It sounds like you are using RH6.0. If this is correct,
install the kernel-headers-2.2.5-15 package. In the
/usr/src/linux-2.2.5-15/configs directory, you will
find various cnfig files. Copy the appropiate one to
/usr/src/linux-2.2.5-15/.config after patching your
source and you should be good to go.

You can install Linux from a ZipDisk from MS/PC-DOS by copying them to a FAT
partition from the ZipDisk before beginning the installation. Alternatively,
you can grab the diskette images from, say ftp.debian.org, and use the floppy
drive for initial installation - with a MODEM used to grab the packages you
need for applications. This is how I installed Linux on a Toshiba notebook
computer. I'd recommend you repartition your HD to about 15MB (DOS) and the
rest for Linux - then you can always (if desired) remove the DOS partition is
so desired and move your /boot partition to the former DOS partition.
With Linux the options are limited only by your imagination and your current
ability. Fortunately, your current ability is stretched with Linux so it
truly is limitless.

Subject: Adaptec 1480A SCSI Cardbus problem on T20/RH6.2
Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 18:31:58 GMT
I've been having a frustrating time trying to get my Adaptec cardbus
SCSI adapter to work in my new T20. I'm quite sure that the real
problem is quite obvious, but I can't put my finger on it...
This card worked fine in my two previous laptops (TP560, TP560X)
running various 2.2.x kernels and 3.x PCMCIA revisions, and I don't
now recall doing anything particular to get it to work, other than my
usual routine of building a customised stripped-down kernel.
On this installation, however (mostly from the RH 6.2 distro, but
rebuilding the kernel and pcmcia-cs-3.1.8 didn't help), I get the
infamous "aic7xxx: I/O ports already in use" error:
cardmgr[481]: initializing socket 0

Any suggestions on what I should look at? What have I missed that was
obvious to me two years ago? Thanks!

Try using an earlier version of pppd et al from GNU/Linux 2.2 I
upgraded from 2.0 to 2.2 and the pon utility would not work until I
renamed a particular file in /etc back to the original pre-upgrade name.

Subject: Installing RedHat Linux 6.2
Date: Fri, 29 Sep 2000 21:32:19 +0200
Hi.
I'm having a problem installing Linux RedHat 6.2.
In short, all the installation seems to go fine, but afterwards, when the
system is rebooting, it hangs and says:
In swapper mode.
Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill idle task.
I have tried doing everything again. I've written over LILO by reinstalling
windows (are there any other way to do this?), and reinstalled RedHat. I've
tried to make patitions with Partition Magic first, then install Linux
again, and I've tried to let the installation program take care of all the
partitions. I've even tried to install the partitionless installation, when
you put the linux files onto a FAT32 disk. Every time the same thing
happens. It comes exactly to the same place every time.
Is it possible that there are a hardware conflikt somewhere?
It seems to me that there is something left over from the first installation
that isn't removed by reinstall... Can this be possible?
I've tried to boot from the boot disk, but the exactly same thing happens.
Can anyone help med with this?

I installed 7.1 in FAT in Win98 on a new E-machine. It
was the easiest time I ever had in getting a Linux distro
going.
However, modem won't dial. Maybe E-machine has a
winmodem.
If I could get a DOS emulator going, then maybe I could
dial out by using Win software running in Linux.
Suggestions would be welcome (I'm still a newbie).
On second thought, maybe the emulator that sets up
7.1 under DOS would do the trick. The problem is that
I don't know how to proceed.

Been there; done that. If slrn is threading as slowly for you (by the same
order of magnitude) as tin from an NNTP feed, then perhaps some
configuring of your slrnrc is in order ;-)
In any event, for the original poster, I should put in the full command
for setting the nntpserver environment variable.
Try: export NNTPSERVER=whatever.the.address.is
and give tin -r a go.

If you've run a similar setup and might know why this isn't working,
I'd appreciate hearing from you (if replying by email, please remove
TAKETHISOUT from my address...)
I have a Mylex Acceleraid 250 working very nicely in a Redhat 6.2
system. The problem is that, after installing Linux (/ and /boot
partitions) I installed DOS on the third RAID partition
(/dev/rd/c0d0p3) which I had kept aside for that purpose. I have LILO
configured with:
other=/dev/rd/c0d0p3
label=dos
When I boot the system from a DOS 6.22 floppy, this partition is seen
fine as C:, and I was able to run "format /s" on it without a problem,
and verify that command.com, msdos.sys, and io.sys appeared. I also
ran "fdisk /dev/rd/c0d0" from Linux and verified that the bootable
flag was set on the partition.
However, when I tell LILO: to boot "dos", it says "Loading dos" and
then complains "Non-system disk or disk error". I'm not sure if this
is a Linux, DOS or bios error causing this...
Thanks for any suggestions...
Rohan.

Thanks for the quick reply -- I'll go and update that right away.
I saw that 3.1.8 no longer causes a kernel panic when the card is
ejected (unlike the version I had been using), so it didn't occur to
me that other previously working features might have broken...

Its got about 240 megs of HD space and I can fill up the memory slots

Greetings
Printing to an Epson Stylus660 using either the more 'normal' lpr or the pdq
system.
The printer has a tendency to just stop dead half way through a page (and no
it's not a paper jam :)
Wierd thing is, there's no error messages, there's nothing complicated to
print (it's a ps file btw) If I clear the queue, reset the buffer and start
the job afresh from the page which locked, it (usually) then prints ok.
Occassionally it will pause for 5-10 minutes and then carry on, only to
freeze for good a couple of pages later.
If anybody has any ideas, it would be much appreciated.
Cheers

I'm having a problem installing my printer (HP Photosmart 1100) under RH
7.0. I compiled support for the parallel port, PC style hardware, and
parallel printer support into the kernel. I'm using the Deskjet 400/...
filter (which worked for this printer and my real DJ 400 under RH6.2).
printtool recognizes the printer at /dev/lp0 and can print directly to the
port, but normal printing fails. The hardware is set up correctly, but
normal ASCII files and PS test files in printtool will not work. Is
something wrong with lpr? After printing a file, lpq tells me that there
are no files in the queue. This must be something simple.
Thanks,
Eric
