What are you using as a command?

mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

Have you looked at the CD with another operating system to make sure that
it is okay?

Check http://www.linmodems.org to see if there is a workaround for this
modem.

`man isapnp' and `man isapnp.conf' to learn how to use these tools. They
only do what you tell 'em to do. Don't tell 'em to do anything and they
won't. Look in /usr/doc for more info on isapnp.

Then don't. Figure out what's what first. One step at a time.

You have plug-n-pray hardware. isapnp is for configuring ISA based pnp
hardware. Are these PCI or ISA based hardware?

  cat /proc/interrupts

and

  cat /proc/ioports

will show what hardware is using which interrupts (IRQs) and IO ranges.
You can also get this info from win98 by ControlPanel->System. See which
IRQs and IO ranges win98 says is using those pieces of hardware. Then
fire up Linux and run the above cat commands. See if you have any
conflicts.

Email me if you do.

A friend of mine who has a cable modem tells me that occasionally due to
cable modem buffering errors (hardware) he has to disconnect the cable
modem and switch it off/on. Have you ever used this particular cable
modem on (e.g.) a Windows machine without the same problem?

You can use mc to look into and extract individual files from an rpm archive.

>2. Or, is it safe to overwrite a conflicting lib file maybe it's identical?

I would not overwrite your libstdc++-libc6.1-2.so.3 file, or change any links
to it.
If all you need is libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.9.0.so, then I would just copy it to
/usr/lib and any links in the rpm. i.e. the rpm will contain the actual file
and links to it like 'libstdc++-2-libc6.1-1-2.' or something.
Then you should run /sbin/ldconfig as root.

All of 'em actually. But you need to configure your smtp server for
each. In nutscrape use edit->preferences->Mail&Newsgroups->MailServers.
Edit what's there or add your ISPs smtp server. Usually it's something
like

 mail.MyISP.com

They should have it posted on their site with the technical stuff.

This can also be configured in Pine and kmail.

My guess would be that the file you are trying to run is a script, and it is
looking for a file, and not finding it. i.e. the error message refers to some
file other than the one you are running. If this is so you need to open
lmhostid with a text editor and look for the file refered to in it.

If it is not a script it may still be looking for some file in the wrong place.
Maybe there's some environment problem.

Maybe you could just uninstall and then reinstall the program, that does work
sometimes.

Hope this helps.

If the current kernel was compiled on you machine then the file
/usr/src/linux/.config is the file to look at. That is if you haven't run
"make mrproper", which deletes this file. Note that this is the config of the
kernel last configured, not of the current running kernel.

What program are you using for your ppp connection? Why can't you hit the
"disconnect" button instead of the "X" button? If you can't handle using the
disconnect, then do a "ps ax", and then "kill" the pid for pppd.

No, not the whole enchilada, but at least the command line side.

Here's the trouble. I would like to use the RH PCMCIA boot disk to boot
the install program, using a Linksys PCMCIA 10Base100 LAN card. I have
a home network with a linux server that I could allow the CD-ROM to be
shared on then install from there.

The problem is that I am getting a "Boot Failure" when the PCMCIA boot
disk loads, but that disk has booted just fine on my wife's modern
laptop. The standard RH 6.2 boot disk boots on this 1960 just fine, but
ends with a Kernel Panic as there is nothing on the disks. The machine
is a 486/25MHz with 20 Mb of RAM.

Any tips would be very helpful. I have already found the Linux Laptop
site, however.

You don't mount a swap partition, it is not part of the file system.

What error messages did you get from swapon ?

The system init files will activate the swap space, specifically
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. You just need to make sure the swap space is valid,
and that /etc/fstab has the correct device. Look at 'man mkswap', 'man fdisk',
and 'man swapon'

During my testing I connected to cable modem directly to a Win98 PC and it
worked fine. I was able to download 1 or 2 GB worth of data from the
Internet (several different ftp sites).

That is what make this problem so wired. It works when connected directly to
a Win9x, NT, 2K PC but not with a Linux PC

Any suggestions?

One thing that puts me off wrt SuSE us that there's no version information in
the rpm file names; I can't see what version of sendmail's in sendmail.rpm. Nor
can I download rpms for different versions of SuSE rpms into the same
