During the text install I selected Gnome Workstation...
There wasn't an option to make a boot disk
I'll try it again...

Just got my Tuxtops Obsidian 30W. It's a very nice machine -- I reinstalled
the OS the day after I got it since I bought it with just Linux and wanted
Linux/WinNT dual-boot. (Tuxtops offers a Linux/Win98 dual-boot config, but
I don't like Win9x). AFAIK, the Tuxtops 30W is the same hardware as a Dell
Inspiron 5000. I don't know what the differences are between the 5000 and
the 5000e (currently shippinng).

I cannot find this in the RH 6.1 docs that are on the CD, but I believe at
the boot prompt you enter "linux text" like this:
boot: linux text
Your video chip is not supported by XFree86 in RH 6.1 by default, but
could be configured manually as 4 MB Neomagic (even though it is 6 MB)
with the SVGA server or by compiling framebuffer support into the kernel
and using the FB server. For a monitor selection try LCD 1024x768 or
whatever your resolution is.

You either need a boot floppy, a primary /boot partition entirely below
cyl 1024 or a newer version of LILO that can boot beyond that. If you
have not written anything on your second FAT partition yet, you could
remove it and put it farther back or in an extended partition. Info on
how I partitioned the 9 GB drive on my F450 is at
http://www.de-srv.com/linux/sonyF450.html
When you get this all figured out, it would be helpful to write up your
own experiences to link from the Linux Laptop home page.

what does "rpm -q mysql" output? If its reporting 'package mysql-3.22.32-36 is
already installed' then rpm has the name of the package as all lowercase in its db.

Some time ago (1.5 years ish) I tried to install Linux as a dual boot with
NT4 but couldn't get it to work. As I have to have a win os for work, linux
had to go.
I'm hoping that the hole dual boot thing has evolved some, so much so that
even I could get it to work!! Could anyone point me in the direction of
something that looks like a manual, and is there any difference in the
various flavors of linux on this score??
any tips, things to lookout for, very gratefully received...

Another hint is that all GUI applications usually begin with X or x.
Gnome apps usually have gnome at the start and KDE applications have
a `k' prepended. You could create an Icon that called mpg123, but
you have to give it a list of files to play. Here is a command line
I use,
mpg123 -z -q /mp3/*/*.mp3 /mp3/*/*/*.mp3 &
This plays all of the MP3 files on my mp3 partition. This plays in
the background and I don't have to have the xmms program running.
With Gnome, you would right click on the gnome bar and select `add
new launcher'. Insert the command
`mpg123 -z -q /mp3/*/*.mp3 /mp3/*/*/*.mp3'.

From: Bill Pringlemeir <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2000 19:27:12 GMT
I would like to have the resolution set automatically according to the
user logging in. Hopefully I can set the virtual screen size to match
the resolution so that there is no panning around the screen.
Eg.
User 1, 1280x1024
User 2, 800x600
I can cycle through different resolutions. So I have the appropriate
lines set in the .XF86Config file. I am running an frame buffer
version for the Matrox G200 (although I don't think that matter for
this question).
Is the .XF86Config run as a script? It doesn't look like it. I
could use `whoami' to conditionally run sections. I would like to
do this from the level 5 automatic starting of `X'. I suppose that
it would be interesting to know how to do it from `startx' as well.

I think I am going to install LinuxMandrake 7.1 on my Win98 machine. I
have some PartitionMagic software that it recommends to do the
partitioning of my hard drive. I also have a lot of important stuff on
my drive right now, that I really don't want to lose and would be a big
hassle to back it all up. So is there any thing special I have to do to
make sure my current stuff is not lost? It sounds like I shouldn't have
a problem, but I wanted to see if anyone has first hand experience with
using this software.

Hmm... I'm pretty new to Debian, but I've used rpm based systems for a
while now... rpm does use a database to keep track of what is installed
and what dependencies and whatnot any given package has, so that when it
tries to install a package, it can check the database to make sure it
won't clobber something already installed, for instance. I hate to say
'rtfm', but in this case I think your best bet would to be spending some
time w/ the RPM-HOWTO, and 'man rpm'. I know you can rebuild the rpm
database pretty easily, I just can't remember ever having to do it (on
rpm systems). How exactly the rpm database will coordinate, if at all,
w/ the deb system, I have no idea.
As an alternative, I've heard great things about a package named
'alien', which supposedly specializes in converting rpm's to deb's and
vice versa. Might be worth a look on freshmeat.net.

Using easycat for a few years now. It works fine. Use 3 button
emulation for setup and set it up as a generic serial or ps2
mouse (depends on the model you get).

Not sure what you mean. If you mean the grab-and-drag
thingy that holds the item while you reposition your finger,
yes it works. It's a function of the pad and has nothing to do
with anything software.

Standard dialup ISP setup. The DHCP protocol takes care of this.
Here's the easy way to set up the necessary scripts. This assumes that
you have rp3-config loaded (if not, RPM it).
Step 1) Go into X
Step 2) Open up a terminal
Step 3) su - (which logs you in as root; you need root password here)
Step 4) rp3-config
Step 5) enter the requested data; DNS is optional
Step 6) exit rp3-config and exit root back to ordinary user
rp3-config creates a script in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts by the
name of ifcfg-ppp0 or ifcfg-ppp1 or whatever, depending on how many you
already have set up. It also sets up the password. An ordinary user
can bring up the ifcfg-ppp1 script, and take down the connection by
entering the commands...
ifup ppp1
ifdown ppp1
...respectively. There is actually a menu item on the Gnome menu to
invoke rp3-config and rp3 (Redhat ppp dialer). But, I wanted to make
this answer independant of whichever window-manager you use.
