The one book that I keep going back to ( when I just can't read the online doc's
) is
"running linux" by Matt Welsh and Lar Kaufman on ORielly books , it has been a
very helpful
resource for me and is not focused on any particular distro' which I like :)
Oh well , late post but hey hope it helps

Hi! I want to upgrade my XFree86: now I have the 3.3.5 release the but I
want the new to 4.0.1. I only want to know which is the best and safiest
way to do it. I have a Red Hat 6.1. thanks! Lorenzo

I've just managed to get red hat 7.0 downloaded and installed. I am now
having problems with the diplay.
I have been running RH 6.2 with XFree86 3.3.6 for some time and have had no
problems using the SVGA server as recomended for the viper II/Savage2000
chipset. However RH 7.0 with XFree86 4.0.1 loads fine, but as soon as i try
to move a window or scroll the whole display breaks up and the window is
split all over different areas of the screen.
I'd be really grateful if anyone knows how to fix this, as i need to start
using linux for uni work real soon. At the moment the system is completely
unusable.

Whatever the rationale is that *any* PC OS thinks it knows better and
proceeds to turn NUMLOCK OFF, regardless that in the BIOS it has been
set by the user to ON, totally escapes me.
I bought a 900+ page book "Mastering Linux", copyright 1999, that
included a RedHat 5.1 CD. Between the book, the CD, and various help
files on the net, I haven't found an explanation on how to keep NUMLOCK
ON in RedHat 5.1, 6.1, or 6.2, Corel 1.0, 1.1 or 1.2, or Mandrake 7.1.
Mandrake installation was friendly enough to ask me if I wanted it on,
so when I boot Mandrake, part of the initialization messages that flash
on the screen too fast to digest include "Starting NUMLOCK [OK]".
However, even that isn't fully effective: console logins set NUM ON, and
initialized KDE sessions have it ON, but to start KDM from a console
login, NUM is inexplicably turned OFF until after successful login, so
the keypad is unavailable to type in a numeric password without first
hitting the NUM key!
Various docs provide variations on the following subscript:
for t in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
do
setleds +num < /dev/tty$t > /dev/null
done
to install in various initialization files, such as /etc/rc.local or
/etc/rc.d/rc among others.
I tried adding the script to /etc/rc.d/rc in RH 6.2. This works, but
only for console sessions, and only *after* a successful login, so, like
in Mandrake, the keypad is unavailable to type in a numeric password
without first hitting the NUM key.
The various window managers all seem to have a setup options menu for
handling things like mice & keyboards, but I can't find in any of them
under "keyboard" a tab or other setting to address NUMLOCK.
Surely *somewhere* must be a useful explanation to help me and others
like me who *hate* having NUMLOCK turned off to instruct Linux to keep
NUM ON ALWAYS! Someone *please* help!

I thought I'd ask for help here.
I'm sure you have noticed how the fonts in Netscape 4.*
for Linux is horrendously tiny -- average pages are simply
*impossible* to read.
Now, I'm wondering if it is simply a bug in Netscape, or
if it is something with the screen configuration. In
particular, if it is something that can be fixed. Of
course, I tried changing the Fonts settings in the
Preferences in Netscape, but that only helps in some
cases (rarely, I would say).
Is there any know fix to this problem? I'd appreciate
any info or pointers.
Thanks,
Carlos

I used this to fix the problem in XF86 3.3.6 I don't know if it will
work in 4.0 or not.
Edit your "/home/user/.Xdefaults" and add this line to the end of the
file.
Netscape*documentFonts.sizeIncrement: 5
Then in the Netscape menu choose:
"edit/preferences/appearance/fonts" and set the browser to:
Use my default fonts, overriding document-specified fonts
Be sure to choose the font you wish to use before saving changes.
The 5 in the Netscape*documentFonts line could be 10, 15, 20
After making the changes shown above, close and restart Netscape.

