Subject: RedHat 6.1 installation on laptop problem
Hello everybody,
I tried to install RedHat 6.1 on my brothers laptop yesterday an failed.
As I usually only use SuSE,
I do have a question to you RedHad guru's here.
The problem was, that the installation program obviously chose a wrong
graphics resolution. I guess
recognized the graphics chip all right, but didn't consider, that
there's a TFT display connected
which can only display 800x600 pixels and thus chose too high a
resolution.
Now the question is: can I tell the installation program which
resolution to use in graphics mode
somehow?
BTW: the text-only installation didn't work either. At the point where
you are supposed to choose the
keyboard layout in a dialog (which is preset to us, not german which the
keyboar is), neither key works anymore and you can only switch off the
computer.
This all refers to the german version of RedHat 6.1.
The keyborad problem is definately not a hardware problem, for as a last
resort I installed a SuSE 6.1 of mine
on his computer, which worked smoothly. But as he has these RedHat CDs,
he'd prefer to have RedHat
installed.
Another way might be, to change the now running SuSE system into a
RedHat one. Can one run the RedHat
setup program from within a running SuSE system right from the CD
somehow? Which is the RedHat setup
program? (I only started the installation from the boot-disk until now).
Thanks for any hints,
Volker

Subject: PPP set up error
Date: Mon, 02 Oct 2000 16:50:48 +0530
Hello,
I am using linux RedHat 6.2. I have dial up connection.
I have /etc/hosts entry as
127.0.0.1 localhost adithya
as the entry. I do not have a fixed IP address to my machine.
IP address gets assigned Dynamically.
I have configured ppp at boot time. During boot up, the
ppp is started for /dev/ttyS0 with 11500 bps speed. But pppd
could not get the ppp interface up, reporting error 2.
I have looked at the /var/log/messages. During 'ifup'
pppd is reporting 'Bad IP address 127.0.0.1'
How can I correct this?
More information:
/dev/modem is a link to /dev/ttyS0 and modem is connected to this.
I have read through /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.7/README.linux
I have created the character special device /dev/ppp with
major number 108 (as suggested by README.linux).
The modprobe -v ppp reports that
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-12/net/slhc.o
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.2.14-12/net/ppp.o
I guess I have got most of the things right. But still
missing a crucial item. Please help me.
thanks and regards
Upadhya.

I dunno why your copy of this nice dist. screws up. I installed it and
everything went fine. I didn't use lnx4win, but i installed it by booting
from cd-rom. I have also installed it from dos using autoboot.bat.
I think your problems might come from lnx4win.
Just boot from cd-rom or use autoboot.bat from dos (remember to have cd-rom
drivers loaded it u use autoboot.bat)
Only problem i encountered was that Mandrake altered my extended dos partion
to linux extended partion and i couldn't accsess to it from windows. This
had simply solution. Just change the type of extended partion from linux to
win and everything is cool.
For my opinion, Mandrake is realy good dist. to workstation computer for
generic daily use. With right piece of hardware you can do everything on
Linux that you did in windows.
For right piece of hardware i mean right display adapter with right 3D.
(3DFX works better on Linux than other OpenGL boards. correct me if im wrong

Hello,
I too had this problem. The solution is to connect the
disk to secondary channel of the IDE0 slot.
RedHat linux can not address disk at IDE1 primary or IDE1 secondary
channel.
This is the known limitation with RedHat linux.
Hope this helps!.

Missing out a few steps I believe. Clues should come
from /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. After rebooting cat /proc/version
to /lib/modules/2.4.0-test8/.rhkmvtag then reboot again.
This should hopefully create your /lib/modules/2.4.0-test8/modules.dep
and load the necessary ones. You might also have to rename
your /etc/conf.modules to /etc/modules.conf.
Hope this helps.

RH7 comes with 2.2.16. You make modules_install overwrote what
was in /lib/modules/2.2.16 but did not delete the stuff you
do not need. Also your /lib/modules/2.2.16/modules.dep is
for the kernel that came with RH7, not what you compiled.
If you have no intention of using the RH7 kernel, delete
/lib/modules/2.2.16 and do make modules_install again.
Then reboot and do a depmod -a. This should clear things up.

Absolute newbie response-> tell disk druid that the new partition for
the / mount point should be 1 megabyte then check the box that says
"expand to fill available space" (or words to that effect). But the
other guy is right, if you don't put the linux partition below the
1024th cylinder, you can't use lilo to boot that partition so make a
boot disk or you'll go nowhere very slowly with lots of frustration.
PS I've only used redhat's disk druid. :)

I'm running RH 6.2 w/ 2 NIC's. One from Bell South w/ DSL and the other NIC
is for the internal network. I'd also like to bring in DSL from UUNET.
Both BellSouth and UUNET would each send their respective DSL lines into
their respective CPE DSL modem, and from there, into a separate NIC. I'd
like to add UUNET's xDSL to my current BellSouth DSL connection, and put it
into another NIC (NIC 3), in the same RH box, then run BGP4. Is this
possible? If so, how?

I was wondering if someone can help with a mount permissions problem.
I mount a vfat drive manually with the following command.
mount -t vfat -o users,uid=500,gid=500,umask=000 /dev/hda6 /mnt/data
I have also tried many similar versions of this command.
root has read/write access to the drive but User 500 gets a permission
denied for any write operation.
There has to be some way round this.
Any ideas?

What happened to it? You might have to use the -g option to alien so
that you can move files around in the package first, or maybe the -c
option to convert package installation scripts if you're confident - see
the alien man page.

Such problems can occur if you're freq/viewmode settings are incorrect. Try
to find a
XF86Config file for your board/screen. Lots of distributions have tools to

[ker-snap! Hideous error messages and other scary stuff...]
Something else which struck me when I first read your message was the
line:
"I choose linux and I get this error and the laptop freezes..."
Key word being 'laptop'. As far as I'm aware, laptop hardware support is
usually quite low-down on a devoloper's list of priorities, since many
laptop parts are vendor-specific. Also, in a direct quote from
Mandrake's website:
"MandrakeSoft is happy to announce the new Beta (Beta 3) of the
upcoming
7.2 release: Ulysses.
Please keep in mind that Ulysses is an experimental Operating System,
it's not for daily use! The goal of beta testing is to help debug it
and
Ulyssesn is sure to contain things that are broken. Use with care!"
So - you are now officially a beta tester. You accepted that things may
not work - and surprise-surprise - they don't. That is what being a beta
tester is about. Form a bug report, and then read:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/bugs/Reporting.html
and perhaps you should then send your bug to Mandrake. :-) Well done for
making the world a better place.
Now, for your actual problem. I would suggest you obtain a *stable*
release of Mandrake (currently 7.1), and try that. If that doesn't work,
read this 'Linux on Laptops' site and see if there is any specific
information on your particular make and model:
http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
That is about the best advice I can offer. :-)
Cheers,
Dave. :-)

Sure, it's possible - but it'll require the cooperation of each of the
providers. You'll have to coordinate with each one on who gives you
which routes. In short, yes, it's possible, but I wouldn't hold my breath
on getting it implemented.

the performance under X is a bit slow, more ram would help. There is a

I don't normally run X on this machine, but that is mostly because I

md5sum filename.iso
Check the place where you made the download, there's probably
a MD5SUMS file containing the correct values.

Running RedHat 7.0 on an ASUS P5A with a K6-2 450. Runs great, no problems.
I did have some problems initially til I got a proper cooling fan. That was
hardware, not Linux realted though.
