Well, I removed an unnecessary card in my system and the ALSA drivers

How embarrassing 8-}. Now I am SB Live-ed...

Try the ALSA drivers.

Moral: Don't install strange cards.

Reply-To: Erik Max Francis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I have an old RIVA TNT that I'd like to get running with
hardware-accelerated OpenGL so that I can experiment. Unfortunately, I
haven't had much luck getting it working. I upgraded binutils to 5.10
(since I run SMP), then I upgraded to XFree86 4.0.1, installed the
NVIDIA kernel drives and then the GLX modules and libraries. Nothing
happened (that is, everything still ran slow). I looked in the FAQ,
where it suggested eliminating references to libMesaGL, which I did (by
pointing libMesaGL -> libGL), at which point running a simple OpenGL app
(I chose /usr/lib/Mesa/samples/wave, which works fine, albeit slowly,
with Mesa only) caused the entire screen to blank. Everything's still
running, the machine is still alive, it's just that the screen is blank
from that point on. Only rebooting makes the screen come back (at least
that I could tell; killing X didn't do anything).

I checked in the TNT readme in the GLX package, and it suggested looking
up the type of memory in the card and hacking that into the kernel
module and reinstalling, which I did, and still no luck -- the screen
still hangs.

Any ideas what the problem is? Am I doing the right stuff, but it just
may be that I have one of the RIVA TNTs that doesn't work properly (the
TNT readme in GLX warned of this)?

Have any of you seen this? If so, do you know how to fix it?

During the install RH6.2 will give you a dialogue box for network info.
Just check the DHCP box and everything else will grey out. Worked for
me the first time. If you have already installed RH6.2, you can
"linuxconf" from the root command line.

I installed a Slackware (7.0?) last week and it recognized the network
card and DHCP without ever prompting for info. Pretty slick.

Firstly, you should install the latest package which is NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-5.
Then you also need to install NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-5, which replaces some XFree86
files. You also need to change your /etc/X11/xf86config file. And I think
you must upgrade to xfree86-4.0.1 also. All the documentation is here
http://www.nvidia.com/Products/Drivers.nsf/Linux.html

After you have done everything correctly you will see a *huge* difference in
performance, but not with a plain old X session. Try running some 3D software
to see the difference. The performance boost is worth the effort.

Subject: ppp problem
Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2000 05:17:09 GMT

I need some help with this...for the last several months I have
dealt with my ppp connection slowing *way* down while trying to load pages
and/or download (from 52000 to about 300). I've played with the
/ppp/options file (changing both the hardware flow control and the MRU) and
even swapped out modems. I'm stumped.

In the meantime, I *have* learned the following about the problem:

        1. It seems that when the problem occurs with Netscape, whatever
Netscape is loading becomes jumbled with other things that it might be
doing, like loading advertisments and such (like it is overloaded).

        2. The problem also occurs with newsreaders and FTP programs..even
dropping carrier in some instances.

        3. This part is odd: I use Balsa as my e-mailer. If I am having
the problem with any of the above, starting Balsa seems to 'kick start' the
connection, making it jump from <1000 to over 4000. This, however, is
temporary as shortly after this the connection slows back down to
<1000--sometimes within 30 seconds (often about 2 minutes, though). When
it slows down, I close Balsa, wait 10 seconds, and restart it. Once again,
the connection is kickstarted.

What is the problem? I have not been able to download major
programs (like the latest Netscape) as the connection slows way down and/or
drops carrier. Not to mention the problem of doing online transactions...

        Thanx for your help.

This is actually a bit extreme - if you can work out which packages have been
worked over, you can do a forced install of those packages from the
distribution - much less hassle!

>Then goto updates.redhat.com and grab and install *all* the fixes

And that's the next step, along with wiping out any/all spurious user accounts,
and forcing password changes across the board.

Also check for plain-text passwords to other machines in you LAN, and change
them, and check any root-peered machines as well.

