Hello,
I got a problem with net booting.
I have a RH 6.2 installed on a computer, and it works fine.
But i want my computer to boot on the network.
So i put a 3com nic with a flash rom, configure a bootp and tftp server
and made a boot image (with the netboot package).
The computer loads the image properly and loads the kernel, but i have a
message during the boot process :
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= options to kernel.
Can anybody explain me this message and help me ?
Thanks.

from my limited experience i found that i've always needed to first set
aside a single partition for linux (rather than free space)
then i go to the linux installation,
*delete* the partition to creteate the free space to
*add* my linux partitions.
it has never failed yet

Subject: problem with lpd
Date: 27 Sep 2000 10:37:38 GMT
I have the following problem with lpd on several machines all
running Redhat 6.1
Printing to a remote queue sometimes fail, and the corresponding
spool directory contains, in addition the the normal ones
(cfxxxx and dfxxxx), files whose name starts with "lpdtemp"
In that case, all queued jobs get actually printed after a lpd
restart, but the lpdtempxxx files remains.
When this occurs, I always get in the "message" log file :
printername: status: Permission denied
This may be related with timeouts (printer not reachable during
a certain time), but I never saw this problem with earlier versions.
Has anybody see the same problem? (and found a better solution than
restarting lpd from time to time)

So just grep the source for syslog.conf, and change the location.

FWIW, I am in exactly same situation.
Also, my though was that it was a dud image - though I can mount it on
my other linux box and it looks ok there (i.e. has the usual file
structure etc).
System that I am trying to install it on boots fine into RH 6.2 and
installs all the way without trouble. It's a AMD K2-200, 128 MB RAM,
6GB HD (Master 1st IDE) and one CD-ROM (Master 2nd IDE). The
system also has a PCI network card and a SB Vibra. No SCSI controllers.
I downloaded the images from www.linuxiso.org.

To my knowledge 'equation' stays for 'equal'; no equal, no equation. On
the other hand is *usually* noted down 'equation' for both equations and
inequations (that is f(x)[<,>, <=, >=]y.
BUT. I don't find 'equation', even in the wide sense, being the rigth
word. English is not my mother language, but I would say:
Here is the *expression*:
X->P->E

Hi there -
I'm using RedHat 6.0. I try to connect from a Win2K box and the connection
takes forever...and then drops the connection. Here's what it looks like
from a Win2K box trying to ftp to my linux box...
C:\>ftp linux
Connected to linux. (long wait here...a couple of minutes)
Connection closed by remote host.
I can ftp to my linux box from my IBM AS/400 and it works fine. I also tried
ftping from the linux box back to itself - it connects (after a very long
time) and then seems to process fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks...

What is it you want to do? Just copy the file to disc? Then use any CD
burning software you want. Is it supposed to be a disc image? Try to
mount it on a loop-back device then. If it's something else you want, be
more clearly in stating your question.

This is my problem too!
Check to make sure inetd process is running.
Verify your /etc/inet.conf file has a line similar to this:
'ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd in.ftpd -l -a'
I have both of those, and the in.ftpd process runs during an attempt to
establish an ftp session to the linux box, but I still have the symptoms below.
Please post and email if you get a solution to this.

Put it in making sure the jumpers are correctly configured. Next decide
what partition scheme you want to use. If you are simply storing data
on a stand alone machine there is really no reason to make both FAT32
and EXT2 partiions on it, Linux will read the FAT32 just fine - but will
NOT allow extended security attirbutes on it. Use Linux fdisk (or
gfdisk) and mkfs on it. You need to specify which disk it is (probably
/dev/hdb???) and the partition number when formatting with mkfs (maybe
/dev/hdb1 or hdb5???) - it all depends on which IDE channel you put it
on and where it sets in the IDE device chain.
If EXT2 is not important to you then simply fire up a DOS disk (floppy
or dual boot from the other disk if Windows lives there too). Run
DOS FDISK and partition it and then FORMAT it after a reboot with
FORMAT. Windows sees it automagically, Linux will have to mount it.
Create a directory where you would like to mount the drive, say /newdisk
. Regardless of what type you make it you the have to mount the disk,
use this comand: mount -t vfat /dev/hdb /newmount , the -t depends on
how you've formatted it, vfat=fat(32), use ext2 for ext2. the /dev/hd?
depends again on what channel it is running on and where it is on the
IDE device chain. If it then reads and writes good either edit
/etc/fstab manually (be carefull, make a backup), or use something like
linuxconf to add it to your system permanently.