I am having some difficulties with getting sound from my SB PCI128 under

other than in the /etc/conf.modules, "alias sound es1370" is added.
/proc/interrupts & lspci both see it -- what else can I do? Thanks in

Subject: Re: SETUP PROBLEMS

Unbelievable, but I have the same modem and the same sound card. BOTH
are ISA. If yours are PCI, then my suggestions won't help.
Boot Win98 -> My Computer (right click) ->Device Manager. Get the I/O
and IRQ for the modem, and I/O, IRQ and DMA for the sound card.
The modem:
The bios assigns the modem a different irq than the serial driver
expects (irq 4, or 3), if the modem is internal. (External modems are
connected to the serial port, so they do use irq 3, or 4). If your modem
was assigned irq 11, say, then you must tell Linux to use that irq when
trying to talk to the modem. Make a link
ln -s /dev/ttyS2 /dev/modem # assuming your modem is on
/dev/ttyS2; you must use the correct one for you.
setserial -a /dev/modem # just to see what Linux would be
using when talking to the modem
This should report I/O 0x03e8 and IRQ 4.
Change either one, if it does not agree with the resources you got from
Win98. E.g.
setserial /dev/modem irq 11
You need to do this prior to anythng else, otherwise the system can't
talk to your modem at all. Now start xminicom, and try to dial. If the
modem responds promptly, you're in business. If not, doublecheck that
you're using the correct ttyS?, that the link /dev/modem points to the
correct tty, and that you set correctly the I/O port and IRQ for that
tty.
If all is well, you need to put
setserial /dev/modem irq 11 # or whatever irq or IO you
used above
in a startup script, e.g. at the end of /etc/rc.d/rc.local, so that this
is done automatically at boot.
If you can talk to the modem, you need to configure ppp, which is a
whole new story. None of the configuration programs will work, if they
can't talk to the modem. It is trivial to setup ppp with rp3 under gnome
(see for instance
http://www.redhat.com/support -- the modem or the ppp tips). However,
rp3 and wvdial have some shortcomings (e.g. it stores the password in
plain text in /etc/wvdial.conf, and it is difficult to allow other users
to dial). I prefer XISP (do a search on freshmeat.net).
The sound card:
See if you have any /etc/isapnp.conf. If you do,
mv /etc/isapnp.conf /etc/isapnp.conf.old
pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf
Edit the isapnp.conf file. You should see entries for your modem and the
sound card. Uncomment the stanza that corresponds for the settings you
got from windows, both for the modem and for the soundcard.
isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
or reboot.
That should be it. Open xmixer to turn down the volume.

[RH6.2]
I'm trying to use the GUI custom install for RH6.2 .
I got to Disk Druid and wasn't too sure what partition
sizes to pick, but I figured I'd just familiarize myself
with the install procedures, then wipe out the partitions
and choose more sensible sizes and do it over once I
understood the process.
But I can't seem to get past Disk Druid. I chose
partitions for every mount point, but the "Next"
button remains gray.
If it doesn't like my partition sizes or where I
put them, shouldn't it say something instead of
just not letting me go on?
I'm trying to install onto hdb, which is an 8.4 GB
Western Digital, starting with the second primary
partition (I have a tiny primary partition at the
start of the drive to keep Windows drive letters
from changing). hda is a 20.5 GB Western Digital.
Any help appreciated.

First it's a 568.zip. Then, Lucent driver sets /dev/ttyS14 and you
have to set symbolic link /dev/modem to ttyS0 or whatever port you
using.RTM, i did and install same modem few days ago.
And ttyS != ttys.

I use the xmodmap way, since I could care less if the led is on or not.

I think there are many causes which produce the
same problem. One releatively rare condition is
when the server hosts multiple domain names, or
if multiple domains are pointing to the hosting
(linux) ip#. In this case the reverse lookup may
fail with some software. If this is your case,
try adding all the domains to your ip number in
the /etc/hosts file. For example if your ip# is
1.2.3.4 and there are two domains a.com and b.org
pointing to this ip number in the internet DNS
tables, add a line
1.2.3.4 a.com b.org
You do not have to reboot or restart in.ftpd
after the above step. Let us know if this solved
anybody's problem.

Lilo itself can be installed in the master boot record (/dev/sda) or the
active partition either of these should work but if you use the active
partition you must be sure you marked the partition active with fdisk.
RH will install the kernel in your /boot partition if you created one
in the install procedure. I think you have some other problem. Be
sure you check the 'linear' checkbox when installing.

That is a low-level format. You still need to add a DOS or Linux filesystem
format.

non-Linux

Are you sure you have activated SCSI bios booting in the motherboard setup?
At the very least, you should see LILO start to load. If this is happening
you should be able to boot from a floppy to a point where you can
manually correct anything that is wrong in /etc/lilo.conf and run /sbin/lilo
again regardless of what the install scripts have done.
