Hello,

I use an ADi MicroScan 6P Monitor, and a Microtek ScanMaker E3. The monitor
has been brightness/contrast (black-point/white-point) calibrated as per the
procedures given here:

http://www.aim-dtp.net/aim/index.htm

In answer to your question (reply):

The problem is not with my scanner, it is with my printer. The scanned input -
on screen - of the printed page from my inkjet printer looks very, very much
(almost exactly) like the printed page itself.

I have found a new "control image." I have also printed it out, and scanned it
back in. Perhaps these are better examples:

Set #3:

3A.) Source Graphic (Control Image):
     http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/screen-color-mix.gif

3B.) Printed Graphic (Scanned Image):
     http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/screen-color-mix-print.gif

Adjust your monitor so the Red, Green, and Blue areas in the Source Graphic
actually look red, green, and blue.

Then take a look at the Printed Graphic. Notice how the Red area actually
looks orange. The Green area appears a dark green, and the Blue area is a dark
blue. If I take the Source Graphic and print it, that is what it looks like...

I want to make the output from my printer match, as closely as possible, the
Source Graphic.

What is the cause? Too much yellow? Too much black? Not enough Magenta?
Etc...?

Thank You and Best Regards,
Kevin Adams

I have been trying to many, many installs of Mandrake 7.1 to my
machine here with moderate success. At one point I was installing
drakconf so that an icon appeared in X Windows and gave me a nice GUI
interface to drakconf so I could configure my machine. The last 3 or
4 installs have not had the drakconf icon in X Windows. I am doing an
expert install and figure I am just missing a package. Or perhaps
it's one of those downloading packages? Can anyone shed some light on
what I am doing wrong and what package or setting I need to fool with
to access the drakconf icon from X Windows?

I had this error too.It was something like.
"Cannot mount fs on 0707" or something like that.
The Lnx4Win is a much more fragile installation process than the one where
Linux has a partition all to itself.
My advise is don't use the Lnx4Win option choose the other one and let the
installer create a partition for Linux.

I had the same issue on a machine. There's an RPM called
"mandrake_desk-1.0.3-21mdk" on the install CD (/mnt/cdrom/Mandrake/RPMS).
If memory serves me right, that's the rpm you need to install to get all of
the stock links into your system. You *MAY* (I forget if I had to do this
or not) have to delete your user account (with the -r to remove the home
dir) and then re-add the user to rebuild your home dir.

Copying the compiled kernel to the right place would be a good thing
before rebooting. And possibly changing lilo.conf and run lilo.

This is a good place to start:

Subject: Can't seem to separate Backspace and Delete key operation.
Date: Fri, 06 Oct 2000 14:27:59 GMT

We are in the process of porting a large set of applications from SCO
Unix (OSR 5) to Redhat 6.2 Linux. The application contains a large
number of scripts written to run under ksh. We don't wish to change
to bash or another shell. All of our scripts run in an xterm window.
Traditionally, we have defined the Backspace key as the erase key and
the Delete key as the intr key. We would like to preserve this. We
are able to change the operation of Backspace and Delete such that both
keys produce an erase (of the last typed character) OR an interrupt.
We cannot manage to get the Backspace key to erase and the Delete key
to interrupt. We have read HOWTOS, usenet postings, and man pages to
no avail. Here is the information that we think is pertinent:

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/XTerm contains:

XTerm*ttymodes:erase^h
XTerm*ttymodes:intr^?
XTerm*ttymodes:kill^X

Now both the Backspace and Delete keys produce the desired erase

So how do we separate the Backspace and Delete operation?

