I recently installed RH6.2 and had a "mysterious" modem problem,
also. As it turned out, the permissions on /dev/ttyS2 were not setup
correctly! Fixed this, and then everything was fine...

If you want to make *REAL* money in Linux, write "the perfect application"
under Linux and then sell that "solution" (hardware, OS, software,
installation and support) to a bunch of businesses for lots of $$$ A
business will pay lots of $$$ for a solution. they won't pay much for a box
or an OS or software in a box. That is what Gates has done for us ... but
offer them a solution and they will throw money at you! ... (just my
opinion, of course <wink>)

your detailed response is much appreciated. it looks like there's
enough there to get me headed swiftly in the right direction.
i was browsing (read 'researching') at a bookstore last night, hoping
maybe to get some more information for solving my problem before i get
home on friday. while there, i saw several various 'desktop
references' pertaining to linux... i didn't get a chance to truly
compare them all, as i was soon distracted, but i was wondering if
anyone could recommend a good one. one that i did look at looked
mostly like a command reference... skimpy index, so if you didn't know
the command you were looking for, it wasn't going to be a quick
process to find it there.

actually, i'm a vegetarian ... and i'm not at all sure i'm interested
in the process of making tofu :-)
however, i'll be heading from the states to london in december, so i
may try the much-fabled 'fish n chips' yet. i'll be in edinburgh,
too, but i think i'll pass on the hagis :-) (had the veggie hagis (and
yes, i know that's an oxymoron) the last time there, and it was
surprisingly tasty).
enough of the ot ...
thanks again, i'll post a follow-up with my success story this weekend

BACKGROUND: I need libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 in order to run
Mozilla. The only copy of this lib that I've found for RH6.2 is in a
package w/ some other lib files. When I test this package, however, I
get a msg saying there is a conflict with a file belonging to some
already-installed packages (libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.so).
MY QUESTIONS: 1. Is there any way to extract only the file I need from
the package? 2. Or, is it safe to overwrite a conflicting lib file --
maybe it's identical? 3. Is rpm reversible in the following sense: if
I made a backup copy of the file that was going to be overwritten, and
then forced the install, will I be able to reverse the steps in case
things go wrong?

Subject: Fast Track Raid 66 Controller
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 23:16:27 +0200
Hi Everyone
I have bought a Promise Fast Track Raid IDE 66 controller, because I want to
setup 2x60mb harddrives as a raid drive. When I connected the controller to
my computer Linux would'nt boot. It said that it could'nt find the irq of
the controller, and that it would probe it later, then it found the other
IDE drives and then just stopped. The controller is ok, I tried it in a
windows machine and it worked fine. I use Linux RedHat 6.1 with kernel
2.2.16-3(because of the large harddrives). I'm using one of the 60mb drives
now as a normal IDE drive and it works fine, so its proberly not a problem
with the drives either.
Bios tells me that the controller uses irq 9 and I cannot find anything else
which uses that irq, so its proberly not a irq conflict. However bios cannot
determinate the irq of my graphiccard(a very very old one) so its possible
there is a conflict between the controller and the graphiccard.
So if anyone knows how to find out the irq of a graphiccard I would very
much like to know.
And if you've had a similar problem with the Fast Track controller or got it
to work I would like to hear from you also.
Sincerely
Peter Aagaard Kristensen

Linksys BEFSR41, SuSE 7.0, and Netscape 4.73. The router asks for the
password 4 times before letting me in, then when I change the password
away from the default and click Apply, nothing happens, no Continue, no
nothing. If I close the browser and go back into the router, it still
has the old password. I can change the data on the Setup page and the
same thing happens. If I change something else, like the filters, the
Apply button seems to work and Continue comes up. Same thing happens
using konqueror, so it isn't the browser. I've searched and found a few
other people looking for a solution to this problem, so it isn't unique
to my router; but I have yet to find an answer. I tried turning PnPOS
both off and on in the BIOS, as someone suggested, but to no avail.
Anybody been through this and have a solution?

Not sure if this'll help, but check that in /etc/inetd.conf, the line with
'ftp' isn't commented out.
Also maybe u should look at /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/ftphosts to make sure
they are configured properly (Do this on the machine u are ftping to).

Does the conflicting file come from a previous version of the RPM you
are installing?
If so, use
rpm -Uvh new-rpm-name
to upgrade the RPM.
If not, then there's something odd going on.. You can extract the RPM
into a temporary space, using the facility to extract it using a
directory as the root rather than /
To extract it to /tmp, you have to make /tmp/var/lib/rpm and touch a
file packages.rpm in that, then use the --root switch.
check the doco at www.rpm.org for details.

I have already tried this to no avail.
I have de-activated gdm by allowing the boot process to proceed to

I'm having some problems setting up sound on my machine. The sound card

es1371: version v0.22 time 09:53:39 Jun 25 2000
es1371: found chip, vendor id 0x1274 device id 0x1371 revision 0x08

es1371: codec vendor TRA (0x545241) revision 35 (0x23)
es1371: codec features none
es1371: stereo enhancement: no 3D stereo enhancement
When I attempt to play some sound, eg. 'play something.wav', the first
few seconds of sound work correctly, but then the machine crashes, and I
have to use the reset button.
Is anyone using this card successfully? I'm using Debian 2.2.

I am vaguely remembering RH released a special boot image disk for
ATA/66 boards. I am not sure what controller this supported but you
