Rob, are you playing the actual Linux version of Quake 2 or the
windows version with a Linux executable? It may be that you
need to change the permissions/ownerships of some of the
Quake datafiles.
www.linuxquake.com is the place to go with Linux quake
problems. They have a few FAQ's which should help you out

Date: Fri, 20 Oct 2000 16:05:27 GMT
Okay, I got the kernel 2.2.17 and the backport to 2.4 for usb and
successfully compiled them all. Then, I booted up with my usb zip
drive in the usb slot and saw the following on bootup
checking for usb
mounting usb filesystem
which I never saw before, I mean the mounting. Now, where in the
world is the mount to the zip drive. I don't see it in the /mnt
directory. Is there something else I must do?
I have the Microtech USB zip drive. Do I need to do something with
scsi here?
thanks!

Well here we go then this is what came up from fdisk -l /dev/hdb1 (which is
my boot partition), the last line metioning a valid partition table came back
at the prompt and not within the output file.
Disk /dev/hdb1: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 19885 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 1008 * 512 bytes
Disk /dev/hdb1 doesn't contain a valid partition table
And this is my /etc/lilo.conf file:
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
linear
default=win
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-6.1.1
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hdb8
other=/dev/hda1
label=win
I might add here that I can no longer boot into anything unless I use my
RedHat boot floppy !!
I've decided to scrap my Windows 2000 disk and re-format it, I'm going to
install 2000 once I've
figured this problem out.
Best of luck and many thanks

You should read CD-writing HOWTO - especially section 2.1 where it
details *exactly* how to make ide-cd ignore your CDRW, yet it can
still drive your CDR, DVD, or whatever. The easiest way is via some
insertions in your module configuration file (/etc/modules.conf or
whatever) - does not require a kernel recompile.

Right now it seem to only support 2 GB.

Make sure that both 'shell' and 'login' are uncommented in
/etc/inetd.conf. Seems to me I could could rlogin and rsh with the
'login' uncommented, but could not rcp until I uncommented the 'shell'.
Also make sure that .rhosts is 600 permission. The default umask for RH
gives files 664 permission by default, which will not work.

I have RH6.2, and I just upgraded to kernel 2.2.17 (by compiling
from source).
With the original kernel (2.2.14-5.0), when I told the computer to
shutdown -halt, at the end of everything it would turn its power
off. After the upgrade, it said it was powering down but it
didn't -- it just hung.
So I went back into the configuration and turned on Advanced Power
Management (whixh the help said was pretty pointless unless you
were using a laptop, which I'm not), and turned on the
Real-Mode BIOS calls for power-down, which it said fixed
some bugs.
Now, when I tell it to halt, it reboots instead.
How to get it to power down for real?

When you boot press the tab key at the LILO prompt and see if it gives you
any alternatives (Windows might be called 'dos').
What partitions and types are shown in Linux fdisk? If there are no FAT
or FAT32 partitions then maybe you selected the wrong option during
install. Normally it will set up the system so LILO can boot to the other
OS and will automatically mount the Win partitions in /mnt. Check
/etc/lilo.conf and /etc/fstab (or the /mnt dir).

Not quite sure what you mean by normal, normal for DOS (translated) or
actual linear geometry?

You should have no problem at all adding 2 primary partitions. But to add
logical partitions, you could try copy and paste (print) current fdisk
partition listing, remove all logical and extended partitions, make larger
extended partion and then recreate existing logical partitions exactly as
they are now.
>I've tried to create a new primary partition with fdisk but I don't know

What, 'mke2fs /dev/hda3' did not work (or whichever drive it is)?
>Maybe I could enlarge the extended partition ?
>Is there a way without deletind all the logical partitions ?
Deleting partitions does not destroy the data on them as long as you
recreate them again with exactly the same geometry. But it would make
sense to backup anything essential, just in case. I do not see any reason
why the extended partition cannot be made larger, but it might require
deleting and recreating the existing logical partitions like I mentioned
above.

If you need to do any scripting with your Local IP, you can do that from
/etc/ip-up (or ip-up.local in RedHat). See 'man pppd'

Okay. Here's the scenario: Dell OptiPlex GX1 PIII-500 circa about June
1999. Came w/ one Maxtor 10G IDE hd. I presume it is UDMA/33 capable,
not sure about 66. Using hdparm (doesn't matter what distro, as SuSE,
RedHat, Mandrake, Storm, Debian, etc. all return similar results on
these hard drives), this drive (/dev/hda) will jump from about 3-5MB/sec
to 19-20MB/sec by enabling 32-bit I/O, and DMA. Fiddling w/ any other
options just makes the speed go down (relative to 20MB/sec, not
5MB/sec).
The second hard drive (/dev/hdb) is a 17.2G Maxtor, circa December
1997. Not sure what the rating is on it, but I _think_ it was ATA33.
This one is the problem child, per se. Straight out of the box, w/ any
distro I've fiddled w/, this drives transfer rate is btwn 1-2MB/sec.
Again, the only options that seem to make a significant positive
difference is the 32-bit I/O, and DMA. But even so, the speed only goes
up to a blazing 3MB/sec, tops. I've gone thru the hdparm man page,
tried a bunch of different options, and I've never gotten any better
than that, which is kind of depressing.
Any ideas?

G'day,
I'm trying to set up a small office server, using Red Hat 6.2. We did have
ppp running, but it broke whilst trying to get fetchmail to work properly;
I'm not sure if it wasn't due to a segmentation fault/core dump courtesy of
linuxconf.
What happens now is that when started (using ifup ppp0) it goes into a loop:
you hear the hard disk thrashing a bit, you see several modem lights flicker
a bit, you hear the hard disk thrashing a bit, you see ...
I've uninstalled ppp and the associated wvdial and reinstalled, I've tried
to edit the script and configuration files I know about, but it's still the
same.
Does anyone have any clues?

I'm thinking about getting an HP, IBM or Compaq desktop to put linux on,
because these boxes tend to be quieter (for a music server in the living
room.) Does anyone have any experience putting linux onto these? Any
issues with their (typically) strange propietary bioses or onboard video, etc.?
Anyone with real concrete experience?
Thanks.

P.S. I have a RH distro now, but wouldn't have a problem building a kernel

Go to the xircom website and get the linux source code for your ethernet card

I would recommend cutting and pasting the compilation instruction from the
read.me file to a terminal window
because it is long and prone to typos.

Subject: xdm sometimes locks up
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Victor S. Miller)

I've installed RH 7.0 on my Dell M166s with 64MB memory. I enabled
the option that runs xdm to log in. Usually everything works without
problem, but every once in a while, after I log out (I haven't really
done anything out the ordinary that I can see), after the xdm screen
is written, the system appears to freeze: only part of the X for the
mouse cursor is written, and no mouse or keyboard actions yield a
repsonse.
Are there any ideas about how to diagnose this problem?
