I found that it also worked by snarfing the complete gcc install from a
RH7.0 disk 1. Thats 2.96-54, and it runs quite sweetly so far. Don't
forget to put in kgcc too, its the key I suspect.

Err, but that's not an equation above. An equation has a precise
meaning: two terms, separated by an equals sign (usually representing a
symmetric, reflexive, transitive relation). So whereas you can indeed
use an equal sign to represent things other than "identity" (which is
what I think you mean, because "equality represents equality" is a
tautology), that fact doesn't apply, since there is no equals sign, or
any other sign that can be construed as representing a reflexive,
symmetric, transitive relation.

Goodbye, loon. (and how do you know that there are an infinite number
of concepts?).

Subject: Downloading help
Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 21:11:50 -0500

Here's another question from another newbie...
I just finished downloading RH 7 from ftp.redhat.com, and I had a few
questions. I want to burn the files to cd's, but there's a total of 1.3 gig
of files, and I'm not sure which files go on which cd. Here's a bit from
the readme file:

DIRECTORY ORGANIZATION

Red Hat Linux is delivered on two CDROMs (disc 1 and disc 2). Disc 1 can
be directly booted into the installation on most modern PCs, and contains
the following directory structure:

/mnt/redhat
  |----> RedHat
  |        |----> RPMS         -- binary packages
  | `----> base -- information on this release of Red Hat
  | used by the installation process
  |----> images -- boot and ramdisk images
  |----> dosutils -- installation utilities for DOS
  |----> COPYING        -- copyright information
  |----> README         -- this file
  `----> RPM-GPG-KEY -- GPG signature for packages from Red Hat

The directory layout of disc 2 is as follows:

/mnt/redhat
  |----> RedHat
  |        `----> RPMS         -- additional binary packages
  |        `----> instimage    -- NFS installer tree
  |----> SRPMS -- source packages (more are on the dedicated
  |      SRPMS CD)
  |----> preview -- alpha and beta level packages (source
  | and binary) for the adventurous user
  |----> COPYING        -- copyright information
  |----> README         -- this file
  `----> RPM-GPG-KEY -- GPG signature for packages from Red Hat

The thing is, I don't know which RPM's belong on which cd. Does it really
matter? Will the installation process prompt for a different cd if it's not
on the other? Or am I going about this totally wrong?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Can anyone give me some ideas on how i can get an external pcmcia hard
drive to work in redhat 7.0? The computer is an x86 desktop computer
with an ISA card controller that controls the PCMCIA card reader. The
hard drives are plugged into the card reader. I tried to use the PCMCIA
boot disk but when it gets to the disk druid stage, it says no valid
devices are available for install.

Knowing I would regularly erase any Windows installation in my quest to
multiboot, I ordered my Thinkpad with Win98 and separately bought a retail
copy of Windows 2000, which I'm using now. I'd happily turn the Win98
"restore disk" in for a refund, but somehow I doubt IBM would accept it...
I think restore CDs are for people afraid to configure their systems
independently, or who want "quick fixes."

I've been using linux approx. 5 years and until now I haven't had any
printer problems. I have 2 machines and both of them report "Your
printer job (stdin) was not printed because it was not linked to the
original file". Sounds simple enough but I can't get them to work. I've
checked permissions, reloaded apsfilter and gone thru the HOWTO's many
times and everything checks out. I do print a graphics image while
installing apsfilter but after it finishes configuring the files nothing
works. I'm using the apsfilter that came packaged with v7.1. I can't
seem to find the version number. Any thoughts on this would be
appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

VNC is NOT nm30.exe compatible.
It has VNC under DOS that compatible with linux VNC.
VNC cannot send VDO and sound but send totally your screen.
To send sound you need speak freely under linux.
To make VDO cam to work under linux you need SANE.
If you make 3 softwares run together then I will blow nm30.exe away
BUT as I said it is NOT nm30.exe compatible.

Before you reinstall, read some of the
SuSE documentation. They have a whole
different way of setting up config
files than Red Hat if that is where you
are coming from. There is one giant
file (maybe it is /etc/rc.config) where
a large number of configuration variables
are set. The idea is to replace all
the little files like /etc/resolv.conf
with one big one.

I found it a little confusing because
I was used to RH, but
many people like it better.

Get the kernel source if you don't have it, read the kernel HOWTO,
enable PPP support, recompile the kernel, then install the new kernel.

If you have never done this before, or probably even if you have, make
sure you have a working boot diskette or CD (with a working kernel on
it, not just a boot loader).

If you buy a distribution from your local computer store or online, it
should come with an installation manual to help. I have installed
Redhat Linux at work with NT4, with no serious problems.

You will probably want at least 2GB for linux, if you are trying to
learn how to use it. Possibly more if you want to use large apps like
StarOffice. I have used a couple of flavors of Linux both on the same
disk and on a separate disk from Windows, and either way should work
fine.

If you can afford a second disk, or even better an older machine to
practice on, this can reduce the chance of a configuration problem
losing your NT files.

A lot of people like Mandrake Linux for new users, as it is supposed to
be easier than most to install. The installation and administration
tools are the only real differences among the different distributions.

As far as things to look out for, I would say just make sure you get the
partitioning right, have a backup of your important Windows files just
in case, make sure you have a working Windows boot diskette, and you
make a Linux boot diskette when the installation program offers to do it
for you.

I fixed the problem by re-locating the boot file.
This is strange, but,...

One problem with your idea is there is no network card in the SCO box. It
currently just runs about 20 dumb terminals or PC's with terminal emulation.
The operating system is at least 10 years old so will not natively support a
CD writer.

Cheers,
Ross.
