All that and I forgot to mention that when the Xserver program
(/etc/X11/X) starts it looks at the /etc/X11/XF86Config file
for hardware settings, (e.g. screen, mouse, keyboard type, etc.)
though startx doesn't realy handle that part.

It appears that it's Adabas, not Ababas. The StarOffice install
program promised that I could download Adabas. So I went to
the site and they have it for a bunch of platforms, including
SuSE Linux, but not RedHat. Any idea if the SuSE version will
work on RedHat as well?

Linux Gurus:

I have an odd problem. I have a machine (Compaq) with a 10G disk
that has been partitioned with hda1 as Win98, hda2 as Linux swap,
and hda3 as Linux native.

The Linux is Caldera 2.4. While in windows something odd happened
and it went out to lunch (stupid MS). Upon rebooting, the error of
"no operating system" is obtained. I assume this means that the
problem is LILO has gotten corrupted.

Attempting to boot with the Linux Rescue floppy yeilds an error:
"Kernel panic unable to mount root fs on 03:03"

I am guessing that perhaps the file system may need to be checked
before mounting (ie run fsck). How do I recover and get around this
problem? I have tried copying fsck to the boot floppy (on a different
system), but when I run in in the boot shell, I get segmentation fault.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hi Martin,

if you look in /usr/bin or /usr/sbin you should be able to find the grub
program. You just have to execute that and use it to reinstall the grub
loader to your MBR.
I'm a bit hazy about the exact location, because although I've got grub on
my linux machine, it's not down at the moment so I can't check. So if you
still have problems tomorrow post again.

Cheers,

Martin.

rerun /sbin/lilo after you made changes to the lilo.conf?
LILO is only rewritten when you do this, otherwise the changes take no
effect.
(You have to create some sort of a BIOS executable (by running
/sbin/lilo), since the lilo.conf file isn't read on runtime)

I had this when I switched from XFree86-3.x to 4.
Turned out you need the fontpath where this fixed font is defined as the
first fontpath listed. This path is on my PC

/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias

in this fonts.alias the fixed-font is defined (take a look at this
file's content)

How you ensure it's the first with xfstt I don't know. With XFree86-4,
which renders it's own fonts, it just has to be the first line in the
Fonts section in /etc/X11/XF86Config

Hey!

I have for some days now tried to connect to my ISP thrugh an ordinary
(proper) modem. In the Gnome/Enligtenment GUI I find the modem in a program
called internet connection. Its placed on /dev/ttyS0 and when I hit the
debug button it dials-up fine (that is, I hear the usual noise). But then
the show stops, and nothing more happens. The program says pppd has died
(exit code = 1).

When I look in /var/log/messages it says

pppd[28662]:the remote system (ppp2) is required to authenticate itself but
I couldnt find any suitable secret (password) for it to do so
ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp2 on /dev/ttyS0 at 115200
modprope: cant locate module char-major-108

These 3 lines are apparently repeated in the log-file for as long as I try
to connect.

The OS is RH 6.1 and I had everything up and running 6 months ago, but I
just cant remember what to do to get the modem working!!

Any help will be much appreciated

Are you certain that the "no operating system" message begins with a
lower case n? What is the exact message?

Well, if it is "Missing operating system" this is an error message
from a standard DOS MBR, when no boot signature is present in the
active partition. Then there is a chance that the Windows boot problem
is as simple as setting hda1 active using DOS fdisk.

You have the option to get Findpart at

http://inet.uni2.dk/~svolaf/utilities.htm

do

findpart all +fat fp.txt

and post the content from fp.txt.
