I recently installed Linux Mandrake on my gateway pc. Most of my
hardware is not supported, and I would like to uninstall linux to free
up space on my disc. However during install the boot sector of my
windows disc was overwritten. Now nothing happens after the bios
finishes all its stuff, unless I have the linux disc connected as
master. I think I need to replace the boot sector, but don't really
know what I am talking about.
I can get into dos if I use a boot floppy, but can't get to windows. any
help would be appreciated as I have only 900 mb free space on my windows
disc.

Subject: Recomended Motherboards for K6-2 and K6-3
Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2000 03:00:47 GMT
I have had and one of my friends has been running Linux on K6-2 and K6-3
systems and have had way too many bad motherboard experiences. (Skip
the first two paragraphs to get to the meat.)
My friend started off with an Epox board with a K6-2 475MHz. His
troubles began a couple of months down the road when his Epox board
burned up. He decided to go with an MSI board with an ALi chip set, but
that turned out to have tons of problems. For one it would
intermittently detect his CPU as a 500 MHz instead of 475 MHz. Then it
wouldn't do a CD-ROM boot when he had both his DVD and CD burn plugged
in. Sometimes it wouldn't detect all of his RAM (the boot test before
Linux was started). Then when he got through that, the Mandrake 7.1
install would complain about an error detecting memory and do a kernel
panic. I presume that this was do to another error in the board where
it would detect banks 0, 1, 3, 4 instead of 0, 1, 2, 3. Reflashing the
BIOS with the latest revision didn't help much. He eventually broke
down and bought an Athlon system. (He just bought the motherboard and
CPU and kept the rest of his previous system.) His Athlon system
actually works right unlike his K6-2 system.
I first got my hands on a Vigor board that was left over from a low end
Linux based web server that I put together with my brother. (It was a
replacement that came a few weeks after a major short on the video card
took both the motherboard and video card out. This occurred a few hours
before we where going to co-locate the server so we didn't wait for the
replacement board even though it was free. It was probably a good thing
seeing that the Vigor board wasn't all that great and we where able to
get something in that worked right.) When I used the board I ran into a
few problems including a flaky secondary IDE controller that fouled
things up pretty good, even under Linux, and the board would
intermittently go into an infinite boot loop (before it would get down
to IDE detection). My current board is a Tyan Trinity S1598. It works
good, but it has the processor socket on the top front of the board.
Even with the stock heat sink and fan combo for the boxed K6-3 400 MHz,
I recently noticed that two of my three 5 1/4 inch drive bays are
blocked in my cheep $26 case. The case does seem to have standard ATX
dimensions even though it is cheep, so I have a hard time blaming it on
the case. I now have an Athlon system with a Full tower In-Win Q500
case and ASUS K7V motherboard as my primary Linux box, but I still have
my K6-3 system which I use as my windows box / Linux tinker toy.
Now the question is what would you recommended as a good motherboard for
a Super7 processor (such as K6-2 or K6-3) that doesn't or block drive
bays on a mid tower ATX or foul up with Linux or just foul up in
operation in general?

Hello,
I have just installed SuSi Linux 6.4 with some error messages. I can not
find the /etc/resolv.conf file. I found the information on my machine
and nameservers in /etc/rc.config. Do I need this file, and if I do,
will I have to re-install Linux?

Bert,
Locate and save/remove/rename you current XF86Config file. Rerun your
video configuration utility again, usually it's a program like XF86Setup
or similar, and this time tell it you have a generic SVGA monitor, and
if it allows you to specify, indicate that the monitor is capable of
doing 800x res. Finish the configuration, and it will gererate you a
new XF86Config file. Now, this new file whill have several entries for
each resolution you requested to be able to use. Say you requested 640x
and 800x resolutions. There will be in the XF86Config file several
"modeline" entries for each resoltion. Only one should be "enabled" and
the remainder of them should be "commented out" so as to be
ineffective. The ONE which you select to be the enabled one can be
selected by you because it has the vertical refresh rate which you
prefer to use, i.e. a higher, less flickery rate.
So then, after you've run that vid config utility, you can either use
the file as is, without any further editing, and just use whatever
vertical refresh rate resulted as the first entry, or you can manually
edit the file to comment out all but the one you desire. While in X,
you can toggle through all of the correctly configured resolutions with
the Ctrl-Alt-NumKeypd + or - and you can always kill any X session with
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
Hope it helps you out,
Valentin