More good advice. In fact, get rid of anything that is not needed for it to
run. If nothing else, it makes life easier when you want to see what is going
on when they hack you next time! And get rid of any ports/daemons that you
don't need as well. Also, if you're really serious, log the traffic logs and
messages to a separate machine, via a one-way link, like a serial port. Or to
paper.

Don't know portsentry - could you enlighten us?

:-) But you are right, there is no "magic bullet" - as the old saw goes, the
price of freedom (of having a safe machine) is eternal vigilence. Modify,
maintain, monitor. Constantly.

Yeah, I was just about to post a similar response. I found
this...Windows is dumb. Even if a computer is directly connected to
it, it cannot ping it unless it is running a know protocol, aka SMB.
I got my two computers (windows me and linux) hooked together, but in
the beginning it would only work sometimes and I wouldn't know why.
If you issue the following command as root

/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start

you will start your samba services and then voila, the linux machine
will show up in your network neighborhood. You should then edit

/etc/rc.d/rc.local

and add the above line to the beginning of that file so that it will
start on boot up. Hope it helps! Write back if it doesn't. Feel

please tell me if you are successful, I learn when other people have

Forget about netzero. Do the following. Get an address.com free
internet account and then hack the password, then you can use it like
a regular dialup. The program that you use is...rasspy...go to
http://www.geocities.com/daveinfopage/palmpilot_freeISP.html
to read all about it. I know it works with address.com (SPINWAY)
since I have been using it for quite some time now. I don't know how
long it will work, but just remember, Netzero are bitches (they
actually have a Linux client out but won't release it), so go with
spinway anyway. You need a windoze computer to run it (you don't need
winNT, I did it on win98) just to get the username and password (a one
time thing) and then you are in. Enjoy!

Just to update everyone who replied and not leave them hanging, I was
able to fix all my problems. Since I am the sole user on my machine
and it is a home network, I did

chmod a+s /usr/bin/smbmnt
chmod a+s /usr/bin/smbumount

And then added

/etc/rc.d/init.d/smb start

to the first line of

/etc/rc.d/rc.local

file, so that smb started under a higher level at boot

and everything works grand! I can mount and unmount (which does not
affect the configuration) as user and I realize the benefits of the
security. Thanks for all the advice!!

I ran across your description while searching for a possible
explanation to a very similar problem. I recently made an old
486 into a linux firewall/router for my cable modem connection (I am on
@home). I have been having the exact same problem as you describe.

I am running Mandrake 7.0 with 2 ne2000 ISA cards. The symptom I have is,
after using the browser on my PC (par t of my internal network), the
connection seems to "hang". I can find no usage pattern that causes this to
happen or accelerates the problem, other than it occurs when I am actively
browsing (as opposed to it happening when the machines are sitting
idle.)Here's what I have discovered so far when the connection hangs:

1) I cannot ping to the outside world from either my linux box or my PC.

2) I can ping both the internal (192.168.1.1) and external address from both
the linux and PC.

3) If I try to telnet (or ftp) from my PC into my linux box, I make the
connection (and see the connection in the syslog), but I do not get the
login prompt (i.e., nothing is sent back to the PC). (I find this very,
very strange and kind of annoying, since I have to go find a keyboard to
connect to the linux box again.)

4) Restarting the network will not help: the DHCP request from my linux box
times out. Rebooting the linux box does not help. Same problem. The ONLY
way to get back is to unplug my cable modem (I have an RCA modem) and plug
it back in (simply turning it on and off with the power switch doesn't help;
I believe that unplugging this particular modem causes it to reinitialize
itself.)

I called ATT support this morning, and they claim that my cable modem itself
is pingable and that the problem is something with my machine. And, since
they don't support linux, I'm on my own. =)

I have searched through the various HOWTOs and FAQs looking for anything
related to this and have been unsucessful. I have played with my IPCHAINS
commands to see if they were the problem. Nothing I can think of has helped
solve the problem.

And, like you describe, my connection worked fine for a long time when the
modem directly connected to my PC.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I've gotten quite tired of
unplugging my cable modem and restarting my network.
