On windows there are 3 ways of restarting a system. 1. shutdown the system
then restart the system. 2. Use restart in the shutdown menu. 3. In the
shutdown menu hold shift while clicking the OK to restart. The 3rd way is
a windows only shutdown. It only restarts windows. This is the fastest way
to restart. All hardware is by passed. Use this way when system settings
are changed ect.

If you are upgrading from 6.x to 7.0 and you did the default gnome or KDE
workstation install you will nee the second cd. I have done the upgrade
on 4 different systems and it asked for it every time. The second cd has
a lot of good stuff on it anyway that is not part of the default install.
So its worth the download for that reason alone!!

Subject: Re: slow?
Date: Tue, 3 Oct 2000 12:32:58 -0400

I recently installed Mandrake 7.1 on a 1 year old Dell Optiplex 500 MHz PIII
(the first machine I ever ran that took the doze out of Windows). I find
the graphics based programs that came with Mandrake (both KDE and Gnome)
rather slow-loading, 20 to 30 seconds and more sometimes (especially
Netscape!). Most commands executed at the command line are reasonably fast,
though loading a small file in emacs took longer than I thought it would.
My own non-expert guess is that some aspects of this version of Linux,
particularly the GUI based elements, are not fully optimized to exploit the
hardware. So do not expect miracles just from a hardware upgrade. I
suspect that the improved versions of KDE and gnome that are becoming
available may make some real difference.

I am trying to learn Linux in order to use emacs in a fully enabled unix
environment (as opposed to Windows versions of emacs), so I can wait for the
graphical stuff to become better optimized for speed. Right now the
graphical interfaces basically make it possible for me to get a system
installed and up and running without having to learn how to configure all
the tables and configuration files that need tweaking manually--that is
truly the most formidable aspect of unix-type systems for those of us who
are not primarily interested in computers for their own sake. If I had to
learn to do all of that myself, I would be forced to stay with Windows.

Cheers,
Jim Fitzgerald

Subject: RH6.0 installs, but won't boot - saga continues
Date: Tue, 03 Oct 2000 16:54:55 GMT

In our last episode:

I've got an older Pentium box with:
- GA-586AT motherboard (anyone know where to get manuals?)
- 32MB of RAM
- Trident 8900 VGA card
- 850MB Quantum drive (1647 cyl, 16 heads, 63 sectors)
- 3Com 3C509 Ethernet card

The BIOS offers four ways to see the disk: Normal, Large, LBA, and Auto. The
first two look the same, and the last two both report 823 cyl, 32 heads, 63
sectors.

Installing RH6.0 (several times) worked in each case, but the machine would
not boot. It would produce:

LILO boot:
Loading linux

at this point, it hangs and I have to press Reset or Power Off.

This week's episodes:

Blow away RH6.0, and install SuSE 6.1. No joy. It does the same thing as
RH6.0.

Recall that this machine was running Win98 when I bought it. Install a 425MB
drive, jumpered as Master. Set the 850MB drive as Slave. This way, says our
hero, there won't be any fuss with drive geometry.

Re-install SuSE 6.1 on the new drive. Same results. Re-install but select
the older kernel. Same results.

In frustration, install FreeBSD 3.1. Trickier (for never having done it
before), but it works! It boots up! It shows a login prompt!

So, it would seem that Linux is not compatible with my machine for some
reason. What do I look at next? Any suggestions received with (pathetic)
gratitude.

Kmod does not exist on the disk as a standalone program. It is included in
the kernel itselfand is not a separate process.

So if your kernel has kmod support (and it does in redhat 6.2), it will
start automagically...

I'm running SuSE 7 on a Dell PII. Attached is a Lexmark M410 postscript

After a reboot, the printer queue won't start automatically. A print job

#lpr .alias
#lpq
waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)
Rank Owner Job Files Total Size
1st     bvdeenen 112    .alias  55 bytes

but the printer is online.

now when I run the printer configuration module of yast2, the printer
queue starts, and the job prints immediately. I'm just starting and
quiting the printer configuration module of yast2, I'm not altering
anything!

#yast2 printconf
exit

the printjob is done
#lpq
no entries

Any tips on what's happening, and how to automate this process, so that
the printer is working without su access to yast2?

thanks

Here in the UK there are may ISPs' that support LINUX as well as MS and
Mac, and have many Linux users. Many of them only use Dynamically
assigned addresses, they all have however static DNS and these are the
ones that are used in the setup.

Well after much condemnation by users over the services
that are run from an initial install of RH, RH have
decided enough is enough. Now inetd is no longer used.
Xinetd is it's replacement. Look in /etc/xinetd.d for
the telnet file. If you don't have one, my default one
is below.

=====<include /etc/xinetd.d/telnet>======
# default: on
# description: The telnet server serves telnet sessions; it uses \
# unencrypted username/password pairs for authentication.
service telnet
{
        flags           = REUSE
        socket_type     = stream
        wait            = no
        user            = root
        server          = /usr/sbin/in.telnetd
        log_on_failure  += USERID
}
----<end include /etc/xinetd.d/telnet>------

Now made sure you have /usr/sbin/in.telnetd and restart
xinetd (/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart). as root.
