Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 06:55:04 GMT
I didnt install the theme packages from the begining with the
Helix-Code installer. But now I do want to be able to switch
themes, but Im not able too.
THe thing is that I cant find any of the themes that I
downloaded (or installed)
I followed the instructions on www.themes.org for sawfish, but
it didnt solve my problem. (ie copy the tar.gz file into
/usr/share/sawfish/themes; I even tried unpacking it into the dir).
Then I downloaded the gnome-themes rpm and installed it, and it said
that it contained several themes, but still no themes but the
Default shows up :/
Could someone help me out with this ??

Hi Peter,
Have a look at the file /etc/rc.d/rc ... it is executed when your
runlevel changes. So, it first finds if there is an rc directory
corresponding to that runlevel, then runs the KILL scripts. Now, before
killing, it tests "if the subsystem is already up", and for that it
looks for the existance of the files /var/lock/subsys/$subsys or
/var/lock/subsys/$subsys.init in that order, and if one exists, then
only it runs your kill script. So the idea that is in your start script
you crate (or touch) a /var/lock/subsys/xxxx file (assuming your
filenames Snnxxxx & Knnxxxx), and remove that in your stop script.
Hope this helps,
Kousik

I have an AOpen AK72 mobo (KX133 chipset) it has a AD1881 CODEC chip.
Got sound by enabling the legacy audio (SBPro compatible) in the bios,
no MIDI though.

I have a YAMAHA OPL3-SAX sound card in one of my systems and it works
without any problems. In redhat 6.2 I just did an "init 3" which takes
you to a text console then login as root and do "setup" and choose
system configuration/sound configuration. It should find the card and
play how Linus pronounces Linux. then a midi file. Then exit and you can
use "init 5" to get back into X. If you are using Gnome you still have
to turn sound on it the "Gnome configuration tool" also in the
"Desktop/window manager/Run config tool/Sound" section of the "Gnome
config tool" there is a place to turn on sound.
I don't use KDE but hope this helps.

Hi,
I want create my own harddrive backup/restore to cd-r using linux goodies,
and think it may be possible to use a Slackware linux boot/root install
diskette set - they cotain most of the basic software.
However, the kernel on the boot disk would have to be configured with SCSI
emulation and ide/atapi cdrom support (and version 2.0.35 or later).
The utilities cdrecorder and mkisofs would need to be on the root diskette
They could be easil;y added, with the few other required config changes.
The problem is that I have 2.0.30, and don't want to upgrade yet. Therefore
I would hope to find a boot/root set on the ftp site.
Does anyone know whether such a version of the Slackware Install disks
exists?

Subject: Is IPChains Script secure?
Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 20:15:26 +1000
Hi,
I've got this masquerade script that looks as follows. Can anyone comment if
this is secure for accessing the internet?
Also, can anyone please tell me the difference between a 'batch' file and a
'script' in Linux. Ta...
The script:
==========================================
ipchains -P forward DENY //This denies all.
ipchains -A forward -j DENY -p tcp -s 0.0.0.0/0 137:139 //This denies for
windows netbeui
ipchains -A forward -j DENY -p udp -s 0.0.0.0/0 137:139 // As above
ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -s 192.168.0.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0
insmod ip_masq_ftp
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
==========================================
The above allows me to link a few different machines to the internet via my
linux box. (Aparently I need the extra Denies in their so the linux box
doesn't dial out automatically when I go to search in network neighbourhood
in a Win32 machine.
I'm a little worried that the above script seems a little simple, and that
someone on the outside may be able to hack into my network while I am online
via the internet. Does this script look secure enough?

Subject: Suse 6.4: always stalled modem downloads
Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 23:36:28 CET
Hello!
I have a modem connection problem with SUSE 6.4 and I hope, one of you
can help me, as in a german linux newsgroup nobody found a solution to
this:
I always get stalled downloads with larger files under linux. The
downloads hang after some seconds and nothing more happens. If I start
to download other files at this time, the download starts - and again,
after some seconds it also stalls. In netscape I can awake this
downloads only with abort/resume if the server supports http resume.
Its always the same and it doesn't matter if I want to get a file from
my local isp (university) or from a distant server: for some seconds
the modem receives with full speed and then the download dies. Small
files are always loaded (f.e. html pages and small picture, etc.), but
if a larger file appears, the connection hangs.
I tried to change various options in /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial and in the
yast modem configuration, but nothing works. To be precise:
1. changed the initial at commands to 'AT&D2 M0' (my modem doesn't
need more commands to init - at least in windows and on my old
amiga)
1a. Disabled the data compression with 'AT%C0'
2. reduced MRU/MTU to 567 and similar values
3. explicitly enabled RTS/CTS handshaking with 'crtscts', even this
should be a defalut option (a trial and error test with cdtrcts
also didn't work)
4. set ACCM mask to 'a0000' (a default configuration for TCP/IP stacks
on my amiga)
5. set serial speed to 57600 and 115200 from within yast
6. tried the same with 'setserial', but this also didn't work
Now, I have no more ideas and I hope, one of you knows the ultimate
solution.
My configuration: Medion-PC (NPI-667-Avantgarde) and Suse 6.4. I
tested with an Elsa Microlink 33.6 TQV modem and a noname rockwell
modem.
Needless to say that the modems work properly under windows and also
when connected to the amiga.
