I'd suggest putting most of the capacity into /usr and /home as they are
where most apps and user files are stored. /var stores logs and web and
ftp data by default in RH7. Here is an example :
/ 200MB
/var 500MB
/usr 2000MB
/home 2300MB
Vary this depending on what you plan to use the pc for.

I spent ages trying to get this card (onboard) to work using sndconfig
which did work whilst in session then disappeared once rebooted. I
eventually bought a SB128pci, massive improvement, should have done it a
while ago.

Subject: Re: RedHat can not see hde disk
see this Howto:
http://www.csie.ntu.edu.tw/~b6506063/hpt366/
it is specific to the hpt366, but it will work with any ide controller.
>From the Howto:
1.Boot with the installation floppy or CD-ROM supplied with your Linux
distribution. After you have passed the boot
process (there should be a menu or something coming up at this
point), press Alt-F2 to switch to a different virtual
console.
2.There should be a command prompt waiting there. Type in the
following instruction:
# cat /proc/pci
3.You should see lots of information appeared on the screen. Find
something that looks like the sample output shown at the
end of the previous section. You may use Shift-PgUp and Shift-PgDn
to scroll the display.
4.Compute the magic numbers as instructed in the previous section.
5.Reboot. This time when you see the boot prompt, type:
boot: linux ide2=0x????,0x???? ide3=0x????,0x????
What you see and the exact command to type varies from distribution
to distribution. Check your installation manual or
online help to make sure you are giving the right command.
6.This time the kernel should recognize the HPT366 channels and all
the disks attached to them. Install as usual.
7.At the end of installation you should be offered the option of
making Linux directly bootable from the disk or make boot
floppies. I recommend you should have bootable floppies lying
around in case something goes wrong, but whatever you
do, you should modify lilo.conf and add the following line to it:
append="ide2=... ide3=..."
Just like you typed in the boot command prompt. If you do not do it
now, you will have to type it manually each and
every time you boot, otherwise Linux will not load successfully.
Then run lilo.

type "sndconfig" to setup your soundcard. for the ethernet card, I
believe the D-link is uses the tulip driver or maybe the dec4x5.
Anyway, go to run linuxconf from the system menu as root and go to the
networking section. there you can specify an adaptor and what driver
you want it to use. reboot and presto...

Nope
I am installing , not upgrading.
I think that there is a bug in 7.0 which means my ehternet card is not
detected and therefor the prompts for network configuration do not kick in.
Any help people? Please?

If it is a Winmodem (if it is PCI it probably is) you are out of luck.
Depending on the chipset you may be able to get a binary only driver for
linux. Do a search for win modems and linux to find drivers.

You can just download the lastest drivers snd2217.tgz and pnp2217.tgz from
http://linnix.com.
You can manually install it with:
1a pnpdump & isapnp ...
1b insmod wss io=XXX irq=XXX ...
1c insmod cmi0001 (PNP ID for 8330)
or
2 setpnp

Stick to redhat 6.2 The 7.0 is real bad, lots of bugs and the glib they
used is non-standard and is going to be only supported by redhat. I tried

I am just a newbie too, but I think you just need to install the S3
server file with the appropriate rpm.
Then just link X to it, or run one of the setup utilities, once the
server has been installed.
However, when I playing with the SVGA and S3 servers for my S3 card, I
found there was also an X link in /etc/X11 (which was the active one) -
I think XF86Setup, Xconfigurator and xf86config must set things up
differently?

I don't see why you need to remove it, surely it can't do anything
unless it's linked.

Subject: Multihead and efm/gnome/file management
I'm using Xfree 4.0.1 with Xinerama and multihead and enlightenment
(0.16.5) as a window manager.
Everything works fine with Xinerama, but I would perfer to run in
multihead mode (i.e. NOT Xinerama) however, there are issues with the
second head. I would like to run gnome, but it does not seems to run
too well in multihead mode (works fine in xinerama).
(Xinerama has other issues: no 3d, videos will not play on the second
head)
The only WM i can get to work in multihead is E. Which works ok, but
always complains when I start it on the second head that there is
already a WM running on it (other WM's do this too, but then fail at
that point), it does however start after that. I can start gmc on both
heads separately, but it starts to do strange things and I can't have a
separate setup on each monitor, they have to be identical.
So, my question is, is efm multihead capable? Would it allow me to have
separate setups on each head? Is there any good file management setup
that supports multihead?
I tried efm in the 0.0.0 days, but haven't tried since. Is it dependent
on E0.17, or can I use it with E 0.16?
Thanks,
Alex

Can't figure out what the drive designation(s) for the new aux controller

Is there a configuration file I need to change to tell the OS where to boot

Any ideas?
