What Felix is talking about, however, is having more than four primary
partitions worth of data on the drive, and changing the partition table to
see each one when needed.
While it's certainly useful to get around specific problems, as a general
solution, it's full of potential problems. The very nature of the
workaround presents a data area as unpartitioned space to whatever is
booted.

I can't give you much real help, but I can offer
some encouragement. I got my Archive Python DAT
drive to work without a problem. I can suggest
that you look at the manual for the drive to
figure out if there might be a hardware problem --
or even try the drive under Windows, which might
allow you to set up your drive easier, initially
(try a W98 or W2K backup program, for example).
You can read the manual page for mt (and st) and
I think there may be a well-known HOWTO for
tapes. I'm not sure if it will help, but you can
look in the linux source code tree, too. But I
just ran something like 'mt status' and figured
out that /dev/tape was not set up, so I linked it
to /dev/nst0 and away it went. I can do multi-
volume tars; everything seems to work.
See below where I have copied your questions.
I don't visit this newsgroup often. If you want
to ask me a question (not sure that I can offer
much more help), email me at

I'm not sure what might cause this. Could it be
a hardware problem: SCSI cable problem, dirty or
busted drive? Bad tape? I think maybe remember
something like this happening to me when I had a
SCSI configuration problem. If your cable, SCSI
addresses, termination, SCSI adaptor and drive
are all right, you should have no problem, I
think (assuming your drive has no major quirk --
and I doubt that).

The SCSI commands that go out over the SCSI bus
are standardised. I believe the "Not Ready"
indicates some particular reply was not returned
from the drive. I'm not sure if this is normal
or not. If you're still having trouble, I'll
check this next time I boot my Linux system and
see what I get. I'm pretty sure it is not "Not
Ready".

There's basically nothing to it if you have the
scsi tape module (st), which dmesg is indicating
you do.

As some will notice I am new to the world of Linux.
Have installed Windows 2000 on C:\ in NTFS (which I think NTFS is probably
the cause of my problem).
I now want to install Mandrake 7.1, install runs & partitions setup but I
cannot get W2k to boot after.
Having repaired W2k with FIXMBR obviously Mandrake will not boot.
Q: Can someone tell me if or how a dual boot is achieved in this way without
C:\ in FAT and without re-installing W2k.
Although at the end of the day I want a version of Linux installed.

After installing Redhat Linux 7 on my multi-boot system (Win2k, Windows 98,

uses under Redat 7. I'd like to keep it and boot everything from there, but

Subject: Problems setting up HP Scanjet 4P
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 21:45:53 -0500
Greetings everyone,
I am having trouble getting an HP ScanJet 4p to work with Redhat 6.1. I
am not new to Linux and have configured many devices and systems but
this one is being very stubborn. The scanner is connected to a an SCSI
card and under Windows, it resides at 0x240 IRQ 10. The card is also
plug and play, which by itself should not be a problem, as I just
comment out the necessary lines in the isapnp.conf file and no problems
are reported on startup of isapnp. I then insmod the sym53c416.o
modules using: insmod sym53c416.o sym53c416=0x240,10
No errors are reported, but the device is then not found using the
various SANE tools. I check the HP SANE FAQ and find that if I don't
get the last three lines in my var/log/messages file, something has gone
wrong. Only they don't tell me what that something could be:
(snipped from the FAQ...)
insmod sym53c416
If it worked, have a look at the file /var/log/messages. If the scanner
was
switched on, messages like these should appear:
Aug 6 17:16:13 algol kernel: sym53c416.c: Version 1.0.0
Aug 6 17:16:13 algol kernel: scsi0 : Symbios Logic 53c416 (rev. 151) at

Processor ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Aug 6 17:16:14 algol kernel: Detected scsi generic sga at scsi0,
channel 0, id 3, lun 0
If you dont see a message about Vendor/Model/Type, something went wrong
and you dont need to try the find-scanner tool of SANE. It will not
show the scanner.
(End of Snip)
The entry in my isapnp.conf file is below:
# Card 1: (serial identifier 62 ff ff ff ff 61 41 89 4d)

Has anyone experienced trouble with this card and found a workaround?
It seemed very straightforward to set up and reports no problems. It
seems to not be able to completely load the module. Other information
which may be relevant is that I have a non PNP sound blaster card on
0x220 IRQ 5, a PNP modem on IRQ 3, com2 and a 3Com Etherlink III card
which I am leaving disabled for now in my isapnp.conf file.
Any tips would be appreciated. This computer belongs to my sister who
is wanting to make the switch to Linux for her graphic design work. She
has seen the GIMP and Star Office and is completely committed to getting
rid of Windows if I can just get the damn scanner working.
Thanks in advance!

