I compiled 2.4.0-test8 on Redhat7.0 and I got a bunch of the same messages
as the kernel compiled. The kernel did successfully compile and install, and
I'm running it with no problems.

Actually, Linux has this neat feature called TEQL, Im working on docs for it
right now and you should be able to find them on my website as soon as I get
them completed and get Alexey Kuznetsov's blessing. It will allow you to
bind multiple interfaces to look like a single interface and do load
balancing and link failover. The one trick, in this case, I would think
would be your DSL over your phone lines. Im not sure if multiple DSL modems
will talk over one phone line, and even if they will, I dont think you will
see any extra bandwidth. Of course if you are using multiple phone lines,
then this is not an issue.

Hi
I want to install a RH 6.0 on a server that has a SCSI controller
NCR53C895a. The module ncr53c8xx.o delivered with RH6.0 is the revision 3.1h
, that does not support the controller. I need the revision 3.2a2.
Is it possible to install RH 6.0 on the only hard scsi drive controlled by
this controller? And How?
using a floppy with the module on it?
using a network install?
using a temporary ide drive?
Any hint is appreciated.

I want to configure sendmail in linuxconf (or netconf), as I did in
RedHat 6.2... They seem to have taken that out as well. Bug or feature?

You could try booting Windows, opening the Multimedia->devices->card-
>settings screen and looking at the values Windows assigns and then
trying something like this:
/sbin/modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
/sbin/modprobe opl3 io=0x388
Except with your numbers in place.
Also helpful:
cat /dev/sndstat
cat /proc/devices
You will want to remove whatever the other card uses first.
"modprobe -r something" can remove the current sound setup, so you
can try again without rebooting. "modprobe -l" shows you things you
can remove.

That sounds very strange to me. Are you sure it is mounted with the
options you provide? Enter mount without any options to see if you
mounted it correctly. You do not even need the group/user id parts,
mounting with umask=000 wil make it world writeable. I really fail to
see why this doesn't do what you expect.

I doubt very seriously he could get multiple DSL accounts on the same
line. As a matter of fact, I know that won't work. The line is
physically attached to a DSLAM. Would require two lines to work at all.
BTW, when your TEQL stuff is ready could you post that, and if you think
of it email me. I am maintaining the DSL-HOWTO, and would like to put a
link, and maybe a FAQ on this topic for the next version.

There are two screen blankers, one for the text console and one for X11.
To control the text console blanker use the setterm command:
to set the blanker on the current virtual term, from the command line type:
setterm -blank 0 -store
where 0 is delay time in min., also see "man setterm"
To set all the Vterms (alt-F1 to F6) at boot add commands to
/etc/rc.d/rc.local using a pipe to write the setting
to each Vterm (screen) device file like this:
setterm -blank 0 -store > /dev/tty1
setterm -blank 0 -store > /dev/tty2
setterm -blank 0 -store > /dev/tty3
setterm -blank 0 -store > /dev/tty4
setterm -blank 0 -store > /dev/tty5
setterm -blank 0 -store > /dev/tty6
Hope this helps,
Bluster

First of all, get parted, and use it to free up some space on your disc
(approx 2 GB). Then put the RH disc in and install the linux OS (use
fdisk to create the linux partitions, diskdruid will complain about the
1024 Cyl. problem. You can solve this afterwards, or free up some space
below cyl 1024 too (~10 MB) where you can place /boot

Perhaps your right. lnx4win does sound like the culprit here. I have
installed LM 7.0 on another machine with no problems. That's why I came
back to put 7.1 on this laptop. I didn't have to use lnx4win last time.
So, I'll take your suggestion and try autoboot.bat and give that a shot
and post the results.
CORRECTION: lnx4win is a Piece Of Shit!! :)

Is it possible for me to upgrade from Red Hat 6.0 to Mandrake as an upgrade
rather than deleting everything on the disk?
If I upgrade and I don't select some packages that I selected in my original
installation, will these packages be removed?
Also, is there such a thing as an upgrade which keeps some directories (such
as /home and /usr/local) but otherwise deletes everything and reinstalls from
scratch? (I realize there might be some problems if the /usr/local stuff is
listed in the RPM database, or depends on libraries that were removed, etc.)

I recently installed RH6.2 and I wanted to upgrade the c++
compiler, so I went to
<ftp://ftp.freesoftware.com/pub/linux/redhat/current/i386/en/RedHat/RPMS/>
and downloaded gcc-2.96-54.i386.rpm and gcc-c++-2.96-54.i386.rpm .
But when I tried to install them, RPM said it handled major
version numbers only up to 3. Now naively, these *look* like
they have a major version number of 2. What's going on here?
This was the session:
[root@localhost GCC]# rpm -Uvh gcc-2.96-54.i386.rpm
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
error: gcc-2.96-54.i386.rpm cannot be installed

As others have pointed out, mpg123 is a command line app; however, if you
decide to keep it nad not go to xmms, you can use gqmpeg as a front end
which is quite nice and graphical. It does playlists, has lots of nice
skins, etc. There are also windowmaker dockapps for mpg123.

Configure scripts take lots of actions. You could probably tell configure
where to find the gnome libs. Check out running "configure --help |more"
and see what command line switch is available (or perhaps not) to get you

I have a E310 here serving up printing on my home network. The system that
its attached to is a Debian Potato desktop but I print from two win98 boxes
and a RedHat desktop as well. All I did was install the magicfilter package
and elect the postscript option and 600 dpi printing. Here is my
/etc/printcap:
lp|optra|optra 310e:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/optra:\
:sh:pw#80:pl#66:px#1440:mx#0:\
:if=/etc/magicfilter/psonly600-filter:\
:af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs:
There is a nifty little configuration script which I use with debian which
allows me to setup the printer. One difference is that I do not use lpr on
these boxes. I always run lprng. Under redhat, I could never get the lpd
daemon to send jobs to the debian box. I ripped out lpr and replaced it
with lprng which took a bit of time but now it prints quite well.
The E310 understands postscript quite well and it really does a nice job.

I had some of the same issues you are reporting with RedHat 6.2 with Xfree86
3.3.6 and a SiS 6326 card. For me, the problems centered on quality of
display, small vertical lines on the screen, etc. I finally got tired of it
and decided to upgrade Xfree86 to 4.0.1 since I had read somewhere that the
support for SiS cards was much better. I have no real upgrade options since
the card is on the motherboard and I only have one pci and one isa slot in
this particular system.
The upgrade to Xfree86 4.0.1 worked for me but I had to change a few things
and do a bit of detective work for XFS to get it running again. Be sure to
read the installation readme and visit Mandrake's website or check out
cautionary notes from the distribution vendor. For me, it took about 2
hours of messing with things like the font server, the new XF86Config file I
needed, etc.
The final result is that X runs quite well now. I have a working Xserver
which seems quite happy and works at a level where Gnome looks decent. I
don't use this box for a lot of X based things but its still nice to have it
working.

Do you have in.ftpd installed or did you install wuftpd? Do an "rpm -q wuftpd"
and see if its installed. If it is, edit the ftp line in /etc/inetd.conf
and change in.ftpd to wuftpd and kill HUP inetd and try again.
