Some similar messages are discussed in chapter 11 of Albitz & Liu 3rd
edition (the ORA book). Does the nameserver running on 127.0.0.1 know how
to map the numeric form 127.0.0.1 into the appropriate hostname
("localhost")? Remember that nslookup and the name server do not consult
the /etc/hosts file.

I have Mandrake 7.1 and an ancient AMS (Arima) 486/75 laptop. Apparently
I need PCMCIA support on the boot disk to get the installer to even be
aware of the PCMCIA CD-ROM, evidently an ATA/IDE CMF 20x CD-ROM.

I'd appreciate any suggestions, but prefer they remain anatomically
feasible. Thanks, all.

On disk 2, the ID (type) of the extended partition (Pcyl 0, entry 2)
is (hex) 05. This is an error, since the correct ID for an extended
partition ending cylinder 1024 or later is 0F.

I would not have expected this error to give the symptoms described,
but no other errors are present in the partition tables. You can
change the ID from 05 to 0F using the Linux fdisk t command.

Another option is to use ptedit from Powerquest. Then program can be
downloaded from ftp://ftp.powerquest.com/pub/utilities/

If you use ptedit, then note that only type 05 on the first screen for
the second disk should be changed to 0F.

Arg, linux newbie here with some problems setting up my cable modem with
dhcp. I have Mandrake 7.1. I type in "netconf" which takes me to the
network configurator. In "Basic Host Info" there is a "hostname +
domain" entry which is set to "localhost.localdomain".
Under the "adapter1" tab is the following info:
net device: eth0
kernel module: 3c509
irq: 10
ip: my ip
the dhcp radio button is selected

When I close out of netconf and tell is to activate changes I get an
error. Here it is:

Executing /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S10network reload:
    > Bringing up device eth0 Determining IP information for eth0 via
dhcp...faile
    > [FAILED]

And that's that. No internet connection. I've already read a couple of
how-to's (especially cable modem, dhcp mini-howto, and the ethernet
howto) and they didn't help.

I have a 3com Etherlink III (3c509B)

Any help is appreciated! Getting frustrated and wanting to switch back
to Winblowz.

I have all of this working fine, so here is my setup:

Basic Host information:
Host name + domain = localhost.localdomain (this can be anything you want)
    Adapter 1:
        Enabled = True
        Config mode = DHCP
        Net device = eth0
Kernal module = ne2k-pci (yours will be different)
        All other values = blank

Name Server specification:
DNS is required for normal usage = True
(leave all values blank, DHCP will pick this up for you)

Leave everything else as it is.

This should get you connected. If it doesn't, you should check with your
Cable provider that you network card address is registered with them (if
this is how they do it).

Hope this helps.

I run redhat linux 6.2, and use a dial up connection to connect to the
internet.
At the moment, I use a pppd script to do this. This part works ok.

I have noticed that When I launch Netscape (recently upgraded to 4.75)
without being connected to the internet, It seems to hang, and consume
95% of the cpu time, and becomes impossible to terminate, even as root,
and from closing down x windows, it is still there. The only way I know
to make it go away is to reboot.

It makes sense to me that I should be able to run Netscape with out
having an internet connection.
Is this some quirk about Netscape for Linux, or did something I set up
get broken.

Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Adaptec 2910 SCSI Card. The tape drive is the only scsi device and it

problem is this:

Whenever I try to use mt -f /dev/st0 status, I get:

SCSI 2 tape drive:
File number=-1, block number=-1, partition=0.
Tape block size 0 bytes. Density code 0x0 (default).
Soft error count since last status=0

Whenever I try any other mt command, ie. mt -f /dev/st0 rewind, I get:

If you still have use of your mouse you can "right click" on the X up in
the top right corner of the netscape window to close it.

You can also do a "killall netscape" from a command line to close it.

Have you checked to see if the kernel was compiled with IP Masq
support? Or is that still necessary on RH7?

What did you use to resize that partition? If you tried using an
ordinary FDISK program, you may have trashed it. If you used Partition
Magic or the like, it SHOULD be OK, but it's possible that WinNT/2K has
gotten confused. (It sometimes does that when a partitioning scheme is
changed on it.)

Check in Linux fdisk what the partition type code is for the partition.
It should be 07, which is the code for NTFS. If it's not, change it to
NTFS. Note you should change the NTFS partition's code to this, not
something else (like a Linux partition).

One other thing you might try doing is this:

1) Mount the NTFS partition in Linux. (I'm not sure offhand if Mandrake
includes NTFS support out of the box; if not, you'll need to
   recompile your kernel.)
2) Copy all the files from the NTFS partition to whatever sort of
partition or medium is convenient. Be sure it's something that's
readable from Windows NT/2K, though, like a FAT partition or a
   FAT-formatted Zip disk.
3) In Windows NT/2K, delete the NTFS partition and then create a new one
   using Disk Administrator.
4) Format the new partition as NTFS.
5) Copy the files back to the partition.

Netscape is likely working on loading your "Home Page" from the net.
I have my netscape "Home page" set to an image file (of a painting)
on my system to avoid that.

If your keyboard works when netscape hangs then you can press
CTRL-ATL-F1 to switch to a text terminal, log in and type

[bluster@zephyr]$ killall -9 netscape-communicator

to kill netscape. Then ALT-F7 to return to the X11 screen.