If you can't or don't want to use kerneld, then make the relevant binaries
setuid root. It's not perfect as everybody can call them now. One solution
here would be something like setting the permissions such ...
---s--x--- 6 root sys [/sbin/modprobe]
.. that only users who are in a certain group too can run them.
The usual security considerations are to be applied.

You don't mount tape devices. Just write or read directly from

But why would you want to? In my experience, only Microsoft
operating systems limit you to booting from a primary partition.
With the "four primary partitions per physical device"
limitations, this would allow you to install and boot three
different Microsoft operating systems from primary partitions and
use the fourth primary as an extended partition containing
multiple logical partitions from which to boot your non-Microsoft
operating systems.

1) Install Mandrake 7.1 and make a bootfloppy and install LILO in your
/-partition not in MBR of /dev/hda. When you work with LILO in Mandrake
installation click on all unneccessry choices as DOS and remove them,
you only need Linux in LILO.
2) Reboot with your Mandrake bootdisk. Read the HOWTO on NT4 and Linux
or short make a copy of your LILO #dd if=/dev/hda5 of=ma71hda5.lnx

Copy the file ma71hda5.lnx to a floppy and shutdown Mandrake.
Start W2000 and copy ma71hda5.lnx to c:\
Remove the rhs protection on c:\boot.ini, open boot.ini with an editor

This way will work but it installs all the files where they can be
destroyed by the user if he chooses and if more than one user wants to
run it then it takes up twice the space on the hard drive.
> You are not supposed to install it as root, which would put it

What??
To install it for the network you have to install it as root and tell it
where you want it installed to. Such as /usr/lib and you would use the
"/net" switch to do a network install so that other users could use it
also without having to use twice the hard drive space.
I install it as root and place it in /usr/lib then create a symlink from
"/usr/lib/office52/soffice" to "/usr/bin/soffice" so that users can use
it also. This way all the files are not available to the user and if
more than one user wants to run it then they only need to run the user
part of it instead of using twice the hard drive space.

Hi,
I am attempting to install qmail 1.03 on a machine running Red Hat Linux
6.2. Prior to this, I used sendmail exclusively. The main problem I am
having is with local mail delivery. Outgoing messages seem fine, but
incoming messages only show a few lines of header information - no body
of the message or extended header information, for example:
>From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Oct 20 10:48:02 2000

My sendmail.cf file contains:

and my current /var/qmail/rc file contains:
exec env - PATH="/var/qmail/bin:$PATH" \

I'm guessing that the problem is that I don't quite call procmail right
from /var/qmail/rc, so I am wondering what other people are using for
local mail delivery on Red Hat Linux 6.2 boxes? If you are using
procmail, what arguments do you pass to it in /var/qmail/rc? Can
someone give me an example /var/qmail/rc file so that I can get all of
my header information and the body of the message? Thanks!

P.S. - I have attempted calling procmail with the -Y and -d flags, but

single user version was released for free. The single user version
did not install as "networked" into the /usr/... tree.
Is the new version 5.2 also free for the network version?
If so I see an upgrade in my very near future.

I had the exact same problem...
After removing all of the "Loadmodules" and "AddModules", and everything
dealing with PHP3 (!) out of the httpd.conf it worked like a dream...
I just editted httpd.conf, searched for everything that had "php3" in it,
and commented it out...
Kevin.

If it is compatable you would do this.
init 3 # this takes you to a text console.
login as root
/usr/sbin/setup
Choose Sound configuration
and follow the choices
When done you would use "init 5" to get back to X
I don't know if the card you have is compatable. If it isn't then this
may not work.