I'm trying to upgrade a stock redhat7 machine to 2.2.17:
Here's exactly what I've done.

downloaded 2.2.17, and the idepatch.
cd /usr/src/linux
tar -czvf ~/oldkernelsourcebackup.tgz linux
rm -fR linux 2.2.16*
tar -xzvf ~/linux.2.2.17.tgz
cd linux
patch -p1 < ~/idepatch
edited Makefile to change:

CC=kgcc
#HOSTCC          =gcc
HOSTCC          =kgcc
#CC     =$(CROSS_COMPILE)cc -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)
CC =$(CROSS_COMPILE)kgcc -D__KERNEL__ -I$(HPATH)

make mrproper
make clean
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

cd /boot
cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.17
cp /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot/System.map-2.2.17
rm -f /boot/initrd-2.2.17.img
/sbin/mkinitrd initrd-2.2.17.img 2.2.17

mkinitrd dies here with

"No module aic7xxx found for kernel 2.2.17"

I had specified that aic7xxx be compiled directly into it:

CONFIG_SCSI_AHA152X=y
CONFIG_SCSI_AHA1542=y
CONFIG_SCSI_AHA1740=y
CONFIG_SCSI_AIC7XXX=y
CONFIG_AIC7XXX_TCQ_ON_BY_DEFAULT=y
CONFIG_AIC7XXX_CMDS_PER_DEVICE=8
CONFIG_AIC7XXX_PROC_STATS=y
CONFIG_AIC7XXX_RESET_DELAY=5

Ok, so I start over, specifying that it's compiled as a module.
(I really don't want this, /dev/sda1 is off the scsi card, but
I'll try anything at this point).

mkinitrd again dies here with

"No module aic7xxx found for kernel 2.2.17"

I've tried doing the make modules && make modules_install *both*
after the make bzImage and immediately before

/sbin/mkinitrd initrd-2.2.17.img 2.2.17

thinking that maybe I had to place the .img and system.map files
there while the modules were installed in /lib/modules.

Doing this didn't help - mkinitrd still complained.

Any suggestions?

Hello Again...  :-)

When I print using Windows 98SE, and the drivers as provided by Epson, I do not
have [most of] these color matching problems.

Under Windows 98SE, Red from the inkjet printer very closely matches the Red
area as depicted in the Source Graphic (Image #3A, c.f. URLs given below). In
general, Windows printouts are well-matched to the screen...

But under Linux, I need to make some adjustments to the Uniprint parameter
file; specifically, I need to modify the entries in the CYMK density table
listed at the beginning of this (Usenet) thread.

Compare the following; this time, a Windows 98SE printout is included:

Set #3:

3A.) Source Graphic (Control Image):
  http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/screen-color-mix.gif

3B.) Linux Printed Graphic (Scanned Image):
  http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/screen-color-mix-print.gif

3C.) Windows 98SE Printed Graphic (Scanned Image):
  http://www.netdotcom.com/kadams/photo/screen-color-mix-print-windows.gif

As you can see, the output from my printer using Windows 98SE (Image #3C) is
much more "screen-accurate" than the output from my printer using Linux (Image
#3B)...

So again, I know that I need to adjust the color densities for each of the
colors in the Linux Uniprint parameter file, I just don't know which colors,
and in which direction...

Thank You and Best Regards,
Kevin Adams

No, you can't delete root. To tell you the truth, I've never logged into X
as root (it's considered to be a big no-no) so I'm not sure how to help with
that other than this:

cp /etc/skel/Desktop/* /root/Desktop

the "skel" folder is the raw "template" (if you will) that gets copied to a
new user's $HOME when you add a new user.

If you are trying to use the DrakConf on the desktop as a user, you will be
prompted for root's password when you go to launch it, so you don't need to
be logged in as root to use it's offerings. And, after thinking about it
some more, you shouldn't HAVE to delete your user account to get this stuff.
Do the same copy as above for your user(s).

I am going to instal it on a 3700 this weekend, but I am putting it in
a different partition. I have heard too much in the way of bad things
about the instal and the operation to wipe what I have there.

On my Redhat 6.0 (with 2.2.17 updated kernel), I have never been able to get
the screen resolution to change with <ctrl><Alt><+ or ->. I understand this
is SUPPOSED to work, but doesn't.

Changing the default in the XF86Config file is the way to go if these simple
commands don't work.
