Why do that? I don't know how different "Corel Linux" is from Debian,
but on Debian, you should be able to type:
apt-get install xemacs21

A glibc upgrade is not a trivial thing. I always get the upgrade packages of
my distribution (SuSE).

Why don't you just install the Debian package? Corel includes only a small
subset of Debian, which as thousands of packages, including xemacs.

This happened to me as well, but only the first reboot after Installing
Corel Linux 1.1. Since I had a BootMagic Repair Disk, I simply inserted it,
added Corel to the Boot Menu, and it was fairly smooth sailing from there.
I now have on my 2 ten Gig HD's:
Win98
NT Workstation
Windows 2000 Professional
BeOS 5 Personal Edition
Corel Linux 1.1
Red Hat Linux 6.2

On RedHat type 'switchdesk gnome' to use GNOME and 'switchdesk kde' to
use KDE (or any desktop environment you have). If you are already in X
you will get nice graphical selection box.
Config file are ~/.Xclients and ~/.Xclients-default
'man switchdesk' will tell you more

Thanks all, for the quick replies. If I want to install a basic "Editor"
version of Xemacs21, which packages will I need from the Debian site? I'm
guessing this is the minimum:-
xemacs21-nomule_21.1.10-4.deb
xemacs21-support_21.1.10-4.deb
libc6_2.0.7.19981211-6.3_i386.deb
For starters, I want just Editing/Debug functionality (w/o Mule etc)
I'm just starting out with Debian Linux so thanks for bearing with my
newbie questions patiently.

Have you select more than one resolution from Xconfigurator? If not, then it
will not work because there is not any other resolution it could be changed

I downloaded the two main ISO's from Redhat twice, from a .gov site once and
from proaxd (or something). I tried the ISO's with three different writers
on win2k and win98. None of the ISO's gave any errors, and none of them
ever worked. No boot, not from boot floppy, can't look at them on a windows
system - nothing.
I will try to FTP down the entire mess and do an FTP install later on, or do
an FTP install over cable. Or buy it retail to get some CD's that work.

Gack! So the first thing you should do is run, don't walk, and
install the latest version of the gimp-print driver (which runs under
Ghostscript or directly in the GIMP as you prefer). It produces *way*
better output than the uniprint driver, plus has exactly the color
tuning "knobs" you want. There's no formal color management or
mapping as such yet, but at least the output is fairly good as is and
the knobs work usefully.

Hey.
I have a 20 Gb hda with Win98 on it. 6.4 Gb hdb with RH 6.0. I'm using
Lilo on the MBR to boot to Win or Red Hat. I'm trying to remove the 2nd
hard drive so I can put it into another box and have a dedicated Win box
and a dedicated Linux box.
I need to either 1) reconfigure Lilo to just boot to Win98 or 2) remove
Lilo altogether and somehow (don't know how) go back to the regular
Windows boot loader. I've looked at a few places that describe how to
do this, but I'm not sure what's best.
Any suggestions?

It's a problem. And... here's why.
It is convenient in a private net to allot every user their own UID.
That way, ownership of files over the net is maintained. Pick a simple
way to generate a new UID -- eg. employee number. Now, my employee
number is (say) 886192. And that would be my UID on Solaris, and
the Unix network. Now, bring Linux into the mix. By default, Linux
2.0 allowed you to use NIS to log into such a network, but would
reduce the UID modulo 65K (just take the low sixteen bits). You can
log on, but are a different user, and file ownership is an issue!
Linux 2.2 is a bit better?!?. IT WON'T LET YOU LOG ON. And that's a
serious hassle.
Of course, a single machine doesn't have that many users, but
a network may well.
Linux will have to grow up a bit more.
Ratboy.

Subject: CD-ROM causing segfaults?
Date: 6 Oct 2000 21:32:47 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Is that possible?
I've been having problems installing linuxes on a new box because every
installation has died with memory paging issues as far as I can tell.
I've been working on the assumption this is probably a memory problem, but I'm
testing that at the moment and nothing seems terribly wrong...
The test I've run is to md5sum a 249MB file (my main memory is 256MB) as I hear
this will stress the processor and RAM quite well... it passed with flying
colours.
Also I've run the checksum on a huge file (larger than main memory, to stress
swap presumably?)... with no problems.
Looking at "top" I'm seeing that almost *all* of my memory is used, yet the
percentages in the %MEM field are (0.4, 0.1, 0.1, 0.1, 0.0*)... how can all my
memory be gone in that case? Or is this just the way linux does things, I'm not
really sure?
So the only other thing I was wondering is, could my CD drive be causing the
problems? It also had issues with the Windows ME recovery disc (it just rebooted
the machine instead of doing anything useful)... it seems like another common
element in the problems.
So could a CDROM drive cause the kernel to have paging errors during install?
Seems unlikely...
Also, any other memory tests people can think of that might reveal a RAM fault?
Thanks,
PJ

This is the standard C++ library that goes with gcc-2.95(.2?). I believe
that all the RH 6.* versions are developed with egcs-1.1.* (gcc-2.95's
predecessor), and RH 7.0 with the never-released gcc-2.96. They may
provide this library for runtime purposes, however. On Debian, it is
packaged under the name "libstdc++2.10" (because the actual filename is
something like libstdc++-3-libc6.1-2-2.10.0.so--go figure ...), so try
looking for packages with similar names.
If you find the package, you should be able to install it using your
favorite package-management tool(s). It should not be necessary to remove
any _other_ versions of libstdc++ to accomplish that.

Hi,
That should be easy. If you're sure you're ready to not boot
to linux agian (except from floppy) then:
- boot to MSwindows then choose "Start->Shutdown" from the "Start Bar"
to open the "Shut Down Windows" dialog box
- in the "Shut Down Windows" dialog box select "Restart In MS-DOS Mode"
to exit Windows to a DOS prompt
- at the DOS "C:\>" or "C:\windows>" prompt type
C:\> fdisk /MBR
