I am trying to install slackware. When I use rawrite to create the boot
and root disk, I get error message "Attempt to DMA across 64k
boundary", then rawrite quit.

I ran the command on several machines, on different floppy disks. All
those machines run NT. Did anyone meet this kind problem before? Thanks.

Thanks, how do I change the default? Or how do I choose one over the
other. Would I have to change the default everytime I would rather use
KDE over GNOME? Thanks,
Taylor

I actually never get the LILO prompt. I thought I installed it during the
installation process. How would I go about installing LILO. Right now,
my computer just boots to a choice of Windows 2K or Windows ME. I want to
keep that choice, but how do I install LILO and not override those
choices.

Also, I honestly am really really new to linux. I don't know what you
mean by runlevel 3 or 5.

CRAP!!! My login and password are telling me login incorrect. I'm sure
I'm typing it in correctly. Do I need to reformat and reinstall?

Nevermind, I figured out what I was typing incorrectly. So anyway, I'm
just trying to get linux up and running for the first time. My question
was as simple as not being able to log into x. I just needed the command
startx. That was the answer to my question. Thanks, but now that I can
boot to GNOME. How do I change the screen size. Right now I have to use
the mouse cursor to move the screen left or right to see that section of
the desktop. And the icons are huge! In windows you right click on the
desktop, go to properties and change the resolution. How do I do that in
GNOME? I would like a normal screen that shows everything on the screen
at once, rather than having it scroll left or right to see the rest, like
I've seen on some laptops.

Also, how do I boot into KDE?

Thanks for your patience and help,
Taylor

Put:

KDE

in /etc/sysconfig/desktop. This should give you kdm - the login manager
for KDE, which will enable you to choose desktop environment.

Loren,

Thanks for the reply. I actually discovered the bug by downloading 4.75
right after installing RH6.2. When I noticed the bug I went back to 4.72
and found it happened with that version too. After that Icalled a friend
who also has RH6.2 and he experienced the same problem w/ 4.72. I changed
back to Slackware. Slack has served me well for the past four years or so
and Netscape w/ Slack has never given me a problem. I'm willing to spend
weeks on a a compile problem but a runtime issue is beyond my skill level :)

according to the byte article yes, processes will migrate to 'better' nodes
with the exception of shared memory processes (constrained by the memory
reference model). also, all io still needs to be performed on the original
box, but there's ways implemented to alleviate the problems that creates. i
recommend the byte article mentioned elsewhere in this thread, available via
www.byte.com

Just a suggestion, but have you tried a bootloader _besides_ LILO? I am
under the understanding that some of the other loaders, like grub, or gag &
XOSL (both require a DOS partition), you can get around any limitations of
LILO.

Otherwise, I'd suggest putting a real small (5-10 MB) partition at the
beginning of the hard drive, and mount it as /boot. Then things should work
nicely.

Check that this partition is not "mounted" in any other system.
The booting needs full freedom for temporarily mounting "read only",
checking
and only later freeing to "read-write" conditions.
Read your rh6 /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab and delete any mention of this
partition.
Persist and RTFM, I know that it works in my case, but I use Slackware and
administering this animal is second nature after some time.
Have fun

Hi Raj
I'm currently running a firewall on a 486DX, So I believe you shouldn't
have any problems.

As for Firewall, There are a couple of good ones that I have/am using
1. PMFirewall (this is a script generator that does a pretty good job)
2. LRP (the one that I'm currently using)
I personally find the LRP (Linux router project's) a lot better. This is
basically a router/firewall which is a linux distribution that fits on a
single floppy.
It lets you set up firewall rules, DHCP for inside & outside the
network. I currently connect three computers that I have to the outside
world using this on the 486DX that I mentioned thru ADSL from SWbell.

You should be able to get more information by going to
http://lrp.c0wz.com (note the '0' in c0wz).

Mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if ou have further questions.

Regards & have fun

Alex...
