I've been having difficulties in mounting a hard disk with my current set-up.
I've got Linux installed to a file on a hard disk, but when I try to mount
the other hard disk with "mount -t affs /dev/hdb /usr/dh0" I got the response
"mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock or too many mounted file
systems". Is there any way I can find out what the problem could be?

This morning my box was running fine, receiving email and letting me ftp
out. Then I pulled down a bunch of rpms, did a bunch of security stuff
(having just gotten cracked), and rebooted. Now, my eth0 isn't coming
up. It keeps saying "Delaying eth0 initialization", but what does that
mean? Delaying it til when, and why? Where do I look to see what I
changed? This happens if I use linuxconf to restart the network
service, or if I use netcfg to attempt to activate the eth0 interface
(and also during boot time).

How did you use xvidtune? Did you have to run xf86config to get into
xvidtune? I have redhat 6.2. Excuse me if the questions seem rather basic.
I'm new to this.

I have access to a Dell machine (running Slackware 7.0 with kernel
version 2.2.13) that I'm trying to set up sound on. It has a Sound
Blaster Live! card. I tried both the Creative open source driver and
the ALSA drivers, and both resulted in the same thing: The card plays
fine in a virtual console, but when XFree86 (version 3.3.5) is running,
sound cuts out when things happen in X (such as windows moving or
windows repainting). This sounds like an IRQ conflict to me, but I saw
no way to configure IRQ settings through Dell's BIOS or on the video
card.
The sound card plays just fine outside of X or when X is up but is idle.
Any suggestions?

Subject: dual boot linux+win98 -> no access to cd-rom ?
Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 08:05:34 +0200
Hye,
Big issue for my tiny head ! and no answer until now from neither from nec
nor my reseller...
I just bought a nec versa ax notebook.
I tried to make a dual boot with Linux and W98 on my laptop. I have now a
serious problem: no way to access to the cd-rom anymore.
I may have crashed the master boot.
I don't have the masterCD to recover my laptop to the original state.
I downloaded on nec's site a program to create a recovery disket. At the end
of running it is asking me a system serial number but my s/n does not work
??
1/ Does anyone think the diagnostic is ok or is there another cause (despite
hardware pb) ?
2/ Is there any way to download the Mastercd somewhere ?
3/ What does mean the system serial number asked by the program run from the
recovery disk. How could I find it ? Is there any program running without
asking it ?
4/ Is there any other program, site, mailing list or newsgroup that could
help us ?
Thanks, really thanks to everybody,
Black Kevin

Mike had it right...wow, I am a true newbie and here I am dispensing tech
support...weird.
Someone on the Gentus Linux forum (which is really Red Hat) told me about
the CPUID issue I was having with my Thunderbird...the correct value is 1,
so when you are asked to put in kernel options, type:
linux x86_serial_nr=1
and you'll be set. Just wanted to clarify that the value should be 1, and
not 0. Hope I'm not repeatingt the obvious.

In all probability, you omitted something when you configured the Kernel.
Is this a really, really old WD drive? That is, Original XT type
controller?
If so, that is a separate driver -- a separate option in whichever
configuration program you are using.

Subject: Linux on ZIP Floppy?

I have a P-166 with 64MB of RAM.....and a spare IDE ZIP floppy drive
(roughly 97MB capacity). I'd like to install a basic Linux sytem on the
ZIP floppy that would support my ethernet card and a text-based user
interface. I'd actually like to run the command line version of the SETI
@ Home client on this wee system.
An alternative would be to boot the system from a CD and use the ZIP
floppy as writeable storage - perhaps the swap file could go there.
Anyone done this?

Subject: Re: ISAPNP ad1816 sound card problem
Date: Sat, 23 Sep 2000 11:59:08 +0200
Hi Clive,
I'm sorry, but it's not this simple. Of course, checking /proc/ioports was the first
thing I tried, but there's no
other device using that port. Meanwhile, I found out that my BIOS is set to "NON-PNP
OS", meaning that my bios
configures all ISA-PNP devices. My system is dual boot, so I checked from Win95 how my
sound card is configured. This
gave me the following:
Card type: ADS7181 (strange, the card itself says it is AD1816...)
IRQ: 5
DMA: 1 and 0
IO: 0x240 (16 bytes), 0x388 (4 bytes) and 0x500 (16 bytes)
MPU:
IRQ: 11
IO: 0x340 (2 bytes)
Joystick:
IO: 0x200 (8 bytes)
I changed my /etc/isapnp.conf to reflect this setting. Relevant lines are:
(READPORT 0x0273)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL)) # or WARNING
(CONFIGURE ADS7181/-1 (LD 0
(INT 0 (IRQ 5 (MODE +E)))
(DMA 0 (CHANNEL 1))

(IO 2 (SIZE 16) (BASE 0x0500))
(NAME "ADS7181/-1[0]{Analog Devices AD1816A}")

))
(CONFIGURE ADS7181/-1 (LD 1

(IO 0 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0330))
(NAME "ADS7181/-1[1]{Analog Devices AD1816A}")

(CONFIGURE ADS7181/-1 (LD 2
(IO 0 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x0200))
(NAME "ADS7181/-1[2]{Analog Devices AD1816A}")
(ACT Y)
))
(WAITFORKEY)
As you can see, I left out the (CHECK) option in all IO-port configuration lines,
because otherwise isapnp would
fail. With this setup, I managed to get the joystick to work, and the soundcard works
with the
Soundblaster/Soundblaster-pro driver, although the driver complains that my card is
NOT fully sb-compatible, which,
indeed, it is not.
With this configuration, I get at least SOME sound, bit 16 bit doesn't seem to work.
Do you have any more suggestions?
Thanx a lot already,