Hi Bert,
First try Shift-Alt-Plus.on.the.keypad
and Shift-Alt-Minus.on.the.keypad. These
may toggle your resolution between several
choices if you set up those choices in the
original install process.
You can also run Xconfigurator in Red Hat.
That gives you a place to change the screen
settings. Just type Xconfigurator at a
command prompt. Do this as root.
You can also run xf86config, which gives
instructions to follow. Or you can edit
the relevant files by hand which is
confusing for beginners.

This might seem silly, but in addition
to tweaking the settings as advised,
be sure the speakers are plugged in
the right place. On my SB it is the
black socket not the red, blue or green
one :-)
I did this wrong the first time through.
In addition check to see that the volume
is turned up on the various sound panels
-- xplaycd and xmixer both have volume
sliders and you may need to adjust in
both places if you are using those apps,
which I think were default on RH 6.0

Subject: Installing RedHat 6.2 on an ASUS A7V
Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2000 04:49:47 GMT
I have the following system setup:
ASUS A7V motherboard with Athlon 950 (Thunderbird)
30GB ATA-100 HDD on Promise IDE controller (Windoze boot drive)
8.4GB ATA-33 HDD on primary IDE controller
256MB RAM, Voodoo video, Realtek ethernet, CD-ROM, CD-RW, etc.
When I tried to install RedHat 6.2 on the 8.4GB disk, I discovered
that Linux could not "see" the ATA-100 drive. I went ahead with the
installation and found that the option of installing LILO was not
presented (I assume because Linux thought it was the only OS).
Anyway, I continued, assuming I would resort to a floppy boot until I
could solve this problem. Of course, the system locked up while
detecting hardware upon first boot (it is RedHat, after all).
I have since decided to use the 8.4GB HDD as a backup drive and am
planning to buy another ATA-100 drive for Linux.
My problem is:
Since the ASUS considers the Promise IDE controller as a secondary
device, how do I get Linux to recognize that these disks are present?
I have already disabled the 8.4GB disk in the BIOS boot section so
that the boot sequence is:
Floppy --> CD-ROM --> It then goes to the Promise controller and
boots from this drive.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Darrell

use your win98 bootup disk to boot the box, then at command line,
type "fdisk /mbr", hopefully it will re-initialize MBR.
if fdisk.exe from boot disk doesn't work, get gdisk.exe (part of Norton
Ghost), you can download trial version of Ghost from cnet.com

Just in case anybody else runs into this problem down the line..
my /dev/usb/ttyACM0 was working just fine you could minicom into it.
All of the ppp dialers that I found though wanted to only stay 1 level
into /dev so when I put int /dev/usb/ttyACM0 it converted it to
/dev/ttyACM0 (which is wrong obviously) so to get around it I used
ln -n /dev/usb/ttyACM0 /dev/modem and pointed Redhats config to
/dev/modem and it seems to work fine now.
I also had to modify the wvdial.conf so that the initialization string
was right. I set it to ATZ V1 *VO=5 which is to reset, turn on prompts
and use dynamic bandwidth allocation.

Hello,
I just recompiled and installed kernel 2.2.13 with only two changes

NFS server, and NFS Sun server support. I have a P166 with 48MB ram.
Other kernels still boot fine. The error message I get with this newly

LILO boot:

-- System halted
I have never seen this before. Can someone please suggest what may be
