Somebody must be seen this..

We have:
    - RedHat 7.0 (the same with 6.2)
        - xinetd (inetd in 6.2)
        - imap (used only for POP3)

While userxx's mailbox /var/spool/mail/userxx is empty (0 bytes),
POP3 client (Netscape)runs very quick (immediately). Since there is
something in that file (e.g., only system message "DO NOT DELETE THIS
MESSAGE"), POP3 client stay for 2-3 seconds with
"Host contacted: Sending login information".
The same symptoms with pine working on server directly (POP3 cannot
disturb):if /var/spool/mail/userxx is empty, pine open inbox very
fast, if not - waiting for ~2sec.
    The problem described above does not affects root.

Where could be a solution for such delay?

Thanks in advance,
Arnis

Well you may do

$ cat /proc/modules

and

$ cat /proc/sound

Hope this helps,

Hi all,

I want to run linux on an embedded 386 or 486 board
with solid-state hard-disk, one floppy drive, and a
vga screen.

Is there a good book or something that describes
what minimum linux components are needed and how
to set it up?

              If you want to do a hot backup, there are general
instructions in some of the fault tolerant how-tos. You can, for
example, have the third machine listen on the net and take over when
one of the other machines goes down. This approach requires a
somewhat sophisticated sysadmin to set up.
            If you want to do it manually, uhm, just clone the
swappable drives.

There are distributions and things for that kind of work.

feeding "embedded linux" into www.google.com will get you

I don't know why It does this, but if you say "cleanup cache" it just
removes the links to it from the index.db file...
I allow max 10 mb cache.
                        before after (cleanup cache, all sizes in kb)

said by about:cache:    +-7900    0
du cache:               +-70000    +-63000

so it removes some files, I think that all files from all crashes aren't
removed.... A cron-job would be best here...

btw try about:cache, about:image-cache & about:memory-cache...

I used xmodmap -e "<stuff>" to set up my alt and meta keys as I wanted
them. I created a .xmodmaprc file to save these settings:

$ cat ~/.xmodmaprc
keycode 113 = Alt_R
keycode 116 = Meta_R
add mod1 = Alt_R
add mod4 = Meta_R

Now how do I get these settings to automatically take effect each time
I start X?

My machine boots into X and I use gdm as my login manager. I do not
have a .xinitrc file in general; I like to use different window
manager/desktop setups as the mood takes me and gdm allow me to do
this. I tried creating a .xinitrc file which contained just the single
line:

xmodmap ~/.xmodmaprc

but this did not work. Could comebody let me know how I can do what I'm
after---I'm sure it is dead simple but it seems to be eluding me.

Best,

Darren

Well, now LILO freezes at LIL
here are my partition table that I wrangle out with fdisk and some
redirection ...
Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 784 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System

hda3 looks very suspicious! My fstab is as follows
/dev/hda2               /dos                    vfat    defaults

/dev/hda6         /                 ext2    defaults        1 1

/dev/hda8         swap              swap    defaults        0 0
/dev/fd0          /mnt/floppy       ext2    noauto          0 0

none              /dev/pts          devpts  mode=0622       0 0

lilo.conf and fstab looks in proper order. Lili.conf is as follows.
boot=/dev/hda6
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
other=/dev/hda1
        label=win95
        table=/dev/hda
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.5-15
        label=linux
        root=/dev/hda6
        read-only

Hope someone can help me to figure the partition table out.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Installation of PHP 4.0.3

Hello,

I want to use the following softwares :
 - apache-1.3.12,
 - php-4.0.12 like an apache static module,
 - mysql-3.23.25.beta (at www.mysql.com, it's the only source files that
I can download).

I read advices from :
 - newsgroups about linux et php
 - README INSTALL files of these software
 - FAQs of www.php.net  www.phpindex.net
And PHP doesn't work at all.

Then :
 - mysql works well,
 - apache works not well : for html files no problems, for php files it
doesn't work.
 - php : It 's a black hole.

I create the "test.php" file with <? phpinfo() ?> in
/the/path/ofapache/htdocs, and when I want to launch it from Netscape,
Netscape ask me where I want to save it !!

Where did I make a mistake ?

If someone can help me, thanks.

Best regards,

Jean-Stphane Lebrun

PS : This is my way to install these software on a Linux Mandrake 7.0.

1. The installation of de MySQL 3.23.25 beta

# cd /usr/src
# gunzip mysql-3.23.25-beta.tar.gz | tar xvf -
# cd / usr/src/mysql-3.23.25-beta
# ./configure
# make
# make install

I check the /etc/ld.so.conf file for the presence of :
/usr/local/lib/mysql

2. The first installation of apache 1.3.12

# cd /usr/src
# gunzip apache_1.3.12.tar.gz |tar xvf -
# cd /usr/src/apache_1.3.12
# ./configure --prefix==/usr/local/apache

3. The installation of php 4.0.3

# gunzip php-4.0.3.tar.gz | tar xvf -
# cd /usr/src/php-4.0.3
# ./configure --with-mysql --with-apache=../apache_3.1.12
   --enable-track-vars
# make
# make install

4. The second installation of apache 1.3.12

# cd /usr/src/apache_1.3.12
# ./configure --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a
# make
# make install

5. In the file "/usr/local/apache/conf/httpd.conf"

I add :
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

6. The php.ini file

cp /usr/src/php-4.0.3/php.ini-dist /usr/local/lib/php.ini

7. Restart of d'apache

/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl graceful

And PHP do not work at all !!!!!!!

I have noticed the same thing, but only on pine (I am using cucipop as a
pop3 client). But in pine, for non-root users there is definitely a
~2sec delay when opening a non-empty inbox. I couldn't figure this one
out. Any suggestions as to the reason?

I think that will only put it there if it is an rpm. You might want to have
a look at http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/NByName.html and install either 4.74.
or 4.75. It's a big download, but that would fix the problem.

When you try to install the plugger rpm, is it just giving you an error
about needing netscape? If so, you can try it with

rpm -ivh --nodeps filename.rpm

I don't know if the install you did would have put the netscape files in the
same place as an rpm. I'd try the nodeps install of the plugger first. You
might also be able to find that rpm as a tarball and install it that way
like you did netscape. Then if those don't work, you can get the rpm. You
will have to remove what you have installed before installing the other or
when you run 'netscape' you may still get the currently installed version.

I have the same motherboard as you do.
Normally when you get a busy signal it is because IRQ conflicts, do a
cat /proc/pci and check to see if your having any IRQ conflicts.
Also if you don't have any external serial devices hooked onto your
your motherboard, go into the BIOS setup and diable those serial ports
that isn't being used and you can free up extra IRQ's you can use.
also move the music board to different slots on your motherboard ,
the reason I went to this motherboard was because of the 6 pci slots.
I use a ps/2 mouse instead of a serial mouse
