
linux is currently writing on.... bad, bad mojo...
If you'r lucky windows will gracefully fail (Ha!) to open the
locked swapfile and run with no swap (not good), or
it will blue screen on you...

That would be a prime example of a good time to use the
swapoff command e.g...
- boot linux using mkswap & swapon
- run "/sbin/swapoff /path/to/MS/swap.file" to tell linux to
   leave MSWin swap file alone
- run VMWare/MSWin (re-init's swapfile for MSWin)
- exit MSWin/VMWare
- run "/sbin/mkswap /path/to/MS/swap.file" to re-init swap
   file for linux
- run "/sbin/swapon /path/to/MS/swap.file" to tell linux to
start using MSWin swap file agian.

I had the same problem, I needed to add monitor resolutions to the
config file, i picked them from the old config file section screen.
I found some information at www.nvidia.com.

TCP Wrappers tries various methods to make sure that your machine actually
is who it says it is before allowing a connection:

1) ip to name resolution - tcpd looks for a PTR record from it's DNS
servers.

2)name to ip resolution - tcpd then looks for the A record for that name,
looking for a match with the results of 1)

3) If tcpd was compiled to do so, it will use an AUTH inquiry to attempt to
identify the user.

See Vilmos and Stefan's recommendations to fix 1 and 2. If you are doing
AUTH lookups, you will have a delay while the AUTH lookup times out for a
Win client, and Win doesn't support inetd.
