Thanks. It is odd because scsi_info can suck the IDs out of the drive, so
the comms can't be bad.
What I think I need is the data to feed stinit. HP's support site was
useless.

We clipped too much. The original poster did "file" on the file
and file said it was ELF 32-bit LSB etc. So it isn't a script.

Subject: Multiple problems
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 02:07:04 GMT
I ran RH6.0 and 6.2 on my old Cyrix system and liked it very much
until the processor died. I now have the folowing system:
AMD Athlon 950 (TB)
Asus A7V MB (with Promise ATA-100 controller)
ATA-100 30GB HDD connected to the Promise controller (Boots into
Windoze 98)
ATA-33 8.4GB HDD connected to main primary IDE controller (Linux
loaded on this drive booted from floppy)
CD-ROM and CD-RW connected to main secondary IDE controller
USB keyboard with Logitech mouse on keyboard hub
Ethernet card, SB Live sound card, Voodoo 3 Video card (all working
fine0
Cable modem connected to Comcast @home network
I have installed RH (6.2 and 7.0), Suse 7.0, Corel and BestLinux (it
was there) on the smaller HD. Presently I have Suse running.
The problems:
1.None of these distributions recognize the ATA-100 disk (this was not
unexpected)
2.Only Suse will recognize my USB keyboard and mouse (it allows me to
change usbcore settings before initial reboot)
3.Once installed, Netscape installs fine and connects through my cable
modem fine, but will not connect to mail or news server. I have them
set up as I did on the old system, which worked fine.
4. Trying to set up XCDRoast by adding ide-scsi as a module. XCDRoast
sees the CD's correctly in setup, but whenever I try to access one of
them, the program crashes.
I know this is a lot of questions for one post, but, I figure I might
as well show all my ignorance at once.
I would appreciate any help you may have.
Thanks
Darrell

Actually, I have done WINNT and RedHat at the same time on one system, yet
had Linux install LILO on the MBR. This is OK in the case where Linux sees
the FAT16 partition where WinNT's system files are located. Therefore, when
you boot your computer, you should see: LILO: and press tab to see
linux dos
Type linux to boot linux, and type dos to boot the "dos" partition, which in
turn boots the NT loader. However, I just successfully installed Win98,
Win2000, and RedHat7 all on one 30GB drive, using the Win2k OS loader as my
selecter. I did this by installing LILO on the root partition (so in my
lilo.conf, boot= and root= point to the same /dev/hdaX). Then I ran LILO to
make sure it was installed on " / " and to see if any errors happened. THen
I just used "dd" to copy the bootsector to a floppy, and had the entry for
Linux in my boot.ini in windows point to the bootsector file I copied (i
called it bootsect.lnx). I ran into initial problems running lilo to
install on the root to begin with, since my Linux partitions were WAY past
1024 cyl on the HDD. Thankfully, I ran across an option that lets you
bypass this limitation on new BIOSes. Instead of having the line "linear"
or whatever in your lilo.conf, I changed it to "lba32". Once I made this
modification and ran lilo again, it did not complain and my triple-boot
machine worked successfully. I plan on writing a webpage sometime this
weekend since many of us have had issues relating to NT & Linux
simulatneously.

PPPoE is still fairly immature. Sometimes one PPPoE implementation works
and another doesn't. If I'm not mistaken, RH 7 comes with the Roaring
Penguin PPPoE client, which is fairly popular; but there are others.
Check http://www.rodsbooks.com/network/network-dsl.html for a few links.
If you continue to have problems, please post some more details -- most
importantly, what DSL provider you're using. Also, be sure that your DSL
provider actually USES PPPoE. Not all do.

I have wu-ftp installed on a server running debian 2.2 The deb package
for wu-ftp had no ftpaccess file.
I have found several docs on the web showing how to set up user accounts
for Guest access, but
so far none has worked. wu-ftp is being started by inetd OK and I can
connect via ftp, BUT
I have access to whole machine. I have one doc that says ftpaccess is
used by wu-ftpd by
default and another that says I must either re-compile it or start it
with -a
What's the real scoop here ?

First, one does not install Linux "on" Windows, because that implies
that Linux is a Windows program. Linux is not that; it's an ALTERNATIVE
TO Windows. You can install Linux ALONGSIDE Windows, though.
Second, LOADLIN is a DOS program that uses DOS features to give control
of the computer to Linux from DOS. It does not work in Windows NT or
2000 (unless there's some NT/2000 version of LOADLIN of which I'm
unaware).
Third, to install Linux alongside Win2K, you must repartition your hard
disk, install Linux, and use some variety of boot loader (like Linux's
LILO, Win2K's OS Loader, or a third-party program like BootMagic or
System Commander) to select which OS you want to run. Without knowing
more about your configuration, it's impossible to say how close you are
to having done all this.
For more information, there are various FAQs and HOWTOs on
multi-booting the two OSs. Check http://www.linuxdoc.org for Linux
HOWTOs and http://www.ntfaq.com for Windows NT/2000 documentation.
There are also scads of sites that cover one aspect or another of
multi-OS configuration. My book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration
Handbook_ (http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/) gathers much of this
information in one place, although it's overkill for basic
configuration of two OSs.

Thanks for this resource it made me realize I had missed a step:
changing the X driver from "nv" to "nvidia."
Doing that changed the behavior (there's lots of flashing and funny
bitmaps on the screen for a split second just before X starts up), but
it still fails: X works fine until I run an OpenGL application, in
which case it immediately crashes with signal 11.
So now it's just crashing when I run OpenGL apps. Anyone have any
suggestions on what to do next?
Thanks.

Well, the symptoms changed a bit after I selected a resonable varitation of
a scinit.def file. Now the tape drive will not hold onto a tape. Insert
the tape, it loads, spins for a few seconds, then ejects.
"mt load" results in an I/O error.
Attempting a tar results in " Cannot write: No medium found"
So, I'm stumped. Anyone successfuly using a HP35480A that can give me some
pointers?
