Incorrect for most tar-versions I used.
I can=B4t remember using f as the last switch (I=B4m used to use it as th=
e=20
second option) since 7 years, the f just tells tar that the next=20
whitespace-seperated option after the switches-option (xfvI ;-)) is the=20
archive-name.

First question: Do you want to install Linux on a computer alone or with=
=20
another Operating System (Windows)?
If on its own, let RedHat do everything. Just answer Yes.
If you would like to have both Windows and Linux on the same box, you=20
have to consider 'partitions'. Partitions of a disk are like making the =
computer believe you have several hard disks, not just one. Ask about=20
partitions in this newsgroup.
Gnome: In Windows or Macintosh you have a desktop, icons, etc. It's=20
always the same. In Linux, you have a variety of =93Desktops=94. One of =
them=20
is Gnome. Another one is KDE. Others are AnotherStep, NeXT, ICE,....=20
Think of them as different graphical approaches.

Dumb newbie question.
I can not configure the apache users / groups using linuxconf under
Redhat 6.2.
The option just shows quit as an option.
When I try to access the site I get "you do not have permission to
access / on..."
Any help gratefully accepted.

Here's an uugetty line from an inittab that I used years ago:
d3:2:respawn:/sbin/uugetty -d /etc/default/uugetty.ttyS1 ttyS1 38400 vt100 LDISC0
It's probably not as sophisticated as it could be but I was pretty raw
at doing such things then. Still, it worked to connect to my office.
If you want the other configuration files associated with this then
ask and I'll send them via email. Uugetty doen't seem to be actively
supported now and a switch to mgetty might well be in order, as
suggested by Bill Unruh.

Is it necessary (or desirable) to be "sophisticated"?
I've used the following mgetty line in inittab for years without problems:
S0:12345:respawn:/usr/local/sbin/mgetty -x 5 ttyS0

If it's flicker you're getting, you may have to trim out one or some of
the higher vertical frequency mode lines for your monitor. For example
the monitor I use with an STB Velocity 128 card, even though it's
supposed to do 1024x768 interlaced at 86.958 KHz flickers like hell at
that setting if I select the interlaced setting under generic settings
in xf86cinfig #4 for the particular monitor, so I set it at setting #7
for high frequency SVGA, and even then sometimes on different systems it
will wind up with a higher line in the config file that the system
thinks it can run under and I get the flicker. I just edit the
XF86Config and commit out all the mode lines for anything higher than, I
believe it's 67 KHz and it solves the problem. Right now I'm running it
with XFree86 4.01 and I had to do the same thing with it. But for just a
16 meg video card and semi generic monitor, I get 1024x768 or any
virtual screen up 1600 x 1200 quit well at 24 depth. Guess it's 64
million colors or something.
Hope this helps.
Charlie

Subject: Mandrake Boot Problems
Date: Thu, 28 Sep 2000 01:47:58 GMT
Hi all!
I've recently installed Mandrake 7.1 on my Athlon 700MHz, 256MB @ my
office.
It used to be running Mandrake 6.0 (which I still have on a separate
drive), but now some weird shit problems have arisen:
1) First installation went fine, but when booting Mandrake for the first
time it died starting the hard drive optimizations for my second hard
disk (mind you, I need it to move a lot of work and stuff to the new
hard
drive).
2) Second installation went fine, and before booting, I copied the
2.2.16 kernel/modules/everything over and created the image for it in
lilo. This installation booted fine (except some weird "missing
symbols" problems) - even all the way to KDE, and I got to copy most of
my stuff over from the old HD over to the new one. BUT (this is the
kicker), I changed /etc/inittab to have 8 tty's active (Alt-F1 thru
Alt-F8, Alt-F9 = X11 ). Now, it locks up when it tries to start httpd
(apache) !!!!!! As if that wasn't weird enough, I try using Interactive
startup, and skip httpd. After this, it boots "fine", but when it comes
time to start X, it locks up again on a black screen!!
Tomorrow I'm going to try removing the old hard drive and seeing if it
boots correctly, but what gets me is: How can it be locking up while
starting APACHE of all things!?!??!?!
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
BTW: Video card is an nVidia RIVA 128ZX (I know!!! but how can a
programmer justify buying a bigger-badder-better video card when he's
not supposed to be playing games??? :) )
What's weird is that the first boot, X started fine!!!! NO PROBLEMS!!!

IMNSHO, it's much better than the commercial SSH. OpenSSH supports SSH1 and
SSH2 right out of the box. Only certain versions of SSH support both
protocols.
Also, I like having source code.

I don't understand the way your partitions are setup, but I want to ask you what
you used to create the extended partition with logical drives. As a wild guess
to your problem, if you used Windows 98se or Partition Magic v.4 or 5, there is a
"problem" with those programs creating extended partitions: As far as I know,
they use Microsoft's own type of extended partition (type 'OF') instead of the
regular extended partition (type '05'). Type '05' is the one normally used as
the extended partition "wrapping" or enclosing logical drives. The type 'OF'
extended partition type is recognized only by Microsoft's OS (it was invented by
Microsoft) and the other OS's don't recognize it as an extended partition. If
you can get a hold of a partition table editor, like ptedit.exe, you can check to
see what partition type is being used as an extended partition.
Also, as for bootable partitions, keep the bootable partitions completely within
the 1024 cylinder limit (within 8.4Gb).

Actually, sounds like there might be a bug somewhere.
Which version of Debian do you have now?
You might try an earlier distribution's version of xntp, e.g.,
xntp3_5.93-3.deb in
ftp://archive.debian.org/debian-archive/dists/slink/main/binary-i386/net .
Alternatively, you might try installing both ldso and libc6 at the same
time, something like
$ dpkg -i ldso_1.9.11-9.deb libc6_2.1.3-13.deb
(note that you want -13, not -10, for the most recent security fixes).
Is there a reason why you aren't using apt-get(8)?
